Average-quality sushi which is better than it needs to be, given its location. Fish was acceptable. Portions were respectable. We had a few pieces of assorted nigiri and some of the happy hour appetizers. Fills the void for a last-minute sushi dinner if you happen to live near the area.

Great sushi. Very fresh! A small restaurant and has all day happy hour menu in Sunday’s. Service was a little off. I had to remind them 3 times that I ordered pepper tuna sashimi, by the time I got it I was stuffed but very good food! I will go back when in the area!

Just moved in the area and this was the closest high rated sushi place to me! It was 630ish on a Saturday. This place is smaller than it appears on the outside, and by the cars I thought it for sure there would be a wait. We walked in and there were only like 7? Tables and seats at the bar. Im really shocked it wasn’t busier! We were greeted by everyone as we walked in. And service was chop chop! There was a black guy sitting at a table who’s face I recognized, like I know he was famous I just couldn’t pin point where! So I was staring at him trying to jog my memory… I want to say actor but maybe he was a sports guy. I’ll probably remember in ten months. My boyfriend was facing him and doesn’t have the skills for an incognito photo. Anywaysssss we ordered some gyoza, it was on their 3 $ happy hour menu. Pretty good, sauce with thicker but I liked it more than the typical thinner sauce you get that doesn’t stick. We ordered the Missouri, Boston, and Oklahoma rolls to share. Oklahoma takes a few extra minutes to cook, but we really didn’t notice. We were still eating the other rolls when it arrived. The Boston roll was my fav! Missouri was really good. Oklahoma had more of a fishy taste than the other two so I think it didn’t do well following. Kind of like how lite beer isn’t the bed after a really hop filled beer. Everything was served so fast! This is a great place to go if you have plans nearby and don’t have a lot of time to eat a long meal. My only complaint is the rolls aren’t as big for the price. Other places make them a bit more filling. The quality is still very good. I’m still having a hard time figuring out who that guy is!

LOVETHISPLACE! Typically go during happy hour to get the gyoza(which is great) and their shaggy roll is one of the best I’ve had. Kinda small, but there’s typically seating available. I go here almost once every week. Love it! :)

I come for their happy hour– all weekend and 4−9p on weekdays. Try the peach sake– it’s super tasty. The best deal at happy hour is sashimi. $ 6 for 3 huge pieces of fish, it’s well worth it. They have pretty much any kind of sashimi you could want and they all taste fresh and are cut well. The rest of happy hour are fried appetizers and edamame and the like– all $ 3 each and nothing too spectacular. The rest of the menu is ok; we’ve sampled a few rolls but they’re for the most part pretty small portion sizes and we haven’t had anything that really made us want to order it again. Do not get the ramen– it was terrible. I do like the service here– always super polite and prompt. This spot satisfies our sushi craving without breaking our wallets and we don’t have to drive all the way to Chinatown or upper Kirby to do so so that earns points in my book.

Ordered chicken teriyaki. Food was undercooked. Forced to pay for inedible food. And harassed by restaurant manager and also local security guard. Will never eat there again.

I have tried many different sushi places all around the world. Here in Houston there is a decent selection of places that serves sushi, some high end to low end places. I think Asahi slightly above average. It was raining pretty hard here in Houston(one of our famous flash flood type of days), so instead of dragging the family out in the downpour of rain, I decided to pick up some sushi. So I found this on Unilocal and realized that it is close to my work/medical center and it would not be hard to get to from Bellaire. I jumped in my trusty FJ Cruiser(great vehicle for flooding streets) and drove to Asahi. When I got there, the waiter immediately helped me and offered me water and a menu. I ordered a lot of rolls and hand rolls. The price was pretty good for what you got. My kids loved everything I selected and I was happy. The spicy tuna hand rolls were excellent. I definitely will be back when me and my co-workers are in the mood for sushi.

Small and quiet. Fast and friendly service since they were slightly over staffed, but still busy. Had the Happy Hour(4 to 9 pm) tuna and salmon first. Both were good, fresh, and generous cuts. Then onto the Nemo Roll. Very tasty with just the right amount of spice. I’m a business traveler. This is not a place I’d bring a date or client to, but I will come back for sure. Ask for the Quail Egg Shooter. Off menu, but nicely done.

