This place is no longer in business. Just drove up & the signs and all are still up but it’s totally empty.

Wilks skillet is hands down the bests home cooking you will ever eat out at a restaurant. No disrespect for my family of course but I have to say the seasoning is spot on the taste is fabulous if you haven’t tried it please stop in they are located right off Lexington Avenue in High Point absolutely fabulous food. It is my only request for extended hours on Saturday would be wonderful for a dinner hour, for those of us to have to work on Saturdays too.

This soul food restaurant started out on Prospect Street 3 or 4 years ago, moving here in 2013 after the original spot was heavily damaged by fire. The place is small, 5 or 6 tables, with a couple of picnic tables in front of the restaurant, not much to look at, but it is clean and bright. The menu is not all that broad, offering Fried Chicken, Chicken Liver, Grilled Chicken, Pork Chops, Hamburger Steak, Whiting, Croaker, and Salmon Cakes, with sides of collards, pintos, fried okra, rice and gravy, slaw, and more. Sandwiches include hot dog, hamburger, cheeseburger sub, pork chop sandwich, several chicken sandwich choices, several fish sandwiches, and more. We ordered the Fried Chicken(2 piece dark meat for $ 6.25), the Whiting(2 pieces for $ 10.25), and of course, a Hot Dog($ 1.50). Each plate comes with 2 sides, so we had Rice & Gravy and Fried Okra with the chicken, and FFs and Slaw with the whiting. Unfortunately, the collards and pintos were not ready or we would have picked them for sure, and though they open at 10:30, things appear to start rather slowly here. Our bread choices were rolls and fried cornbread. This is not a fast food restaurant, the Fried Chicken and the Whiting were cooked to order so it took a little time, between 15 and 20 minutes. The Fried Chicken was excellent, perfectly cooked, loaded with fresh chicken flavor, with that bare hint of greasiness that defines it as Southern fried chicken. The rice and gravy was solid, and the fried okra was tasty, but a bit overcooked. The Whiting was as good as any I’ve had in this part of the state, and I eat a good deal of this particular fish, and the only way you’ll get it done better, is to catch the fish yourself, and fry it up the same day. The FFs were not especially good, they no longer hand cut the fries like they did at Prospect Street — they use those awful ridged things. The slaw was good, the fried cornbread was very, very sweet — put some butter and syrup on it, and you got a pancake. The Hot Dog was solid, with a decent wiener, and nice meaty chili. The folks who runs this place are super friendly and very helpful. The music is loud, and that is a bit of a distraction, but the food is worth it, and take out is an option. By the way, the name of the restaurant is Wilk’s Skillet.

Sitting on site as I’m writing this. It was so good I could not wait and risk forgetting to do so. This is my first review on Unilocal and it could not go to a more delicious and deserving restaurant. I had the two piece white meat chicken dinner(unbelievable how fresh, hot, and delicious it was; and so much meat on the pieces), with the best Mac&cheese and fried okra(I have lived in Georgia my whole life so that’s a pretty big statement). I also tried chicken livers for the first time, my dad loved them but they are definitely a required taste. The double fried cornbread was a surprise, cause it was not what we were expecting, but we were not in the least disappointed. Now eating homemade peach cobbler; So Good!!! Overall best soul food restaurant I’ve ever had the pleasure of dining at(again I’ve lived in Georgia my whole life, so again a big statement). The staff is so nice, welcoming, and friendly and work hard to make sure you are pleased. I will definitely be back.

If you truly love soul food and southern cuisine you do want to try Wilkes Skillet. The fried chicken alone is worth the visit, it may be the best that you have ever had(after that try the pork chops, they are solo good that you might forget eating at home). Their side dishes collards, greens and home made macaroni and cheese will no doubt satisfy the most discriminate dinner, they are delicious. The restaurant is not fancy, it is immaculate and the owners welcome you with open arms.
