Texas Star Dinner Theater

Such a fun time here. The characters led us to our tables and visited each table before dinner. Salads were already waiting for us. I had the tilapia for dinner, served piping hot and delish. The wine flowed. The show was fabulous. I laughed so hard I gave myself a headache. It was so much fun interviewing the characters to get clues, and figure out who dunnit. Very fun evening. We’ll do it again.

This was a very cool one time experience. I say that because the food is awful. The acting is wonderful. The employees are very energetic and playful. They remain in character throughout the experience.
The dinners presented we less than fabulous. I had the tilapia which was bland and not a very well-​prepared fish. The veggies were great and seasoned well. The rice was a little mushy. The chicken dish wasn’t bad. I think it was the better of the two. The desserts were tasty. My husband really enjoyed the carrot cake.

This is a fun small-​town «murder mystery» dinner theater experience. The food is pretty good, and the portions are large. The cast members mingle with customers during the course of the meal before the show begins.
The show itself is pretty hokey, but the actors do an excellent job working the room and getting people involved. There were a few audience members who decided to make asses of themselves, which detracted from everyone’s enjoyment.
If you’ve never been to a mystery dinner theater, the Texas Star is worth checking out.

This dinner theater experience made a great date night experience.
Appetizers: dinner started out with fresh salads that were the perfect size. You had a choice of ranch or Italian dressing. The yeast rolls were tasty and very fresh.
Main entrée: I had the chicken and hubby had chicken grief steak. It’s very easy to overlook chicken, but mine was delicious and cooked perfectly. Husband’s chicken fried steak was good too.
Dessert: I had chocolate mousse and husband had cheesecake. Our neighbor had carrot cake. Everyone ate all if their desserts. Some people might have licked the plates.
Atmosphere: this is a dinner theater: read mystery dinner theater. You will sit at a table with other couples. We enjoyed our table partners and had a great evening with tons if laughs.
Service: the waiters kept it coming. I never wanted for anything. I love great service like this! I highly recommend this for a date night, fun evening.

Corny but fun! This «theater» is located in a detached building next to the Chill bar in Grapevine. I’ve been to Chill a few times, and always wondered what that other building was for. Well, it’s the theater — and by theater I don’t mean stadium seating or what-​not; it’s set up like a bar and restaurant, with enough room between the tables for the «actors» to move around. The actors you get are different than the ones shown here — but they were are really good. It «starts» at 7, but you can easily be a ½ hour late and not miss a thing. When you get there, you’ll be seated at your assigned table, which has a «team name» — you’ll need that later. Dinner is served, usually you have to pre-​order what you want to eat at these kinds of things. The food was surprisingly AWESOME. I had the chicken fried steak, and it was just great — it was enormous and I could only eat half of it, but it was one of the better I’ve had here in Texas. After dinner, the show starts; some characters come out, tell their story, bad jokes that are still funny, they make poke fun at some of the people in the audience, but it’s all pretty good! So, they do their thing, then they leave — desert is served. I had the key lime pie thing and holy-​moly — the presentation on these deserts were better than most I’ve seen at schmancy restaurants. And they tasted awesome — I sampled a few from the other people I was with. After desert, the do more of the show, and then it’s up to your table to decide «who done it», so to speak. Your team is allowed to ask each character one questions, if you want. Teams that guess correctly have their ballots put into a hat and the one drawn wins tshirts for the table «I solved the mystery» or something.

If you have a small group — maybe 4 or more people — and you’re looking for something to do — go here. It was fun, the food was good, the chocolate martini was aweome and that girl who played the calamity-​jane-​type; I’m in love!

We had 12 people in our group. We had a good time, it was entertaining. The acting was descent & smooth. Overall pricey, I think. Food was good. I had the fish, which was surprisingly tasty. I was skeptical about fish bc most places would cook it bland. The side salad was so basic, just veggies & croutons, no cheese or eggs. The dinner rolls were really good, soft with a hint if sweetness, would’ve been better if they were warm. The chocolate cake was surprisingly TINY! you could easily eat it in just 3 moderate-​size bites! It was really rich, moist, & chocolatey, wish it was 2−3X the size, especially for the price! Coffee had no flavor & too diluted. I don’t recommend bringing kids under 13. The young kids there appeared so bored.

