This place was top notch, every aspect and detail proved why it has the rating it has. The atmosphere, the service, the food, all executed to a tee. I have been to awesome places all over; Chicago, NYC, LA, Dallas etc… This place can stand toe to toe with many of those places. i have only lived in the GR area for almost 4 years and I am only just getting started exploring but this was a gem for sure. The lamb chop lollipops was the most outstanding lamb that has ever passed my lips… No lie!!! The cowboy steak had excellent marbling and was a perfect medium rare. The Wellington was outstanding too. The cocktails were so well mixed I could have cried, I hadn’t had a real Moscow Mule in too long. Go here for a special occasion and it will make it more special.

My husband and I go to Chop House every couple months or so. We always get the lamb chop lollipops, wedge salad, lobster bisque, beef wellington,(he changes up his meal, but usually the filet), and then we get desserts — I love their Crème brûlée, but the baked Alaska is also amazing. The food and service goes so far above and beyond any other dining venue in Grand Rapids — dare I say anywhere! Outstanding! There was one evening, of our many visits, that my meal was not cooked quite right and the service was average — we were stunned. So we spoke with the manager Harry just to inform him of the situation. Not only did Harry completely cure our moods, he was so sweet and sincere about it. He discounted our meal and gave us free desserts on top of it! We still talk about that night and how awesome Harry is and how Chop House is equally amazing and how lucky they are to have Harry as an employee. On our next visit we asked to talk to Harry, we just wanted to let him know that this visit at the Chop House was the experience that we came for and always love. And again, Harry was the nicest, best employee on the planet. Not a surprise! Any time we dine at Chop House in the future we will definitely be checking in with Harry just to say hello! Best food, best service, best everything! Thank you Chop House for continuing to be the best!!! We will definitely be back soon, as always!

Fancy and expensive but their food is good. The steak is tender and flavorful and they cook it perfectly to your liking. Their sides were also tasty. A nice place to take someone for a romantic evening for a celebration.

We went for dinner late on a Saturday night. I was visiting a friend in Grand Rapids, and this was a special meal together to wind up the weekend. The atmosphere and service were excellent but the steaks and overall experience led to some disappointment. Even towards the end of a busy weekend night, the table service was just outstanding. I hadn’t experienced such excellent service in a very long time, and it was refreshing. Everyone who stopped by the table was polite, professional, and well-trained. Small details were noticed and appreciated. This restaurant was more expensive than all but the most costly downtown Chicago steakhouses, so that’s my basis of comparison. To pay these prices in Grand Rapids, I would expect the food to have been memorably good. It was not. The flavor and texture of the meat was very good, just not so excellent as to justify the price. Side note: the french onion soup was delicious! Both of our steaks were undercooked. I am very forgiving after having worked my way through school as a server, and I realize that grilling steaks is more of an art than a science. I also know many people erroneously think meat should be cooked more than the actual temperature they request. Here, though, ours were simply undercooked. I was able to eat mine, but my friend’s was so rare that the meat wouldn’t even cut with his steak knife. I watched him destroy the filet side trying; he didn’t have a choice but to send it back(probably only the second time I’ve ever had to do that). We were impressed that a new steak was delivered by the manager, and our server was also both apologetic and accommodating. No issue there. However, we overheard staff talking loudly in the kitchen, and they were blaming my friend. It was embarrassing, and made my friend feel very badly about having sent it back — such that he just couldn’t enjoy it when it was re-served. Not the way you want to feel about a $ 200 dinner for two.

The only other reason you would ever have 6 people surrounding you with knives would be if you were getting mugged… Unless you come to dine at the chop house. The service here is unmatched anywhere in the State. When they serve your food they bring out enough wait staff to ensure every plate is dropped on the table at the Exact same time. The food itself is nothing short of spectacular. My absolute favorite dish is the beef Wellington, they put a goose liver pâté in between the beef and the pastry puff and lithe flavor it creates is epic. The steak is always cooked perfectly and is bursting with flavor. The sides are big and really compliment the meals. The added bonus has to be the cigar and desert bar in the basement level. It is a great place to continue your night out, and thy have choices for all price ranges.

First it started off tat the steakhouse across the street couldn’t get our group of 9 in for several hours. The chop house pushed a couple of tables together for us and got us in 30 minutes. The food was amazing and the service was even better. Crystal did a terrific job taking care of us. Go big and order the cowboy steak. Hands down phenomenal.

Not to be compared to other Chop Houses, I have been to several. This one by far is the best I have been to. Service is for sure a 5 Star. I love the synchronized plating at the table! Lobster bisque is a must. The have GF and DF option if you talk to the server and even can accommodate Vegan if asked. Steak is excellent but if not a steak person, Sea Bass is to die for!

I’m not that picky, but ordered steak med-rare, came rare, sent back, came back well done. Brought 2 sides back and never retuned them, but charged me full price for them. Manager changed bill, but did not do so quickly, and was a challenge to get any accommodation at all. Very little apologies, so disappointing. Usually a great place, after this I won’t return.

The true definition of a ‘classy joint”. Probably a top 5 restaurant in Grand Rapids if not by style then by price. Having been there several times now Chop House has very consistent service of a top wait kind. I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing their pork chop, veal, and lamb chop dishes on top of the usual steak. Ranking by my favorite: — Lamb chop, most flavorful and comes with a nice berry sauce. Though the plating needs work. I would have preferred if it was a double cut instead of the singe cut. — Cowboy steak, marbling was awesome and added to the nice flavor. Came bone in which I like personally. Rather large portion so come hungry if this is going to be your pick. — Pork Chop, If you are in the mood for the other white meat. Chef does a good job cooking to order as the meat is of a very high quality. — Veal, least favorite and didn’t have any real taste. A bit disappointing Must have sides include the Cheddar Potatoes Au Gratin!!! All in all a very good experience for which we come back often when I am in town.

Came here for our anniversary. We had the tuna appetizer which was excellent. For entrees we had the lamb chops and veal with the oscar sauce which were very tasty. Topping off the night with an Oreos and crème brûlée cheesecake which was the highlight of the night!

My husband and I dined at The Chop House during our stay in Grand Rapids. The restaurant was dimly lit and had a romantic ambiance. Our table was ready for our 7:30 reservations. I realized that I had neglected to request a booth when I made the reservation and none were available when we arrived. When we were seated at our table, I noticed that a booth right behind us would be opening soon. We asked if it was possible to be moved to the booth once it was cleared. The service staff happily whisked us into the booth as soon as the previous diners left. In doing so, we had to change servers but neither the outgoing nor the incoming server seemed to mind, and everyone was very friendly. Our server was great, attentive without being obtrusive, and made some spectacular recommendations. The appetizer scallops were phenomenal, but the crab cakes were average and had too much filler for my taste. Our server knew we were debating over the lobster bisque soup and he brought us a small ramekin of the soup at no charge. We shared the grilled romaine salad. I had the beef wellington and my husband had a steak. Beef Wellington is one of my favorite beef dishes and, although it was good, it was not exceptional by any means. The side of au gratin potatoes was average, maybe a tad dry. We both had cocktails and then shared a bottle of wine. Even with the wine price of $ 120, I was surprised that our tab was $ 389. We dine quite often at fine dining establishments and are normally not surprised when we receive our bill. This was more pricey than most. Although we both enjoyed our meals, nothing stood out as far superior than other steakhouse fine dining. Dollar for dollar, we both agreed it was not worth the bottom line and would probably not be going back.

The service was good, not great, as it was a bit slow. My friend and I had the lobster bisque, which was very good, followed by a «small side Caesar salad.» I had asked about the portion ahead of time because I don’t like to waste food. I ended up doing just that because it was a HUGE salad! We had very nice red wine by the glass. The mark-up on the wine was notable. The steaks, while of impeccable quality, left something to be desired in the way of spice or flavor. The raw oysters were the best and most fresh I’ve enjoyed since I lived on the coast. I suggest this simple & elegant restaurant if you’re trying to impress someone, but not if you’re a foodie seeking great food that makes you want to come back again. For 2 ladies we spent $ 360.00. I think a better experience could be had elsewhere for the same cost.

