Busiest Indian snack restaurant I have ever seen! Wonder why they don’t expand their business and bring in some order? Items are haphazardly priced, menu board does not clearly list items that are available. Must be a regular to know the mind of the owner, I suppose? Name of the restaurant is very apt but it is run like a snack shop gone amuck so that the highlight which is the chutney– there were many to choose from– were not given enough/any spotlight!

Giving 1 star as Unilocal does not have option to give zero stars. This place is very unhygenic and the lady over the counter is very rude. She speaks as if she is doing a charity service even though we pay and talk nicely. I saw small died roaches in the food. I have showed it to them and they dont even bother to care about that, just gave another new plate. Avoiding it completely from now.

This place needs to shut down… Food not so great as people who makes it are not passionate about it. Secondly, they make a mistake and does not care and argue over it. Dirty floor and kitchen area.

Tea the make here is nice, really fresh and piping hot. The service is superb and the food is made fresh right in front of you, like a see through kitchen.

I was really hopeful for this place! The Tamarind rice had a strange uncooked spice taste and left a nasty taste in my mouth. Husband refused to eat the rice. Dosa was dry and stingy with potatoes and onion. The Samosas were good.

If you have a problem eating in a Hole in the Wall, average looking place, look somewhere else! If you are fine with good, fresh food prepared right in front of you, then give this place a try. Excellent, simple vegetarian fares from South of India. Their Dosas –regular and the green Pesarattu, both, are fresh and excellent. A must have. Ask for the ginger chutney– sweet and sharp at the same time. Choley Bhatura is pretty good too. The Bhaturas are fresh and piping hot. Try the Chilli Pakoras and Vadas if you are more adventurous and can handle a little more heat. Check with them, what time they make those, cause they taste really good fresh from the oil.yum. Idlis are also pretty good. Biryani is average. More like an Indian style Pilaf. Nothing great about it. Also end it with a cup of Indian Chai. Staff is excellent and if you care to explain them a little bit carefully, they will give you the best recommendations. They just need a little bit of explaining, English not being their first Language. Highly Recommended. Not a date night place though.

The place has gone to the dumps. They used to serve fresh South Indian good. The last time I went they tried to pass a Masala Dosa for a Paper Masala dosa which is usually crispier. The lady at the counter wouldn’t even listen. The only advantage of this place is that it is open from 3 to 5 during which time none of the other South Indian restaurants are closed. Avoid this like flu!!!

Came to this place for the first time and ordered a plate of Mirchi bajji. they were 4 And I said I d rather have by piece. He said sorry I have charged you and I can’t refund. I need to explain to the management. What kind of management runs the place where the customer is forced to buy food when they don’t want to. Atleast have a proper menu on the board with quantities. Awful service. Will Never come back here again.

Worst service the lady in counter speaks as if she is doing charity… no courtesy in service… with the the way Indian restaurants are opening in the area if they continue like this they might close very soon.

Did you know that if you cook a carrot long enough, it’ll turn brown? Did you know the same thing is true for broccoli? Did you know that you can cook a green bean for so long that it becomes tough like leather? I did not know any of these things until I ate lunch at Chutney’s Vegetarian today. I am a longtime vegetarian and a lifetime lover of Indian food. I have eaten good Indian food and amazing Indian food and some very bad Indian food. But never, NEVER have I eaten Indian food as bad as what I was served at Chutney’s. The vegetable birnyani was a mélange of cooked-into-oblivion vegetables and dried out, flavorless rice. The portions are enormous, and despite having eaten only a small amount before trashing the majority of my lunch and leaving, my stomach felt gross and unhappy almost immediately after leaving. Inside, the restaurant isn’t clean or well appointed(by comparison, a McDonald’s seems wildly luxurious), and the service was minimal at best. I will not return to Chutney’s and would advise you to stay away.

This place sucks! Very unhygenic. I bought Upma and roaches with it. Avoid to go here. I called the restaurant and complained about it. The guy said“is it? well manager is not here call after 7:00P.M”. That guy was crazy like i know there are roaches but we take precautions while cooking. I don’t want my money back and definetly not the replacement of upma. People just avoid to go here you definetly won’t want to throw up. I don’t want to give 1star but damn Unilocal wants to select star.

