There are literally dozens of hula halau in the Bay Area, no matter where you live, guarantee there’s one not far from you… BUT! If you got the money for the gas and tuition, I recommend taking the drive out to Hayward twice a week to attend practices with Tamali’i. Dancers of all ages, from kindergarten to senior citizen(much love kupunas…) are welcome. Aunty Yolanda teaches everything — Tahitian is what we focus on most, but also Samoan, Hawaiian, kapa haka(Maori), etc. Whether you’re brand new with no dancing experience, or maybe you’ve been in a halau before, you will learn and develop as a dancer in this group. Just be prepared to work; Aunty is awesome & she doesn’t play — she will be on your @ss to make the effort to improve, so you have to be down to work hard at practices. So… if you’re not really up for that, not prepared to sweat, Tamali’i probably isn’t the place for you… The group itself is cool too; no drama, none of that type of crap that happens in halaus sometimes. Really nice people, love dancing and the culture. So check it out, see what you think…

I call it home. Kumu Yolanda Ku‘uipo Taufa‘asau-Vincent you are the best! If you want to learn how to dance the authentic dances of all of Polynesia, come to Tamali’i(pronounced: tah-ma-lee-ee). Dancing with them for 4 years was the best part of my highschool career! You’ll meet tons of friendly people, and feel like FAMILY. I miss you Tamali’i!
