I live in the area and have tried this place every 6 months or so. I usually go into red bank for Mexican but it is cold and I needed something fast. I love Mexican food because it has flavor. I have tried many items on the menu and everything is bland! Tons of boiled chicken and tasteless meat but not spices or typical Mexican taste. Maybe they cook for an audience that does not like spice. Additionally we had two margaritas at the bar while we waited and our take out was over $ 50 for 2. The atmosphere is nice and friendly. But I am totally out. No more attempts to find something good on the menu. I am sticking with red bank.

The bartender was drunk He was too busy hitting on women to do his job The order was completely wrong The bartender even walked out on the bar to hang out with his friends at a table

I have been here several times now as a sit down at a table customer. One thing I can say is that even though I don’t drink, the bar in this place looks like so much fun! The bartenders are so cheerful. The staff is pleasant and quick to attend to you. This place has the best Guacamole I have ever had in my life. I don’t even like Guacamole from other restaurants. It is delicious. I have tried some of the specials and they have all been great. We will be back!

This used to be my favorite Mexican restaurant. Until tonight. We received the wrong drinks. No problem! We ordered steak fajitas and cheese enchiladas. Waiting for 40 minutes was no problem(even though we were the only table)! The problem was getting the wrong food and when we told the waitress, she dumped ranchero sauce on the plate and told us it was right. She then hid in the kitchen. Never going back.

Was here last night again with the hubby and our 15m old. We walked this time as its a 4 min. walk from our house. I had the Chiles Relleons 17.99 Egg battered poblano stuffed pepper, filled w/chicken, raisins, almonds, pineapple & plantain, covered w/tomato sauce & smothered w/cheese. I lovvvvvvve stuffed peppers and this was perfect and Eden perfect today for lunch! We also ordered chicken tapas, Mexican pizza, a shrimp app, and the chicken quesadillas for our son. My second favorite was the quesadillas, and probably my favorite quesadilla I’ve ever tried!

Came here after mountain biking at Hatshorne. The air conditioning and Margaritas it’s were exactly what I needed! The salsa and guacamole are homemade and very excellent. The bartender was super friendly and nice.

After being recommended to have great Mexican food here we gave it a shot. Waited 45 minutes for our food that was extremely disappointing. Would never recommend this place to anyone. Food was cold, bland and overpriced. Go down the street to Inlet Café and have a bowl of lobster bisque! Don’t waist your time or money here!

I came in because my friend suggested it due to good reviews on Google. We came in and we were not greeted or asked how many in our party. The waitress/manager plopped the menus on the table and walked away. We ordered chicken enchiladas(picture attached with hair) and carne asada tacos. The carne asado tacos, their meat was very fatty and thin. The enchiladas chicken was very dry and when I got to my portion I found a hair! I spoke to the waitress and she apologized and said that it was on the house but no longer came to our table after we no longer wanted to eat. Overall the service was very poor and the food was not of high quality. I would never recommend this place.

Great service! The waitress was very polite and helpful. Prices are fair, and a lot of food was served. Their complimentary salsa is FANTASTIC. My husband ordered beef tacos and i ordered the Tostadas. The portions were good and well made however the meat had no salt whatsoever. My husband and i had to sprinkle quite a bit of salt on our plates and once we did the food was great. I’m still giving 4 stars because it was an easy fix with table salt.

Excellent food and service. Great sangria and love the daily specials. Specifically, I’ve had the empanadas, fajitas, and quesadillas. All the dishes are fresh and authentic. Recently they had a crab jalapeño popper appetizer. Needless to say it was delicious. Great place if you want authentic Mexican.

I always have a great time when I go to chilangos. The staff is super nice and welcoming. The food is classic good mexican and you won’t be let down for a great sangria to wash it all down. The endless amounts of chips and salsa is always a nice touch for when I come in starving !

Experienced Chilango’s for the first time recently. Highlands is a summer town so given we were there in the winter the place was pretty empty. The food was fantastic. We ate the bar and given the Mexican style I decided to order a Tequila sunrise. The bartender, who was a very courteous, personable young gentlemen offered to make me his version of a tequila sunrise called a Chilango’s TLC which was fantastic! The owner also passed through and offered us a complimentary tasting of a few tequilas. Overall it was a great experience. We will return soon!

