Though the food here is tasty, the staff especially at the billing counter are very firm. The prices that are charged are completely different & higher from what is written on the menu. When asked they proclaim proudly that the prices have changed around 6 months ago. But no one cares to update the menu accordingly. Most often the dressing on the salads is barely sufficient. On the whole I would go to this place only because there is no other restaurant in the near vicinity.

Café 28 is a corporate cafeteria located in the Monument buildings by Worldgate Plaza. It’s not a place most Unilocalers are likely to end up unless you work in the building or have some oddly specific quest where you absolutely, positively, MUST eat at every restaurant in Herndon before you die. That said… The good: The food is tasty! Easily one of the most important parts of any restaurant, the food and the service that comes with it is fairly top notch! The crew(who always seem to be in a good mood and having a great time) pulls everything together quiet nicely even during the dread Lunch Rush™. Most of the cooking is done on massive industrial panini presses/hotplate combos. It’s odd to watch, but they manage to pull it off extremely well. The gyro is hands down my favorite. It’s got a great mix of feta, meat and fresh veggies and really hits the spot. The breakfast wraps are also really big, extremely filling and come with potatoes and fresh fruit(yes, fresh!). They have a big variety of drinks, snacks and chips(so even if you’re not wanting a meal you can always grab a quick nibble without breaking the bank). So it works two-fold as a café and convenience store to some degree. The bad: It’s expensive. You’re likely pay about 25% more for your lunch time meal for the convenience of getting it in the building. There are other locations in the general area within a 5 minute walk so it really depends on A) how lazy you feel that day B) how bad traffic is and C) how lazy you feel that day. Still, the food is surprisingly higher quality than I’d have expected and is actually fairly good. I can forgive the price because it’s a corporate cafeteria. I’m not a fan of it, but with the quality and convenience it’s hard to argue. I’m giving it a 4 for food quality, the fact the café is clean and holds itself it a high standard.

My trips to Café 28 have all but stopped due to the increased pricing and lack of internet or phone orders, but on days when I dash out of the house w/o my lunch I usually go there. Today I ordered one of my «usual» sandwiches, a BLT, and today for the 3rd consecutive time I was asked if I wanted lettuce and tomato on my sandwich. REALLY??? Please bring back the former cooks & staff, they knew that L and T in a BLT is lettuce and tomato. Or please train the staff better on what makes up the sandwiches offered.

As of 4÷28÷14 Café 28 has a new menu. Kudo’s to them for revamping the entire menu and offering vegetarian options. Today I had the portabella panini without cheese. I was expecting a healthy lunch! What I got in return was portabella mushrooms and red peppers that were drenched in oil, the bread was all soaked, yuck! Now, the taste was good, if you want to down about 8oz of oil, but NOT what it is advertised as, healthy. Looks like I will be sticking to their black bean burger which is the best I’ve had any where.

I usually set the bar pretty low when it comes to cafes/restaurants located in a corporate office building… but this one surprised me. I find the flow a bit odd though … you move through the line and order at the register which is at the end of the line, then back track and wait for your food to be prepared. It would make more sense to have your order taken at the beginning of the line then all you have to do is pay at the end; or the alternative — place the register at the beginning, order and pay all up front then move down the line to wait for your food. So I ordered the Fuji Apple Salad with Chicken. This salad was huge and came with several pieces of warm pita bread. It was loaded with walnuts, tomato, red onion, chicken, and(of course) Fuji apple slices. It was fresh, crisp, and had a great contrast of textures and flavors. It was served with just the right amount of the vinaigrette dressing. I would certainly be interested in eating here again and trying other items from the menu.

Most people would never know this place existed. It is located in the lobby of the office building at 2553 Dulles View Drive. A bit off the street, and there are no signs to indicate the place exists. Café 28 serves coffee, tea, breakfast, salads, hot and cold sandwiches, wraps and more. Breakfast foods consist of a variety of breakfast sandwiches, bagels, omelets, pancakes, and breakfast Burritos. I ordered their«Grilled Rachel on Rye» sandwich. It consists of grilled smoked turkey, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, toasted rye bread, and Russian dressing. The sandwich was very tasty, hot, savory, and very yummy! Definitely will find reasons to come back here again and try out some other stuff! Café 28 opens at 8:00 am and closes at 3:00 pm.