I am a pretty well-seasoned steakhouse attendee, so I base this review on others I’ve been to. mainly in the Chicago area. As far as environment, I loved the place. cozy, dark, and well decorated. Our waitress was lovely, very sweet and knowledgeable about the menu. Drinks were good and strong, but pricey at $ 11/piece(somewhat expected at downtown steakhouses). The lobster bisque was delicious! Don’t skip the soup! For entrees, we ordered the crab & lobster cakes and Beef Wellington. The crab and lobster cakes lacked lobster and were just ok. For $ 36 I’d expect them to be lighter and more fresh. The beef wellington’s puff pastry and sauce were great, but it was completely RARE, not done enough at all to enjoy. Their au gratin potatoes were very average. For dessert we ordered the cheesecake with crème brûlée on top, but they were out! So bummed, it was 90% of the reason I wanted to try their restaurant! Definitely not too excited to return.

I went back to Chop House for my birthday yesterday. We skipped the sides this time, as we weren’t impressed with them last time we were there. We all ordered the filet, and they were again, cooked perfectly. Still the best steak I’ve ever had! We also had the blueberry crème brûlée cheesecake, which was amazing. I really can’t imagine going anywhere else for a birthday dinner now, especially with the discount for two people.

I made reservations to visit The Chop House on my birthday. Like others have mentioned, The Chop House offers a wonderful incentive for birthday diners: 50% off the bill for two people. The more people dining, the smaller the discount. I was able to reserve a table using Unilocal and Open Table. We arrived on time and were enthusiastically greeted by a bright service team. After wishing me a happy birthday, we were whisked away to an intimate table for two. The tablet menus are a nice touch, especially for the fact you can click most items to see a photo and expanded description. It made choosing our meal very easy because we were super-informed of what we’d be getting. They have a very interactive drink section on their menu as well. I ordered the French martini and Jacob got The Vineyard. Both drinks were strong and delicious. Our server was Kevin, who took excellent care of us without being snooty or hovering too often. My husband ordered the featured spicy shrimp appetizer, which he absolutely loved. I went with an 11oz filet, medium rare. Jacob chose the venison, also medium rare. Kevin was wise to warn Jacob the venison will be cooked to medium rare temperature, but it’ll look rare. We ordered the mac and cheese side, as well as the au gratin potatoes. All our items were served to us at the requested temperatures. My steak was divine… every bite simply melted in my mouth. Jacob enjoyed his venison, especially since it’s a meat not commonly found in most restaurants. The mac and cheese side was a dud… we found the noodles to be way too saucy, and the sauce itself to be very sweet. The bread crumble on top was off-putting, as we both prefer baked-on cheese. We discussed it with Kevin and he was apologetic, asked why we didn’t enjoy the side, and took it away(and off our bill). The au gratin potatoes were really tasty, though. Jacob and I were surprised at the generous portions. Of course, the prices are high, but so often I’m used to tiny portions. We forced ourselves to stop eating so we could try dessert. We went with their specialty: crème brûlée cheesecake. The cheesecake flavor that day was vanilla bean caramel swirl with a layer of crème brûlée on top. Lactose intolerance be damned, I savored every bite of that pie. When it came time for the bill, I gave them my license to prove it was my birthday, and we got a hefty discount on the meal. With two entrees, one side, two drinks and cheesecake, our total was less than $ 100. The restaurant, service, food and drinks were all so incredible that I wouldn’t hesitate to come back to The Chop House without a birthday incentive.

