After being in the neighborhood for 3 years I finally got the time to head around the corner for some lunch with some friends the atmosphere and bar staff are on par for a local dive bar. We ordered some beers and a couple steaks; 1 medium and 1 medium rare. Order seemed simple enough; or so I thought. What came out of the kitchen was far from what was ordered both steaks bordered medium-well to well done. My friend decided to suffer thru his steak which had a tinge of pink in the middle but I could not and sent the steak back to which the cook came out in an arrogant manner to question why the steak was sent back. At this point I decided another steak wouldn’t be in my best interest and ordered the Cajun shrimp appetizer instead which came out perfectly cooked and was delicious. When the bill came I wasn’t charged for the appetizer($ 8.95) but was charged full price for the steak($ 18.95). When I questioned the bartender she stated she was sorry but that’s the way it is. Needless to say this will be the first and last visit to this establishment!

I never even noticed this spot, but my friend suggested we play pool. I wasn’t expecting good food, but I ordered anyways. I started off with the chile, which was to die for. It was fantastic, the perfect amount of meat to beans ratio. After that I just had a craving for meat, so I ordered the ribeye. Seasoned nice, probably the most tender rib eye I have eaten. Definitely going back for the food

Super service from our favorite waitress, Heidi and an excellent meal made for a nice anniversary. General Poors maybe a tavern but their chief is awesome if you venture beyond the standard pub food. So skip the fried bar food which is just okay and try the specials and main menu items. We joined their frequent customer program a while ago and got a $ 10 coupon in the mail. Loved their beef barley soup and fresh salad. My husband had the lemon sole which he tells me is the best. I requested the chicken picata which the chef will do up for me even if it isn’t on the specials. We both had delicious asparagus and couldn’t have been happier. The prices are fair and the food delicious. This place is consistently good and off the beaten path. If you are not looking to pay for fine dining atmosphere but enjoy fine food you should try general poors. Tell the chef his chicken picata fan sent you

well, not as great as the first time, but still good. Different bartender who likes Latin music while the patrons obviously did not. Ordered from the lunch specials. Had a yummy buffalo shrimp salad that had way too much blue cheese crumpled over it. I scraped most of it off and enjoyed my very fresh salad with several large flavorful shrimp. They only gave a tiny amount of salad dressing for a $ 10 salad(wanted more dressing). Boyfriend ordered prime rib sandwich w/fries…it was good but the meat was a little mushy. My long island ice tea was not good at all(she must have used bitters or whatever makes margaritas sour)…different bartender. Not nearly as good as the first one. Boyfriend had a yummy mellow beer on tap(cant remember the name).

Went there on a Saturday night. You would figure a place like this would be packed, but nope. Walked in with a group of 10 people for dinner, and only 1 waiter(felt bad for him). Drinks came out quick and the bartender had everything dead on. Finally placed our dinner order a half hour later. Ordered the«Cajun Burger» which wasn’t very Cajun at all. It was pretty much a rare burger with left over peppers and onions from the person next to us who ordered a sausage peppers and onions sandwich next to us. The lady order something basic, boneless chicken wings. Waited over 1 hour 20 minutes for them while asking the waiter numerous times for them. When we asked for the check, the wings came out. I’m shocked she didnt break her teeth on the first bite, they were hard as a rock. The wait staff and bartenders were extremely nice and removed the horrible food from our check. I don’t blame them. I blame their owner for severely under-staffing a restaurant, especially for a Saturday. In my opinion, go there for a beer… that’s about it.

Good pub food next to the Bergen county courthouse. Lawyers frequent often for lunch and happy hour. The bar is a little divey — cheap drinks and low key make it a chill hang out. I have gone for happy hour to enjoy the beverages(tho happy hour prices all of the time) and lunchtime strictly for food. The grilled chicken Sammy salad hits the spot. The shrimp is good and inexpensive as well. Nothing fancy, but nothing compromised in quality or service.

Overall a good local bar with tasty food selection and cold beer. Chicken wings undersized maybe there Cornish hen wings in disguise. Would love it if they had live music on weekends.

General Poors Tavern is an interesting dive bar. It has a rather diverse crowd which changes based on the day and the time of day/night you arrive. For many friends of mine this is a staple watering hole. It is great for those nights when you want to head out and have an inexpensive drink(or many drinks) locally. Typically when I pop in it’s a Friday or Saturday night around nine or 10PM. They have a pool table near the back door with fairly regular players visiting the establishment. There are many regulars here that I can recognize by face each and every time I am there. Generally it is a pretty friendly crowd and not too rough. General Poors Tavern earns a solid four-stars from me In the dive bar category.

Was out on a nice sunday afternoon for a ride and my girlfriend suggested we try the place, I was never there so I said sure, love the old bars and this place dates way back. Ordered a beer and it was the coldest freshest beer that I have had In a long time, food was good and the people were cool also, wasn’t all that crowded but will be back again.

Great place for a drink, music and pool. Also has a dart board in the back. Drinks are well priced and foot is average. Bathrooms can be cleaner. All in all, good hang out spot.

