***Heard they were closed. Sorry for the late review**** end up here after posted a coupon $ 10 for $ 20. I will probably give them higher scores than they deserve at the moment because we don’t have ANYTHING else like this on the west side of San Antonio. which is it’s own disappointment, but not for this forum. do not order the burrito, you will be disappointed. the pulled pork was very delicious. I ordered the slider trio. a little on the dry side. the hostess/cashier also brought me a trio of their sauces to dip so that made the sliders more palatable. coconut flan was delicious. key lime soup seemed a hit with my daughter. I will have to take her at her word since she didn’t share and it was gone pretty quickly. :) I’m sure we’ll be back.

I spoke with someone last night who is a personal friend of the owner, Mr. Kranzle and he told my husband and I that the restaurant will not re-open. It’s been closed for a couple of weeks and the website stated it was due to getting an alochol license? Anyway, spoke to this person and, well, it’s closed for sure. Oh well… so sad I didn’t get to try it :( ***I only put one star since i didn’t get to go***

So sad to see this place close. The food was great, but as mentioned in an earlier review, the location was pretty bad. At a different part of the town, may be even if they were at a more visible location in this mall, it could have done much better.

First off, we are just normal everyday people. Not food snots, but do like food better then fast food and national food chain restaurant. We saw the reviews on Unilocal, and talked to one of our friends and they loved this place!!! So tonight we tried it and OMG!!! Sooo good. I got the pulled chicken, jerk sauce. My wife got the pulled pork. Both so tender, and the potato wedges are to die for. NOTHING is fried! All baked!!! The jerk sauce is more about the spice. The BBQ sauce is sweet and tangy. The original is very herb based. The jerk is great with chicken. The BBQ with pork and beef. And the original with fish. They are cheap too! I had to take a double take at the bill. Plantains for a appetizer, 2 full entrees and two drinks for $ 20.00!!! I would have gladly paid more for the meal we received. They are a true gem! Owners super nice and caring! We will be back soon and will take family and friends here!!! They need to be talked about more! Great job!

We need more of these types of restaurants in this part of town. Wonderful new flavors, had a few firsts. We did ours TOGO. Our 8 year old had the kids slider with broccoli and he asked for more. My wife and I had the large sample platter, more than enough for both of us and I get to have leftovers for lunch tomorrow. I will be back soon.

Great place. No fried food, all natural. The meat is good, the veggie dishes are off the hook. Make the trip!!! And try the plantains with some of the jerk sauce!

Happy to see a different option in this area of town. Calypso Rotisserie has a good concept and a great place. Along with the healthy trend; the food is(mostly) Caribbean with a modern twist. The place is new, very well decorated and very clean. The only things I will change are(1) take off the TV from the wall. Not every restaurant needs a TV, only if you want to be a sport bar(2) hide the soda machine to a less visible place… it make the place looks like a fast foods(3) add alcoholic drinks… if you want to be perceive as a good dinner place in a disposable income area… the wine and a good beer are a most… I was looking to have a glass of wine along with my food on a Friday night. Well the food was great, but not the best rotisserie chicken as claim. I was expecting something more; anyone can make a good rotisserie chicken as long you have the equipment. Before visiting the restaurant I thought the meats were marinated and cooked with the great homemade sauces. The meats are prepared with different kind of species, cooked and once they are served you pour the sauces yourself. Don’t get me wrong the sauces are great, but I was expecting something more from the meat, especially the chicken. The pulled pork was really good. The potatoes wedges were not a hit. The plantains were awesome! Believe me… I am from the Caribbean! The ceviche as an appetizer was really good. I will definitely go back and try more items from the menu. The place needs more definition, is a takeout or a dinning in place. The waiters need to know more about Caribbean food, because the lack of knowledge can inhibit the power to sell their food to clients.

Refried Black Beans? Yes, please! Calypso Rotisserie is a fun, casual, easy place to like — with a tasty menu, bright décor and a very nice staff. One of the things that got us in the door is the fact that many of their offerings are gluten free — and a bonus, the staff seems to get it, understanding that substitutions happen in a GF world. The thing that keeps us coming back is the food is tasty — really, really tasty! I love the beef short ribs and the rotisserie chicken — both are juicy and flavorful(especially with the original sauce, which is tangy, garlicky and just plain yummy). I’ve also had the chicken wrap and the sliders — which were good — but those ribs are the stuff dreams are made of! Nice touch: the complimentary refried black beans — a tasty little treat to get your mouth ready for the main event(bonus points again to the servers, who put the chips on a separate dish for us, so my husband doesn’t have to worry about cross-contamination with his GF needs). I know some additional items are going to be featured on the menu soon — I’m looking forward to giving them a try. (Truth in reviewing here: my(now) husband used to work for Pierre Kranzle when both were at Azuca a few years ago, but Paul and I have no connection to Calypso other than as customers).