HATETHISPLACE… They say after Sandy that Highlands is still struggling and to come down and support the restaurants there… Well I went here last night and it wasnt crowded at all, No one greeted us at the door we kind of stood there like hello… SERVICEISAWFUL!!! I understand when the restaurant has friends or loyal locals come in and you want to give them the best service possible and sit and chat with them but all night? It took forever for the waiter to come and take our order, we waited 45 minutes for our food and the drinks were weak and weird. My boyfriend ordered a frozen margarita with salt and he got one with no salt and something kind of fruit he drank it because who knows when we were going to see the waiters again. We ordered fajitas very little meat and a ton of veggies mostly onions — I understand onions are a vegetables but it was mostly onions hardly any peppers and they had carrots in it too too weird. FOODAWFUL Then we asked for the check and waited 20 minutes for it and as we were leaving the owner was like hey thanks for coming. Really now you acknowledge us… YOU just lost any future business from us and our friends — you should treat every customer the same and give them a great dinning experience so they will want to come back and tell their friends. I WILLNEVERBEBACK

I immediately liked the place because they had their own parking lot across the street. Convenience is a huge plus! As soon as I walked into the restaurant it smelled like urine, but I had been on a no carb diet and had been craving Mexican food for so long I had to try it. The server was so rude she didn’t say hello,(nor did the bartender, it was lunch the place was empty!) didn’t ask me and my boyfriend what we wanted to drink, nothing. We had no choice but to kill Her with kindness. Guacamole came and I never ever ever add salt to anything but I continuously poured salt over the Guacamole because there was no flavor whatsoever. Same with the chips. Cold, stale and flavorless. Chimichanga had that tomato sauce on top which I hate! Ugh. I want cheese and sour cream. My biggest complaint about it was that the tortilla was soggy and mushy. Yuck. Never going back because of the service(which was horrendous) and the tasteless careless food.

Skip. Plenty of better options all with better views in Atlantic highlands. Ate off kids and lunch menu– fish tacos, chicken tacos and chicken quesadilla. All very bland and lacked sufficient sides. I mean who serves a chicken taco with nothing but a tortilla and chicken. Really?! No cheese. No salsa. No lettuce or tomatoes? Just dry. Ugh. Authentic? Not even close. Chips and salsa on the house pre ordering was decent and mild enough for kids. $ 3 sangria was a good deal but weak as you’d expect. Lunch menu was all under $ 10 but regular menu looked to be a complete rip off. $ 18 burrito? Stupid. And as only guests in this place I can’t believe I had to ask for water three times to actually get it. And good luck getting a to go container. Ps why have basically pitch black lighting in the bathrooms?! Go elsewhere.

*chicken empanada(fried handmade corn tortilla stuffed with chicken and cheese topped with lettuce, pico de gallo, and cream; OMG!!! This was fabulous! The chicken was super moist and there was a whole bunch of it in there; thoroughly enjoyed the handmade tortilla, it was crispy, savory and had the perfect flavor to it; the stuffing was creamy and I can’t even describe to you how good this was!) *Chilangos mofongo(the plantains were nice and ripe, but there wasn’t enough plantains in proportion with the pork on the plate; the pork was cooked nicely but definitely a little salty; there was too much pork mixed in with the mofongo; the chili sauce they added on top of the mofongo and pork was interesting; it tasted liked dried chilis that were pureed into a thick sauce; the refried beans were alright but I think they needed more salt; the rice was pretty good and cooked perfectly; the salad that came with it was surprisingly one of my favorite things on the plate, it had a nice vinaigrette mixed with it; overall, I thought the dish was good and very filling but the Havana Central mofongo is the best!!!) *fish taco(let’s talk about this taco! Corona beer battered cod fish that was filled with lettuce, tomato, cream, cheese and guacamole; this was awesome!!! the batter was nice and crispy and flavorful, it had the perfect crunch, the fish was moist and flaky; I loved the guacamole which was definitely homemade; this taco was super good; definitely 100% better than Jose Tejas but different than Taqueria) *tres leches cake(it was decent; I thought it was WAY too sweet and there wasn’t enough milk in the cake and on the plate; it was good but definitely the one at Señorita’s in Bloomfield is better) *vegetable chimichanga(not bad, the veggies were cooked nice) *red sangria(yummy!!! not too strong thankfully but very refreshing after a day on the beach, not a lot of fruit inside the pitcher but fruity enough when you’re drinking it) Never in a million years would I think I would be back at this restaurant but it was good both times I went despite the gap in time which means that they have been consistent in putting out good food, if I’m in that area, I would go back!

Cute little place in a cute little town. Tasty margaritas and burritos. Fairly priced. Deducting one point because the guacamole was only so-so. Everything else was excellent.