Not very good. Not very bad either. I wouldn’t go back and I live very close. I had the masala dosa it was soggy and just meeh. The plus side they have good mango lassi and it’s only $ 1.99. And the free soup they give you is good too. I ate a soup and a few bites of the dosa and threw the rest away. I wanted to like this place :(I will be trying the other Indian restaurant next door next.

Food matches the uncleanliness of this place. The samosas tasted as if they were fried in dumped oil from McDonald’s that has been reused 100 times. Wondering why the health officials have not looked into this place…

I found Chutney’s a few months ago on Unilocal!as it was four stars and went to check it out. There was a line out the door solely comprised of Indians so I was pretty excited. Listening to the orders it was«masala dosa… masala dosa. 2 masala dosas» so taking the advice of the locals, when I got to the front I chanted«masala dosa», paid a surprisingly low amount, and stepped aside to wait for my food like everyone else. I took it home and it was fabulous. They include three little sauces and a soup that’s really tasty. I forget how much everything was but it’s well under $ 10 for some of the best Indian food I’ve ever eaten(and I love Indian!). What cracks me up is it looks like others have gone to Chutneys due to their high star rating(back then) and were disappointed. They don’t like the atmosphere, they don’t like the fried dishes, they don’t like don’t like don’t like. Did they listen to the locals? Did they chant«masala dosa»? No? Probably not. If you try Chutneys, chant like the locals do, and then see what you think. If it was better put together I’d give it 5 stars but I have knocked off one for the restaurant décor, even though the people at the register are always friendly and now recognize me as a regular masala dosa chanter. But heck, forget the restaurant, take the food home, and feast!

It a small place in clocktower area. There are few chairs and tables outside the restaurant where you can eat. We went there for evening snacks and we had a mixed experience. the Tea was«OK» not bad. the pakodas were very oily. Infact they were not very warm either .The mirchi bhaji was nice … Recommendation: If you want to kill time and spend time with friends gossiping along with tea and pakoda .this is the right place.:)

First, briefly, the food. The food was delicious. I’m thin and exercise a lot, so the amount of butter(and ghee is so much more delicious than normal butter) doesn’t bother me. I ordered the Spring Masala Dosa, and it was such a pleasure to eat. That is where any good points end. The atmosphere of this place was a killer nightmare, and I like carefree hole-in-the-wall joints more than most. The unsmiling cashier stared me down as I looked at the menu, like I was slowing everything down, even though I was the only person in the store. The menu is posted on signs across the top of the counter-area, and of course every item lacks even a basic description, and price. I ended up going with familiar words(I know Spring, Masala, and Dosa, so it seemed safe), but if you’re not familiar with Indian cuisine you will be at a complete loss. The expression on the attendant’s face made it clear I was not going to receive friendly clarification from her. So I placed my order, and then, oh no! It’s one of those frustrating places that has a minimum $ 10 charge, even though presumably not a dish on the menu costs that much. Sucks if you don’t carry cash and you’re stopping by for a meal, doesn’t it? So I panned the menu and also ordered a Miryani Veg. Rice, again searching for familiar words(I have not yet tasted this dish; it is in the fridge as I type). I hate that policy when prices are designed to be under $ 10. I ordered my two dishes. The first move she made was to grab a lidded disposable Tupperware and chuck it in a microwave… what? That is not at all what I was expecting considering half of their tiny kitchen is dominated by a griddle. While my rice dish was microwaving she was talking to another customer that came in. The new customer placed her order. I watched as her food was prepared, she was served, and she left. Then the attendant stared at me for a brief second, before turning to start making the second dish I’d ordered. After I ordered my food, someone else that came in and ordered had her food made and left before my food began cooking. It seemed at that point they were trying their hardest to baffle me with poor service. I even tried to get a to-go menu to take with me so I could call ahead if the food merited another visit, but apparently these are not available. The food was delicious, and I’d like to eat it again. But I will have to decide if any food is worth the toll it takes to stand in a place like that. What a waste of a delicious product.

Good food but take it to go! This place is a dump but has two security cameras(: not sure what’s worth securing? Probably the most unfriendly service but maybe because they had to work on Labor Day? On the bright side I really enjoyed the food. We had the Veg Utappam and Spring masala dosa.
