Sesame Cafe

I’ve only been here for dim sum. I used to go to Wanderer, however, they closed. Half of their staff went to Sesame Café the other another Chinese restaurant. The name «café» at the end is deceiving. So not many people know they serve dim sum and it’s fairly new at the restaurant.
The price is a bit more than their competitors, but it’s well worth it due to the taste. Their service is great. They’ve recently don’t do the carts and instead have a small menu. I think that’s because they’re not getting as many customers for dim sum. That’s too bad, because I really enjoyed their food and selections! I hope this review helps them a bit more and they get more business. I’ve for sure have introduced friends here.

Great! Finally got dim sum on west side. And I didn’t feel sign of MSG afterwards (my biological sensor makes me so thirsty when MSG is taken). I will definitely go back. Oh slice of purple sweet potato in the end feels so good.

I don’t understand all the low reviews. Had dim Sum there last Sunday and was right up there with the best in the Twin Cities. Everything tasted fresh and the service was great. Will return when I get back from vacation and try some more of the Menu.

Haaaa kauuuu, suiuuuuuuui maiiiiiii dai. So if you been to dim sum. You know the drill. Grab the cart servers ASAP, point to your food, eat up, and get out. They want you in and out and will bombard you with all the delicious Chinese breakfast during the dim sum rush. I’m not a fan of dim sum, but my elders love it! Here’s why:

–Variety, variety, you get anything from dumplings to dessert to noodles to porridge to chicken feet. Wait did I just say chicken feet? Yes I did. If you love your meats and wings. You gotta try this.
–Their homemade mochi balls, yuuuummy! And tofu dessert
–The $ is right. The Chinese got it right, affordable most important meal of the day-​breakfast.
–If you don’t come for the food, the experience alone is delightful.
–Decent bathrooms and plenty of space for large groups
–Family friendly
–Plenty of parking in lot

–For what it is. This place meets your dim sum standards
Tip: if it is your first time to dim sum. Go with someone who knows the ropes or the language or just point. Try it you might like it.
Avoid the food trays it usually is the rejected foods no One wants.

They sell shark fin soup Please boycott them!!! Until they take it off the menu. I would refuse to ever eat there.

After MANY attempt I unfortunately have to write this review.
Chicken is dry
Rest is average
And of the one shining star on the menu (the spring rolls) they are out 60% of the time.
The last time I called in a order for pick up at 2pm on sunday and ordered 2 orders 9f spring rolls. it wasn’t tell I got there that u was told they were out.
I will try them agsin SOMEDAY. Bit when I do I expect an entire menu available till close.

Stopped here recently to try out their new dim sum offering on weekends. I’ve never had the regular food menu here, just dim sum.
It’s located in what I believe used to be part of Lunds and was remodeled into a restaurant space. The interior is nice and has a warm and welcoming feel — can’t go wrong with that, right?!
There was no wait (on Christmas morning at least) and we quickly got a seat. Now, this place is new to dim sum and clearly they’re working out a couple things. The carts are not filled to the top with dim sum goodness, but I get the reason why… they’re making small quantities to keep freshness and avoid massive food waste.
We ordered up the usual — shrimp dumpling, pork dumplings, chicken feet, sticky rice, BBQ pork buns, yellow custard buns and about 8 more things I don’t know the English name for (sorry guys!). At the end of the day, here’s what you need to know…
* food quality isn’t bad — tasty, not cheap ingredients
* service is fast and friendly
* baked goods are solid
* food isn’t HOT — good dim sum is pipping HOT
* price is cheaper than MN average — we had 15 dishes for under $ 50 (that’s a DEAL)
So, give this place a shot, it’s not bad (not the best either)…but it’s better than waiting 40 minutes for a table at the other places :-)

The food is good. But sesame chicken has too much sugar in it, I thought. My favorite are Udon noodle with vegi and meifun. Try BBQ skewers, they are so good!

The portion is a little bit small compare with other places.

I had high hopes, but Meehhhhh…
Ambiance, food, service, everything is just OK. Its not my first, second, or even tenth pick for Chinese food, but I have also had worse.
Service was pleasant but slow. It took a long time to get our food, and once we did get it, it was, at best, luke-​warm.
I ordered the walnut shrimp. It came with white rice and broccoli. The first few bites were delicious, because it was still a little warm, but once it got cold it just wasn’t enjoyable anymore. The one impressive thing about my meal was the size of the shrimp — they were huge.

