I’m in the middle of knitting a blanket, and to save some money I’ve been buying the yarn in bulk online. I went in today and the sales woman very curtly told me they do not spool yarn that isn’t bought there. I even offered to pay to have my yarn spooled and she told me I could do it myself. Pretty obnoxious. Not the way I expect to be treated at a local, neighborhood boutique.

A friend recommend that I check out String Theory when I told her I had a business trip to Glen Ellyn. I’m glad I did. The staff was helpful and courteous. They suggested several appropriate yarns when I told them the project I had in mind. They had a nice selection of both yarn and accessories. There was some sort of class or knitting group meeting while I was browsing. They sounded like a nice bunch of women who enjoyed their time together. I didn’t try to join in their conversation, but I did have the impression that I would have been welcome. I’ll certainly return if future business takes me back to the area!

Drove 20 min out of my way to visit and was not disappointed. They carry Shibui yarn and even wound it for me. Definitely a great vibe, neither snobby or pretentious, just a honest to goodness yarn shop. I also had my toddler with me, which I’m very conscientious of, but they even had a little boat with interesting toys for kids to check out. Keeps them occupied just long enough for mom to decide on which color…

A must-visit for yarn crawlers visiting Downeast Maine. Friendly, helpful staff, and beautiful yarn, some(like seiku) that you don’t find in most LYSs.

I go here every once in a while because my parents live in Wheaton. The staff are always friendly and ask me what i’m working on. They have a good selection of yarn and have been an establishment in the downtown Glen Ellyn area forever.

I“m a new knitter and lifetime crocheter. The staff at String Theory helped me select a project that brought my knitting skills to the next level. They understood exactly what type of project I needed, and what kind of yarn I’d be able to work with without getting frustrated. They also suggested classes to help me keep advancing. I’m thrilled to have this resource in our neighborhood.

This is a friendly, socially conscious store I would highly recommend. They always find time to help when I run into a problem with a project. The yarn selection is scrumptious!

My favorite LYS. Super friendly and knowledgeable, no matter who’s behind the counter. Beautiful selection of natural, socially conscious fibers. It’s not cheap, but the prices are fair(and sometimes, there are sale items). And they stock a full range of sizes of Chiagoo Red Lace circular needles! :D Notions selection is also good. There’s not a huge selection, but the ribbons and buttons from local artisans are beautiful and will surely add that special touch to your next project.

I’ve only been to String Theory a couple of times, but after my most recent visit I plan to add them to my regular list of places to increase my yarn hoard. I arrived yesterday deeply frustrated. I had about 3 rows remaining on a project and had made a mistake I had no idea how to fix. One of their super helpful knitting wizards got me out of hot water and back on track. They don’t seem to offer as many classes as other shops, but there is a «make your own class» and«get help» options that are very reasonably priced. I looked a bit at their yarn, they don’t have a lot of the flashy novelty-type yarns, but do have a good selection including a section of organic yarns. Recommended.

I wandered into this store not to long after I moved to the area. I wanted to learn how to knit. And really I didn’t know a thing. The staff at String Theory were fantastic, they helped me pick out what I needed to get started and the shop offers classes to help out knitters at all levels from beginners like me, to people that want to expand their knitting knowledge. I have been to a couple of other knitting stores since I have started knitting, none of them have had the welcoming atmosphere that String Theory does, and personally I just love the yarns they have. Bottom line, great store, great staff, great products.

This is my new favorite yarn shop! I’ve encountered some snooty shops before, but the ladies here were so helpful and friendly. The selection is marvelous to boot. I could easily spend hours here! The prices were reasonable for the quality of fiber too.

A good place to spend a pay check on yarn and then have to actually make it into something tangible. A fab place with a even more fab yarn selection. Its a mini place that jams a whole lot in. They have some of the brightest natural yarns I can find. The colors are super vibrant and unique. They have an area where people can come on in and just knit or crochet together and get a little help from the owner if she has time Classes are available for beginners and experts. The best part is that when you take your yarn to pay the lady will ask if you want it wound into a ball, of course I always say yes even though it doesnt matter I just like to watch her do it. They have a nifty lil hand cranked machine thats winds it right up into a perfect ball. Luvs it!