Really enjoyed my first visit. The owner, Pierre, greeted and sat me. Very nice and seemed genuinely concerned about his investment. Nice casual environment with large screen TV mounted high on wall. Wait staff was nice and attentive. The food was fresh and had good flavor. The pricing was reasonable as long as you avoided a bunch of substitutions. It’s nice to have an alternative like this available. I will definitely be back to try other dishes!

Yum! Great casual restaurant. Orders are placed at the counter and then served at your table. My husband and I split the Sampler Platter for one. The Platter comes with a generous portions of pulled port, pulled chicken, island pork and one piece of rotisserie chicken, two sides of your choice and three sauces. It was a great introduction to the menu. For our sides we ordered the mango-jicama salad and Pineapple-Coconut Rice. The salad is a tasty slaw with jicama, cucumbers, cilantro and a tiny bit of mango. The rice was fruity and sweet. The pulled chicken without sauce is bland, but juicy and I think the expectation is to add sauce to season it the way you like. All three sauces were good. The Honey-Pineapple BBQ sauce is supposed to be tangy and the Jerk sauce spicy, but we thought the BBQ sauce was spicier(hotter) than the Jerk sauce. The rotisserie chicken thigh was cooked perfectly. We were also served a complimentary portion of very tasty refried black beans. My kids had the Chicken Wrap, which was good when a sauce was added to it, and the Pulled Chicken plate with the original sauce. Next time we’ll order the sauce on the side, as the chicken was pretty much drowning in sauce. Service was great, especially for a quasi-fast food place. Total bill was about $ 30 for the four of us. We will definitely return. Oh, they now have a big screen TV and a football game was on with the sound turned off.

This place has become my go-to restaurant in Helotes. The staff is incredibly friendly & helpful(esp when I have my toddler with me). takeout is quick & we love the chicken. I especially love that all the meat is antibiotic free. My advice is to get the sauce on the side — it makes it less messy to eat(and the chicken is good even without the sauce).

I went to Calypso after a friend referred me and had a very happy experience. I wasn’t sure what to expect… whether I’d be eating«fast-food» or «authentic» Caribbean food. It seemed like a mixture of both. The quality was excellent and I love that they use top quality beef, chicken and fish. I ordered the short-ribs with original seasoning. It was so tasty… a little heavier than I was expecting, but hey, it’s beef. Beef is heavy right? My husband ordered the pork with jerk seasoning and he loved it. The Caribbean black beans were delicious. I wasn’t a fan of the plantains, but I generally don’t care for plantains. It is definitely worth a try. I hope you have the pleasure of meeting Pierre(the owner) as well. A genuinely nice guy. We are planning to go back to try the rotisserie chicken since that’s their specialty!

Calypso is a breath of fresh air for this area. It is so nice to have something else to choose from other than Luby’s(yuck!), tex-mex, or the other usual chain restaurants. I had the torta with pork(which was basically a pulled pork sandwich on a roll). The pork was well cooked and the sauce was pretty amazing, not your typical BBQ sauce. Keep in mind that when served with the potato wedges(which by the way are also well seasoned and perfectly cooked) this is not a very health conscious dish, but it seems like many of their other options are very healthy including the chicken with the veggie and salad sides. My daughter had the kids chicken wing meal, with potato wedges and ranch dipping sauce on the side. The wings were a little more bland than what she was expecting, so I ordered a small side of BBQ sauce for dipping and she was happy. Overall the food was fresh and delicious, and the staff very friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back to try some more of their selections! Thank you Calypso for finally bringing us some variety!

New location right on the outskirts of San Antonio on Bandera Road. I wasn’t too sure what to think when I saw it being built, but after reading the profile on it while under construction — it peaked my interest. We stopped in to give it a try one night and left very pleased. One has to have the taste or the open-mindedness for this particular flavor of the Caribbean. I had the island pork dish with rice and potato wedges. I loved every bite and have no complaints. The staff was friendly and the place was nice and clean. On the dish I ordered, the pork was seasoned and spiced then cooked to perfection. The rice was delicious and the potato wedges tasty. The only issue that didn’t make me give 5 stars was the fact that my wife ate with me as well and her chicken plate was a bit dry. However, she enjoyed the other items on her dish and would return as well. I am looking forward to going back and to trying something else on the menu.

