Very helpful — I called and asked about a foreign film and they grabbed it off the shelf and had it waiting for me right away! Awesome!

I just won the video sweepstakes at the store, a game that has been going on for too long for me to admit to, where I try and stump them three times in a row. Want to play, ask for a video tape that they have not got. No cheating and looking in the reference tome(big book, too heavy to steal). I knocked a star off because they now have someone working there who has not watched every tape, a seemingly impossible task, but often accomplished by young vampires with insomnia who get jobs in places like this. Should be 4.5 stars Quirky Houston at its best and because of that it will make my old time Houston list.

I love this place for it’s collection of quirky old VHS tapes you won’t see anywhere else. I’ve rented episodes of Mr Wizard and She-Ra here… pure retro fun. If you don’t have a VHS player(and truthfully, not many people do anymore) there won’t really be much for you here. They don’t rent out DVD’s and the few DVD’s they sell are prohibitively expensive. I sometimes wonder how this place stays in business. That being said this place has an AMAZING selection of foreign films that have not yet been converted to DVD. I’m talking Fellini and Kurosawa films that you can’t rent through Netflix because they are only on VHS at the moment. I’ve also rented some great old documentaries from here too. Audio Video Plus also has a Laserdisc room, which is probably cool for the five people in Houston who still have a laserdisc player, but I love how they cater older technology. It’s comforting for those of us who grew up on VHS and laserdiscs.

This place is nothing short of awesome. As soon as you walk in there is a sense of, «Okay, this is just awkward» as you and the video clerk make eye contact. There are old school puppets everywhere and the smell of ancient carpet meets 90s Microwave. We used to rent videos from here back when renting videos was the thing to do. Well not much has changed about this establishment except that half of their clientele now rents DVDs, they however… still rent Videos! Don’t come here expecting to get the newest releases or to see a large selection of DVDs. No this place my friends is for the VHS heads, or those that want to reminisce in the nostalgia of Video land. My favorite thing about Audio Video plus is that they have really old school rentals and things that I cherished from my childhood. Such as Jem and the Holograms, He-man & She-ra, Rainbow Brite, and Thundercats. But my second favorite thing about this place is that scattered in the most NON-obscure places is old porn! Someone obviously got confused when mixing the buns of steel exercise videos with the Honey Buns porn video. Really it makes me laugh. So if you are looking for something different to do, and a guaranteed laugh then go ahead and hit up Audio Video Plus. However if you don’t have a sense of humor and get offended easily then don’t leave the house.

With a better selection than most Hollywood and Blockbuster locations, but still not quite a Cactus replacement, Audio Video Plus is a reliable choice for your video rental needs. Things that I’m looking for are usually checked out(or they guys there hate me), but they offer a pretty good selection of foreign, indie, and plain old H-wood films. Prices can be a little high for the uninitiated. They also sell movies.