This place is a solid choice for reasonably priced Chinese food. Admittedly, I would not have tried this place had I checked the Unilocal reviews earlier, as there were only four reviews, all giving it one star. I think those reviews may reflect the growing pains of a new restaurant, as the food was good and the service was very attentive. Try the pot stickers and the hot and sour soup!

Been here twice now and so far it’s ok. However I don’t agree with the previous reviews on one star. There’s not a lot of restaurant options in that part of Hopkins/​Minnetonka. We enjoyed the cream cheese wontons. Wrapper wasn’t too thick like other places. Nice balance of crispy lightness to the amount of cream cheese. Pan fried pot stickers were also good.
For dishes we ordered garlic shrimp– nice tangy sauce with average sized shrimp; caramel sesame chicken– tasty sauce and nice and crispy, however more breading than chicken; Mongolian Beef — flavorful and tender; and lo mien– average, nothing really stood out about the dish.
Overall we would come back if we were in the area and craving Chinese. They started a Dim Sum menu for Saturday and Sunday. Definitely will give that a try sometime.

Overall, Sesame Café is decent place to go for Chinese food.
The food:
Hot and Sour Soup– pretty solid. Very sour and vinegary, which I like, but might not be something for everybody’s taste. I recommend adding a bit of chili oil to the soup. I would order it again.
Pork pan fried pot stickers– typical pot stickers, nothing special. The skin was thick and the meat was juicy.
Cream cheese wontons– similar to crab Rangoons without the crab. Deep fried wonton skin stuffed with cream cheese, tasty!
Sesame chicken– this is their signature dish and it really tastes good. The sugary sesame is not overwhelmingly sweet and it’s really crispy. This americanized dish is not the healthiest but delicious. There is minimal chicken and a lot of breading, but the chicken is white meat and the breading is light.
I recommend the garlic shrimp, the sauce is really nice.
The Service: very friendly and attentive. Our waitress was really nice.
Ambiance: Nothing special. Clean.
I would come back.

Very disappointed. Not worth a visit; certainly not a return visit.

Don’t waste your time, the food was cold, not fresh not flavorful. Not inviting. It was Crap-​tastic, drive 2 miles and go to wok in the park!
Don’t bother going here

I know it’s new. But we expected more from a restaurant attached to a Lund’s. We picked up some of their «Signature» entrees for supper and they were horrible. Very blah. We tried the General Taos chicken, Coconut Curry and the Sweet and Sour chicken. We all agreed it was the worst of those dishes that we’ve ever had. They have a lot of work to do if they’re going to make it through the summer.

I found this place when I was picking up some birthday necessities next door at Lunds. I was intrigued, so I told the boy who is a huge Asian food fan! We got to restaurant and discovered that it was the first day it was open. We were the only 2 in the place and were not surprised since there wasn’t much hype in the area and the signs were hard to see from a distance.
The menu appeared to be abundant. The set up is like Pei Wei where you order sit down then they bring it out. We studied the menu and the staff recommended the spring rolls. at $ 1.95 for 2 we agreed that was a fair price to give it a try. They were definitely tasty, but fairly average.
We were recommended the Carmel Sesame chicken, and ordered that and the Mine Fun. We got both dishes and the Sesame Chicken definitely had a strong caramel taste to it. I kind of enjoyed it, the boy wasn’t a big fan though. The Mine Fun was mediocre, it wasn’t overly flavorful as it just had a very heavy soy sauce to it and I was left a little disappointed (and bloated).
The prices were great! The food was ok. It wasn’t anything that stood out as being amazing and a must return, however given that we were there the first day it was open, I am curious to see how others feel about this place. We agreed we would definitely go back in a few weeks to give it some time to settle from opening, however there are just some aspects that make me concerned about the success of this place… I am hoping they pump up their promotions for sure otherwise it will definitely be a place that goes unnoticed.
We have returned twice now to give it some additional opportunities to redeem itself (since it is new). However, they unfortunately have not done that. We have tried the lettuce wraps… and they are not good, the egg roll and spring rolls are good. The dishes the boy has had have been meh at best as well. There just seems to have a soy sauce taste to all the dishes so its just eh… I think I am at this point giving up on this place…3 strikes and your out… what is odd too is they are closed on all sundays… i find this strange since it is next to lunds which would be optimal to be open to get all the hungry grocery shoppers looking for a quick meal.