Wow! Restaurant quality comfort food, at an amazing price. The place’s main drawback I assume is their location, as they’re hidden in the back of the Bandera Trails(the one with the Gold’s Gym) strip mall on the north side of the 1604/Bandera intersection. By hidden I mean, behind the gym, the Blockbuster(they still exist!), and the Falcon Bank. Once we found the place, this was like a dream for my wife and myself. A waiter opened the door for us before we even parked, and walked us through their menu of rotisserie chicken, pork, and caribbean small eats. Every meal comes with Cuban roasted refried black beans with just a bit of white cheese, similar to quesillo. They reminded my wife of the anafre beans from her childhood Honduras, and they’re cooked perfectly, not oily like *cough* Tex-mex refried beans, and not dry and cracking like some overcooked beans. You know a place is amazing when the complimentary munchies are delicious before you even get to the ordered food. The rotisserie chicken is roasted like your basic rotisserie, and comes in three flavors — — Original, which should not be confused for ordinary, because the sauce is like a fantastic mix of pesto, cilantro, and a bunch of other rich flavors. — Jamaican Jerk, which despite their claims, is not really spicy, but sort of a sweet barbecue with a richer sauce, complex and terrific. — Honey Pineapple BBQ, which we have yet to try. The pork ribs are also cooked perfectly, so they pull right off the bone, and mixed with any of their three sauces. I also like their Cuban sandwich, which has a deep sweet mustard to go with ham, roasted pork, and cheese. The potato wedges are nicely spiced, but otherwise ordinary. Slaw consists of slightly pickled shredded cucumbers. All in all, this place has the best roast chicken I’ve had in San Antonio. As it is, the place is just a casual comfortable restaurant, where you can order almost anything on the menu for $ 8, leave half your food, and still go home stuffed and satisfied.

Calypso is a brand new restaurant in Helotes. I was hoping for the best, but I have to say this did not impress me. I’m not sure what to chalk it up to, but I really hope they get a following because this area can always use good restaurants. Here is the breakdown: Rotisserie chicken: I went with the Honey-pineapple BBQ. It was not anything special. Tasted exactly like the description. Take some honey, some pineappled juice and add to bbq sauce. Rub on chicken and bake. That is literally how ho-hum the taste was. Island pork: This dish has potential. Spiced very nicely and it was juicy. Not a dry piece in the area. Very tasty meat. Maybe it can share its secret to tastiness with the chicken? Potato wedges: These were quite surprising. Spiced with what seemed like an adobo seasoning, these little wedges of crispy delight were the only thing that would entice me to give this place a second chance. Jicama Slaw: I found who was responsible for the great cilantro shortage of 2011. This slaw! It was cilantro overload. Totally took away from the flavor that the jicama and other spices could have presented. Plantains: Not bad, but no matter how deep I reach into my Hispanic heritage, I am not sure if I will ever like plantains. Don’t hold this against Calypso. It is not their fault. I won’t totally write this place off but it might take some more people giving it awesome reviews before I will go back.

The entrance look a little plain and the kitchen was a little to visible recommend to throw some fruits or decorations to distract us when ordering. Dining room looked real nice, looked like I was going to pay an arm and and a leg not at all. Also caribbean music gave it a nice environment. Not to loud but just enough to tap your foot or sing along just mind your company and neighbors. I had the slider trio with calypso potato wedges and pineapple coconut rice. The trio could use a different bread and maybe toasted it was on a regular hamburger bun the meat I order was original ok flavor for the non risk takers next time going for the honey-pineapple BBQ or jamaican jerk. Potato wedges had a slight spicy flavor enough to sip on the drink and go for more. Now the rice was an unexpected flavor well not really they tell you what it is and wysiwyg(google it) just gotta to try it. My wife had the torta with original pulled pork, refried Cuban black beans and caramelized plantains. Beans were topped with a little cilantro and white cheese. The plantains were in good flavor just needed some cream to top it off. The sandwich was again good original flavor just needed the extra kick, trying the BBQ or jerk next time. Also had the coconut flan very sweet and delicious just hit the spot for the end. Overall great experience going back for more new flavors.

Calypso Rotisserie is one of the newest restaurant dining options in the Bandera Road and Loop 1604 location of Northwest San Antonio. Pierre Kranzle, formerely with Azuca branched out and opened this Caribbean, health-conscious, affordable restaurant. It’s a brightly colored; casual restaurant. When you enter you place your order with your cashier and then they bring the food to you. The tables are pre set with napkins and utensils so there’s no hunting around for anything. We dined for dinner the night of August 11th. The restaurant is known for their rotisserie style chicken. The«original» is a citrus-herb but there’s also honey-pineapple BBQ and Jamaican Jerk. Like dummies my husband and I ordered the exact same thing but as Pierre was in the restaurant that evening he encouraged us to try another flavor and brought us a sample of the honey-pineapple BBQ; yum! It’s sweet and flavorful with some kick! We ordered the Half & Half; a quarter of a rotisserie chicken and a choice of soup or salad. We each chose the salad. There is a build our own salad; salad bar with all the healthy choices of greens and veggies to include diced tofu and dried fruits. When they bring you your meal they also bring you a appetizer serving of Cuban black beans; the re-fried version. Oh my! They are warm served with baked flour and corn tortilla chips(nothing friend mind you). They are delicious! The meal is also served with a ramekin of crispy tropical slaw. Talk about tasty! The cole slaw consists of cucumber, jicama and mango. So juicy, crunchy and flavorful. We were so full just on this meal alone that we neglected to order the coconut flan! The other dessert choices are cheese cake with pineapple relish and chocolate cake with mango purée. We can’t tell you how happy we are to have this addition in Helotes and we’ll definitely be back again to try the other items. Welcome to the neighborhood!