This is a great spot for a quick sushi fix! I got the seaweed salad, calamari, salmon hand roll, Skydiver roll, and the Firecracker. Although the portions were not that big, you can taste the freshness of the fish. This cute little place gives off a vibe of authenticity and the staff were nice. Good place to satisfy my sushi cravings!

Overall, so so. I’d say a 3.5. Came here for lunch on a Sunday and it was fairly empty, save for two couples. On Sunday they have happy hour deals all day, so that’s pretty nice. We ordered sashimi(salmon, yellow tail, sea bass, escolar, etc) and it was all very fresh and tasty. They give you very thick cuts of fish. In addition to the sashimi assortment, we also ordered the beef udon, the rock n’ roll, spicy tuna roll, and a salmon skin hand roll. The beef udon came in a very large bowl, enough to feed two. The broth was okay, a little too sweet for my taste. Not the best beef udon I’ve had. Noodles and meat were cooked well. For the sushi rolls and hand rolls, the rice was a bit undercooked. The fish was fresh and flavors were good, but nothing to write home about. Again, I wouldn’t go out of my way to come back and order these rolls. Salmon skin was a bit hard to eat and tough to bite into. It’s a good sushi spot, and with very few choices in the area, it’s not a bad option. However, it is unlikely I will go out of my way to come back.

I originally had this review at 4 stars but I had to upgrade to 5; I’ve been back a few times and each visit was better and better. Great sushi, great service. The sushi chef was super sweet and everything came out in a timely manner. Their happy hour specials are great. The service was fast and the sushi is really good. I’m super picky and they never fail to amazing me with the selection and happy hour specials.

Located in the medical center close by NRG on Kirby. I went yesterday to have HH lunch with one of my good girlfriends. Small inside with laid back atmosphere and reasonable cheap prices for the food. I had the crab puff, and shumai for an appetizer. Shumai was very tasty. Crab puff was less crab and more puff. I also ordered the salmon roll, and spicy salmon and tuna roll. The sushi was descent. Everything totaled to a mere $ 23.77– so this place is excellent for a quick bite. If I was in the area around lunch time, and needed sushi really quick, I wouldn’t mind coming back– I suppose.

Cutting to the chase: GETTHEVOLCANOROLL! It’s a super saucy, delicious sushi roll that’s baked and drenched in sauce. Mmm. So this place is a pretty good go to when you’re craving sushi but don’t want to sit down and wait too long in a fancy sushi restaurant! I’ve come here twice now, once about 40 min before closing and second time at the beginning of happy hour. They’re really quick with getting their food out! Their happy hour deal is pretty awesome, especially their sashimi prices! One order has 3 pieces, and it’s only $ 6! We ordered the yellow tail, salmon, escolar, pepper tuna, and tamago. Their cuts are pretty big which is great! More for your money! But the thickness was also one of its downfalls because it was just too much in one bite… you can’t truly enjoy the taste and texture of the fish like you can in finer cuts. I’ve actually never seen such huge cuts of sashimi in my life… Their escolar was not as buttery as it usually is at other places though. But their pepper tuna was deliciouss… they did not skimp on the pepper! The entire side was covered in black flakes! So if you like peppery stuff, get it! Their chirashi I would not get again. Chirashi is a bunch of different sashimi on top of a bed of rice. I get chirashi at every sushi place I visit and their pieces tasted fishier than usual. Perhaps it was because I went close to closing and the fish was not as fresh? Not sure, but the pieces in this were also extra thick. Maybe I’ll have to try it again during a busier hour but I definitely was not impressed by their sashimi overall. Their volcano roll though was definitely impressive! It was soo good!!! I highly recommend it! Warning though: it comes out piping hot. Don’t burn your taste buds off eating it right away like I did. Give it a minute or two to cool! Also there’s a lot of sauce on this roll… It’s basically drenched so the flavor is unreal :) Going to ask for extra tempura to sprinkle on top next time since the tempura that comes with it gets soggy as you eat. Must preserve the crunch! This one is a must try if you go :).