This is a great local pub for solid bar food at a good price. They have a frequent diner program that’s free to join and well worth the while too. For every $ 50 spent you get a $ 10 credit towards the next meal not bad. I usually eat dinner here during the midweek when the dining room is quiet but the bar area is full. The dining room and bar area have a rich history i understand complete with beautiful wooden built-in shelves, pillars and antique mirrors. They have featured specials just about each night and some of them are really terrific. My wife typically enjoys the seafood specials while I recently enjoyed the barbecue rib special. It’s a half of rack of ribs cooked perfectly along with a side salad, coleslaw and french fries for $ 11.99, that’s tough to beat! They also make surprisingly good Italian fair, the chicken Parmesan meal for example was excellent. For lunch I will typically order the roast beef sandwich on garlic bread along with onion rings. It’s really tasty, very filling and costs only $ 8.99. With about a dozen TVs, it’s a great place to come and watch the games. Sometimes we’ll come to watch the football game on Sundays enjoy the $.25 wings specials. While the chicken wings are on the small side they are as delicious as any we’ve ever had. The waitstaff is friendly, efficient & able to accommodate any reasonable special requests you might have. I understand that they are now open early and serve breakfast. While I have not tried it yet, I have heard good things about it already.

So. We came here to watch a football playoff game. What I loved about it, was that it was not packed. There are no frills at this local bar. It’s a decent size and can fit a decent amount of people The back room has both tables and a pool table. The pool table made me drop the star count on the rating. It should either not be so close to the tables, or the people playing need to recognize that there are people sitting. I was almost smacked in the head one too many times. Another reason they lose stars is because the heating sucked in there. It WASFREEZING!!! Service was okay, you had to go over to the bartender/waitress and grab her attention for a drink or food order. She seemed very overwhelmed and forgot part of our order. Not a big deal, I can understand. Now, let’s get to what saves this place. The food. The wings were super small — but they were the best pigeon wings you will ever have in your entire life. Just make sure you order double what you would order anywhere else. The cheese fries were good, and the chilli was just amazing. Full of flavor! I also had jalapeño poppers which were alright… but I’m not a fan in general. A friend had a buffalo chicken sandwich and she said it was outstanding. I have to return to have it, since on this particular day, I only had the buffalo wings. I will def. return to this place for some low key drinks and good bar food.

Since my initial review of this place, we’ve more or less made it a regular stop on our roundtable of restaurants, hitting it at least once a month, if not more. Our latest trips was last Wednesday evening, arriving around 7:45. bar side had a good crowd but the restaurant side was fairly quite with only 2 other occupied tables. This night we started with the potato skins and a dozen steamers as our appys. The appetizers here are generally just OK. The potato skins are standard bar fair, edible but nothing to write home about. I was a bit hesitant about ordering the clams mostly because I was not wild about the one other seafood appy I had ordered previously, the crab cakes. But I’d been on a clam kick that week and and Jr. wanted a couple so I thought«what the hell.» These things were outstanding!!! I mean there were 12 or 13 nice sized little necks but the thing that made this dish was the broth they were served in. This stuff was absolute KILLER! Just having soaked in this stuff for a few minutes made these clams an absolute joy to consume. Even my wife, who can’t stand seafood, or anything that been in close proximity to seafood was soaking bread in it a wolfing it down! My wife, having been a bit disappointed with a Chicken Piccata she had ordered elsewhere earlier in the week saw it was on the specials menu here and decided to give theirs a try. She raved over it, Said it was«delicious.» And getting anything better than«nice» out of her is an accomplishment. My son ordered his standard sliced steak sandwich which he didn’t really comment on but which I guess was up to their usual standards as the thing disappeared in about 8.6 seconds. I ordered my usual Broiled Sole. I noticed that another reviewer mentioned that the seafood here can be hit or miss. I have to say this has not been my experience. I pretty much order the same entrée every time I’m here and have yet to have a bad one. In fact, I come here specifically for that dish. Whenever I’m in the mood for sole, General Poors is where I head. Yes, I have thought that it has been slightly better on occasion than a couple of other occasions(when the fish might have been the slightest bit overcooked) but it has never been bad, not even close. We will definitely continue to be regulars here and I continue to wholeheartedly recommend the place.

For a pub, this is a pretty great place. 3.5 stars. I’ve only been to the restaurant(i.e., I have no clue what the social/bar scene is like), and have always been completely happy with whatever I order. Today, I got the cheesesteak sandwich. I was expecting thin sliced steak, cooked well, as usual, until they asked how I wanted my steak cooked. It came to me a perfect medium rare and was flavorful and delicious. In the past, I’ve had their turkey or roast beef sandwiches/wraps, fries and other bar food type things, and have never been disappointed. Always good service. No delivery, no parking. It’s a bit expensive for a regular lunch joint if you work close to the courthouse, and prepare to run into lots of lawyers/judges.

Best dive bar ive come across in the area. 4 dollar pitchers of Coors and yuengling Saturday and bud light on Fridays. cant beat those prices. Food is good too. Clams were very fresh and delicious. only 50 cents each. Buffalo chicken sandwich had good kick to it. and the beef tacos were well. beef tacos nothing special. but delicous as well. Burgers looked good and are served on rolls instead of buns.

Poor’s has been in business for decades because they keep a decent lunch and happy hour crowd. I wouldn’t really recommend for late night because parking isn’t that convenient. The worn wood adds character because it has deteriorated through the years of operating on Main St. Most of the menu is fine. Seafood dishes can be hit and miss depending on when they receive their food shipment. I come here because it’s a midpoint as far as location is concerned and the drink prices are manageable. Put it on my tab…

I have to tread carefully with this review b/c I frequent this place due to its proximity from my work(across the street). The last thing I need is secret sauce in my burger/salad/beer(reference NL Van Wilder). Anyhow, it is a decent bar/restaurant with good food and beer selection. But the place could be so much better if they spent some $ and renovated it a little. The bathroom would be the first place to start. Poors does not have that charming Irish dive-bar feel, a la Harley’s. Nor is it as nice/upscale as Poitin Still. Poors falls somewhere in between and therefore, lacks an identity. But if you are in the area and need a solid place for beers/burgers/salad, Poors will do just fine.
