This is like the free section of Honolulu Craigslist on crack. Freecycle is an environmentally and economically-friendly way of getting rid of your items that you no longer use/have a need for. Instead of throwing it away with the rest of your household trash, maybe there’s someone in Wahiawa or Kalihi that could use your old washer/dryer set that you don’t use since you bought a new one. Or, maybe you’re a person looking for half a dozen empty 40-lb kitty litter buckets to use as storage bins or plain containers — well, someone in Punchbowl might have some they’re getting rid of! The latter was my case. :p I had half a dozen empty buckets that I didn’t want to throw out; I put an ad on Freecycle Honolulu & got half a dozen responses! I’m proud to say that all of my buckets found new lives being repurposed. Freecycle’s motto is: «Think globally, recycle locally.» — If you’re looking to get rid of something, post it here. — If you’re searching for something, post your request here since someone might have what you’re looking for. Pick-up of either a wanted item or an item getting rid of is worked out between the two parties. Some basic guidelines: 1) Everything being given away must be FREE. No «rehoming fees» or anything like that. 2) When posting your request, be sure to have the correct subject line(OFFER, TAKEN, WANTED, or RECEIVED). I.e., When offering an item, use«OFFER.» When the item gets spoken for by someone, use«TAKEN.» If a person receives an item that was offered by another Freecycle Honolulu member, they can send an e-mail out stating«RECEIVED: Insert Name of Item» 3) Posting of an OFFER prior to a WANTED is preferred(this shows you’re willing to share as much as receive). 4) If offering items, follow this subject line format: «OFFER: Name of Item(Location)» 5) To join the community, you have to join through Yahoo! Groups page. It makes it easier if you already have a Yahoo! e-mail account already. A moderator approves the messages that are sent out in this community. 6) Uploading pictures of the items that you’re giving out is always appreciated & will help you get more responses! You can describe the item all you want — which is always great, too! — but seeing the item gives the reader instant feedback of what you’re offering. 7) Offer items that are in good condition, at the least. No offer puka-puka(holes) BBD’s or something that’s been trashed, completely stained, etc. Describe the condition of the item that it’s in and if there’s any scratches, dents, scraps, etc. «Like New» «New» «New in Box» «Excellent Used» are some terms that people use. I’ve given away everything from extra aloe plants, my boyfriend’s old PlayStation 2 black carrying bag, a trash can, purses, brand new cookie cutters, cat items, dog items, empty kitty litter buckets, and MORE! It’s fun, it’s free, and this community is ever-growing. As of now, 4,287 Honolulu folks can’t be wrong! The Honolulu Freecycle group is the most popular, has the most offers of free stuff from people, and covers the entire area of O’ahu; it runs the entire gamut from Kane’ohe and Kailua to Schofield and Makaha. There’s 2 other Freecycle groups on O’ahu that cover the Hawai’i Kai area(east side of the island) and another that covers Central O’ahu. Kaua’i, Maui and the Big Island also have their own Freecycle groups, too! Moloka’i no mo’ yet, though. If you’re interested, check out the websites of each respective Freecycle group and, if you have any questions, e-mail the moderator of the group(e-mail addresses are below). — BIGISLAND — E-mail: Website: — KAUA’I — E-mail:
