So after racking up a $ 30 fine at the torrance library, I decided to check up on some of the LA County libraries. This Hawthorne location is where I got my first library card back in the 80s. Haven’t been back since middle school, and when I went to fill out an application a couple of months back they said I had to pay a fee for a replacement card cause I’m still in the system. Thought that was more cute than annoying. This place hasn’t changed a bit, the only thing that seems different is that the typewritten card catalogs are replaced by computers.

I grew up at this library. After 18 years visiting here, its become an iconic place for me(and I’m sure many others) .at the same time it hasn’t changed very much(furniture, desks, lighting, shelves, etc.) but they manage to maintain it clean and organized.

The location is sort of hidden so you wouldn’t likely come across it unless you already knew where it is. The inside is one big long room with shelves along the back wall and desks in the middle. It feels very old and a bit stuffy. The librarians and staff are pretty nice and helpful, but I was waiting at that information desk for awhile waiting for some help. They’re probably understaffed with the budget cuts and aren’t open Sundays or Mondays — ouch. Overall nice place but not fantastic and a bit smaller than I would have liked.