Caution beware, this was absolutely the rudest managed sushi bar I’ve ever been in. Food was ok but the server is the worst I’ve ever had. Their attitudes anti American serious I’ve seen. I don’t know how they run a business. Warning stay away.

This is a great lunch spot. I went here around lunchtime today and man their service is fast. I ordered off the lunch menu and everything was out in under 10 mins. It could have been within 5?!? That was pretty shocking to me but this seems like a popular lunch spot so they know how to deal with whipping those specials out fast. I ordered the spicy salmon don– I’m pretty wimpy with spices but this wasn’t spicy at all. The salmon was fresh, the seaweed was delicious and the onions were a nice touch to the flavors. It came with a small miso soup. I also ordered a basic California handroll. The portions were smaller and I was seriously thinking about getting another roll, but the waitress came by with my check. Lol. It was probably for the best. I didn’t wanna have to pay for a separate roll or whatever so I just paid. Anyways for lunch I would definitely recommend this place, but definitely make sure you order more than you think you can eat. :P

Located in a strip mall next to the NRG Stadium is yet another favorite sushi place of mine in Houston. Inside the deceivingly generic strip-mall appearance holds the restaurant that is decorated like a modern sushi bar with a light touch of tradition and authenticity and an air of trendiness with pop music in the background. Asahi Sushi serves one of the best sushi in town by using nothing but the freshest ingredients along with an extensive selection of original sushi rolls to choose. To begin, Asahi is one of the few places in Houston that serves the Japanese appetizer, shiso hasami age($ 3 during HH). Dipped in mashed shrimp and mushroom, the shiso leaf is then deep fried in tempura batter. This unconventional snack is surprisingly light for a fried dish, and has a nice crunch from the leaf with a subtle taste of a shrimp tempura. Unless you have a high affinity to a certain appetizer or hates eating greens, shiso hasami age is my recommendation for a happy hour appetizer. Although my preference is nigiri over sushi roll, Asahi’s sushi roll selection was simply too alluring to miss. Along with the classic rolls like California and Tiger, Asahi also has many interestingly-named specialty rolls that have ingredient combinations that were equally intriguing as their names. Named after many U.S. locations including New York, Asahi specialty rolls apparently reflect the cultures of the locations using sushi ingredients. Perhaps the locals from those locations can tell me if Asahi does a good job with this, but all I know for sure that at least a roll was delicious whether it’s location-accurate or not! My choice was the New York roll($ 11.95), which came in eight pieces: A whole shrimp tempura is held within a roll that is topped with spicy salmon and yellowtail. The result was a delicious combination of the tempura crunchiness and the spicy fish tenderness, along with a symphony of spicy seafood tastes. Although this was one of the less adventurous rolls on the menu, the NY roll does its job well in delivering an Asahi-exclusive deliciousness. — BOTTOMLINE: Like a traditional Japanese restaurant, Asahi’s pricing is moderately high but come during weekday lunch or happy hour(4 – 9PM) for cheaper pricing. Happy hour menu includes $ 3 appetizers like shiso hasami age and $ 63-piece sashimi. Overall, I highly recommend Asahi Sushi as one of your sushi destinations in Houston especially if you are a huge fans of sushi rolls!

Happy Hour — appetizers for $ 3! We didn’t order any though. For once, a place in Houston where parking doesn’t seem to be an issue! Nemo Roll — I had to get it because of the name! You get the choice of tuna or salmon inside. Since it’s topped with salmon(hence the«Nemo»), I chose tuna to spice things up! The roll comes with 8 pieces, and was really delicious! I inhaled it quick and thought I needed more food, but surprisingly it was enough to fill me up. Dragon Roll — My sister needs tempura on her roll so she ordered this. The sauce of the roll made it really delicious! This roll doesn’t have any raw fish though, something that’s always a must if I order. On the plus side, there is a lot of crawfish as topping! Decent sushi, definitely will come back once I live here :).