I always enjoy fine dinning and Chop House is one of my regulars! I have been to the one in Ann Arbor several times, but the one in Grand Rapids is my first time visiting this weekend! Made my reservation via Unilocal for a 7:30pm dinner for 3! Easy and user friendly! We were running late though as we got overly excited for some fishing supplies at the Cabela in Granville. Of course we were feeling extremely awful as being on time is big thing for us, but anyhow, the host didn’t make us feel bad at all. He called us and made sure we were okay and kept our reservation until we got there at 8:20pm. How great! Got my coat checked in and we sat in a corner table towards the back. Perfect sitting and enough privacy! Our server is Kristen! She is awesome! Very patient with menu and wine list and always had great smile on her face. The only minor thing was that she talked a little bit fast and for a few times I didn’t quite catch what she said as it was kinda late and we were all a little bit tired from the day activities! But the service is still phenomenal!!! Loved it! We ordered seafood platter, pan-seard scallops, sword fish steak and Tuna as our appetizer and main entrees; grilled asparagus and sautéed spinach as our sides! Wonderful selection and all were well prepared and presented!!! Again, service was great! From water boys, to server to host, all well trained! Super satisfied with their food and services!!! Towards the end of our meal, we got some ice cream and black decaf, which is a little bit out of our regular routine, coz we have always ordered Crème brûlée, but the ice cream was great! Low sugar low fat, and great flavors!!! Love it!!! Overall, Chop House has never let us down before and we had another great experience with them! Would recommend to anyone loves fine dinning!!!

Another fantastic meal. Porterhouse steak, Shrimp cocktail, potatoe au gratin and spinich. Awesome service! The electronic menus are so cool! Next time I might go for the lamb. I am not a smoker but they have a cigar lounge in the basement.

This is my favorite steakhouse in Grand Rapids. Ate across the street earlier this week and this meal was much better. One of my favorite appetizers is the seafood platter. Features a whole Maine lobster, lump crab, jumbo shrimp and fresh oysters. Seafood is flown in every other weekday. I like this app so much that I have had it as my entrée in the past. The Diver scallops are also very tasty, recommend ordering this appetizer as a side dish instead with main course instead of an entrée accompaniment. For dinner, tried the 16 oz Wagyu beef(not listed on menu, subject to availability). Prepared medium rare towards medium, prepared perfectly. Was a little bit on the fatty side for me, but as expected with this type of beef. Served with a nice Cabernet Demi-glacé and ordered with Oscar on the side(asparagus with Bernaise and some lobster meat). Steak had a lot of flavor and was a nice treat for this part of town. Other steaks are wet aged at least 28 days(twice more than across the street). The accompaniments ordered were Parmesan grilled asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes. Asparagus was grilled nicely, but lacked the saucy flavor that I prefer. The potatoes are heavily infused with garlic, but not over powering. For dessert, had the crème brûlée cheesecake. This was my second time having it this week. I liked the Tahitian vanilla gelato with it. Insider tips: ask if there are any unlisted specials and come for a birthday — meal is discounted. Downstairs is a nice cigar and dessert bar if you come for a nightcap.

Like most of my traditional steakhouse reviews, this one is marked with low-resolution photos due to the dark atmosphere… but in this case the restaurant, The Chop House, is well worth reviewing! It’s located within the downtown area(very walkable) and definitely reminds me of some amazing steakhouses I’ve been to. First off, the menus are iPads, which is a trend I continue to see. But in this case, every menu item could be selected to display a photo, so you had a good idea of what you were ordering. I also realized this interactive menu gives the servers a bit more down time between getting your drinks and taking your order. Not a bad strategy! I also want to give credit to The Chop House for having meals served à la française… it just looks and feels sooooo fancy to have multiple servers place the dishes down on the table all in unison at once! Kudos! Fancy! I started the meal with a glass of champagne and the French Onion Soup, which was very tasty. I’m weird about French onion soup… I eat the cheese/bread, slurp the broth, and leave the onions!(Classy me.) But it was really good. I also snapped a picture of my coworker’s steak, because it came out with that amazing bone attached wowzers. For my meal, I chose the filet mignon and a half portion of the macaroni. Everything came out hot and perfectly cooked. All of the side dishes are family-sized, shareable portions, but you can always choose a half-size as well. It was ample! I can definitely see why people have recommended that I visit The Chop House at least once while I’m in Grand Rapids… it’s classic, classy, and a really great meal.
