Pissy attitude and poor customer service from the barista woman. Ordered 2 mochas and received a dagger stare in return. I should have walked from that moment. Mochas were below average. Starbucks makes a better mocha. Bears’ Coffee and Sharks(across the street) was recommended by a local. Next time I will take my business to Sharks.

No matter who owns Bears it remains steadfast and some decent stuff. Simple concept and menu but hearty, and always that feel good comfy café feel. This place is consistent in all that is good, mediocre and bad and it makes me laugh actually. I think it’s neat. I love the coziness and the actual café so I frequent here with my laptop. There’s free wifi for patrons and it’s a sweet spot to do some computer work or internet surfing. Especially over a yummy sammy or lox and bagel or big salad plate or Mexican coffee… my go tos. Yum. Not wowzahs, but mmm mmm. My best tip is to find what you like and stick with it. Because in all honesty it’s not the best or freshest food around downtown for sure and the coffee is hopefully brewed in the mornings, but some dishes work well and you may be coming here more for the environment or crowd. I like to get deli sandwiches sometimes, not all the time, but mainly when I’m feeling nostalgic. One with a lot of sprouts. It was the first thing I ever ate at Bears when I was a young girl. I always missed the place when I was living away, mainly because I thought it was so cool growing up. I mean it was a café with coffeeeeee. Anyway, I get the bagels for breakfast and tend to stick around their healthier plates. Safe plates too. The salads are very nicely portioned and delicious. The coffee is okay. I do the Mexican. I’ve had much much better many many places but I love the size of this guy and all the sweetness. They have whipped cream… gah! Googly eyes. Plus when in Hilo… So like I said, not the best, but awesome if you’re the type and a regular. Some decent and good food can be found and coffee that does the trick. If it were a coupe dollars less, I’d be around more. I like the same style of food a few other places at similar prices downtown. Oh and like it’s always been since forever, the place is kinda gross-some days more than others. If you’re unlucky you’ll see a few roaches. Eeek. Yup. That’s the paradox. Such a charming and lovely café with some grunge beneath the surface. It doesn’t totally turn me off.

Just a nice cozy café/restaurant in downtown Hilo. Great mellow atmosphere and delicious breakfast and lunch. Belgian waffles and fresh fruit was amazing. Much better local experience than eating in a hotel. Highly recommend for casual dining experience and great start to the day.

Yummy eggs Benedict, sauce just the right amount of tangy-ness. Very delicious waffle with home made coconut syrup. Bonus points for the coconut syrup! Perfect sweet papaya. And a good strong coffee to top it all off!

Small café in downtown Hilo, HI. Perfect place to stop by for some breakfast. First time I came here, I ordered a cheese bagel and cream cheese to go. Oh so nice nicely toasted and a good amount of cream cheese. Pricing isn’t too bad, either. I’ve paid more at Starbucks for lesser quality. Today I ordered an egg dish. It had spinach and cheese and ham. It tasted awesome. I also ordered a plain bagel with cream cheese. I can say that Bears coffee is my new favorite breakfast place on the big island. Lastly, this place is super baby friendly!!! There’s enough space to get my stroller through and enough room to park at the table. Customer service is totally awesome when the little ones come in with you. I highly recommend this place.

A+. Stay away from the big resorts and hotels. Castle charges you $ 25 per person for a breakfast buffet. Bears is simple, clean, great prices, great food.

This is one of my all time favorite coffee shops. Do yourself a favor and order one of their delicious Island coffees and a waffle plate with their fresh papaya. You’ll get lost in the splendid pleasure of it. The folks working there are very sweet. It’s like everyone’s is their family, just over for coffee and something to eat. What a sublime experience. If you don’t finish your coffee there, take it to go on your way down to the waterfront.

My friend and I split the bagel & lox, it was super delicious! Service was excellent– we had several servers asking us if we needed anything. Will definitely return :)

I come here every chance I get. Everything has been delicious so far. And the prices are amazingly low. Like an angel wrote the prices. Add a small salad for only $ 3. House Honey Mustard dressing, so ono.

I can’t speak to the other dishes offered at this restaurant, because I’ve only tried the Salmon Eggs Benedict that is available on Sundays. This dish was VERY rich, and left me feeling ill for several hours. I think the combination of salmon(they provided generous servings) and a lot of sauce was just too rich for me. The eggs Benedict is also available with ham, so I’d recommend those of us who aren’t used to extra rich food to go with that over the salmon, and ask them to go light on the sauce. Again, I haven’t tried anything else at this place and they may have other fine dishes. Overall this was a cute little restaurant.

Day after gorging ourselves on pancakes at Ken’s we were looking for a little bit lighter breakfast and Bears hit the mark. Coffee was fresh and hot. Had the yogurt and fruit plate topped with granola and banana, papaya, and blueberries(and a lone starfruit). Great way to start the day.

We had a lovely and affordable meal! Our waitress was very kind and accommodating. We’d definitely come back. I had waffle with fruits and a side of bacon. My hubby had the salmon sandwich!

Fresh food, friendly service, fascinating view of the daily sidewalk parade. Had a chicken salad wrap chock full of precious macadamia nuts at an astoundingly low price.

Your food doesn’t impress me. Your coffee is bitter. You don’t offer much. The old owner was at least nice.

If you like your eggs«nuked» so they are like car tires, then come and eat here. We should have known we were making a mistake when told the chef could not prepare them«lightly cooked» for risk of us getting salmonella! I will never return. By the way new owners since last year, so guess terry has left

I would give this place zero stars if Unilocal would let me. First off I got my food to go and the WHOLE order was wrong. I don’t have rocks in my mouth when talking. I will not be back. I spent $ 27 on breakfast only to come home and discover incompetence. Place was dirty too