i would have given more stars but I just didnt think the price was right for the service. It was pretty expensive to get a meal plus a 90 minute show. However, i wanted to take my out of town guest to a Texan show with cowboys and all.
We got there about 20 minutes before showtime. The seats are assigned but the room is medium sized and you can see the show no matter where you are sitting. Just need to make some adjustments if the actors are moving around. We introduced ourselves to everyone, and then we got our meals.
The food was ok. A bit on the oily side, but hey we are in TX and they do love their butter. It was a meal I could have made at home though, so nothing spectacular about it.
The show was really good, they cracked jokes, some of them were politically related (again, we are in the red state), so it didn’t bother me. I think if you tell them ahead of time that you are there for a birthday or special event, they will include that person in the show a lot. Which was cool to watch them get all embarrassed, haha. I didn’t find the acting unbearable at all, I think they did a really good job, but either have more of a selection on cuisine or just drop the price a bit for the ticket.

We have mixed opinions on this place. My husband loved it and just would give it 5 stars. I personally thought it to be really great food, service, and atmosphere. … but I guess the actual play itself was good but not over the top. I actually solved the mystery and won a tshirt which was cool. My husband would go again but I probably would not. I think it’s fair to say for the price of $ 50.00 per person you better really like this type of setting.

First and foremost I would like to start out saying that everyone there seemed to be having a great time, laughing and really enjoying the show however I am 30 years old and the audience seemed to be 40 and up with some kids. It was obvious that this was also the crown it was geared toward with the jokes and the storyline. I had a good time but the price tag didn’t meet my standards. I paid $ 60 per ticket and sat at a table with my wife, sister in law and her husband. There were probably 20 – 25 total tables and each table got a guess at who the think did it. Us and 4 other tables got it right and they took the 5 right tables and pulled out one winner and gave that table shirts. I feel for $ 60 if I got the murderer right all the ones who did should have got a shirt. Also the meal, it didn’t taste bad and it didn’t taste good. It was very bland and whoever cooked it is obviously afraid to make something that makes your taste buds pop at all.
The 3 stars is really a perfect rating because everything was just ok, nothing stood out, except the price.

The food ok i have had better, the price is bit high but you are not paying for a great meal but for a great fun time and show, and YES you will get that!!!
The food allover had a LOT of butter in it. I had the talapia and I thought it was good, just buttery, the vegetables are good too. I don’t eat sweets so he got to eat my choclate stuff.
The show was really good, I would so go back.

Not all the winners get a t shirt. Come on… shelf out for that much money at least a shirt to all the teams that got it right!

This is the second Murder Mystery I’ve participated in with Texas Star Dinner Theater. In ’07, I attended the Mein Shaft show in their previous (much more opulent but certainly much more expensive) digs at the Gaylord Texan resort. They now make their home in a standalone building in the same lot as bar and eatery Chill (see my review of that place, it’s awesome).
Our food service was a package deal that my employer had arranged (it was a team building event), so we were basically served a set meal that we chose from a small menu. My choice was a grilled tilapia with seasonal vegetables, and it was pretty good, as was the cheesecake for dessert. A full bar is available, but we didn’t partake as our company was also chipping in on drinks afterward at Chill.
But hey, you don’t come to these things for the food. It’s all about the show, and in this area, they did a great job. The show is put on literally in the middle of the participants, with the actors milling about and interacting with the audience as the show progressed. Even better: since they were doing a special show just for us, they worked in some terms and names that had relevance to our company which made for some fantastic laughter and a great time.
The actors stayed on script for the most part, but there were a couple of times that fate intervened, causing some improvisation, but the results were even more hilarious.
All in all, these guys put on a great show and I’d strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to have a great time. My only quibbles are the more limited dining choices compared to their old home, and parking, which is at a premium. But don’t let those things discourage you, go do it!

I’ve only done one other mystery-​dinner thingie and that was in Houston a long time ago. So I really don’t have much to compare it to. But if I was to rate this based on this location along, I was impressed and enjoyed my time there. Had a company team-​building event here with my coworkers. The service wasn’t top notch. Neither was the acting. But it was enjoyable and entertaining, to say the least. C’mon, these are local actors … Wasn’t expecting Tom Cruise or Sandra Bullock. Would be a nice place to have a get together w a large group of fiends. Something different than the regular bar/​club scene :)
