I’ve eaten at various Sonic Drive Ins over the years, usually burgers, tots, and the occasional Chili Cheese Coney dog. We were walking at Four Seasons today because of the heat, and I noticed they had introduced several new hot dogs. I tried the Chicago Dog and The Wholly Guacamole Dog, and I’ll get to the others soon — the All American Dog and the New York Dog. Both these dogs are undersized, perhaps 20% smaller than a normal Southern Chili Dog you find around town — like the one the American Legion sells on Saturadays for most of the year. And these are not inexpensive dogs — the Chicago was $ 2.29, the Wholly Guacamole came in at $ 2.69. Both come on a soft, poppy seed bun that is nicely flavored. The Chicago has an all beef weiner, tomato pickle, relish, mustard, and some spicy sports peppers — the real toppings for an authentic Chicago Dog — the purists in the audience will scoff at it, but this is not a bad version. The sports peppers are hot, as they shoud be, but the relish is too sweet for my taste, and I’ll skip it next time — when I make them at home, I use a Dill Pickle Relish instead. Thw Wholly Guacamole comes with an all beef weiner, a little guacamole, tomato, pepper jack cheese, jalapenos, onions, and a cheese sauce. This is a nice, spicy dog — with the jalapenos providing the fire power. I like this, and will order it again when I’m in the mood — but it is pricey for what you get.
