I visited this place a couple days ago on the debut of their weekly poker night(every Tuesday at 7 and 9:30 – two tournaments respectively). Darwin’s Pub recently joined the ever-increasing list of venues to host weekly poker tournaments for the Snowman Poker League of Houston. I generally go to some of the places in the Clearlake area, as they are closer to where I live, but despite the distance, I actually prefer this place in some ways. For one thing, the clientele is younger, and the place itself is also cleaner than a few of the other bars and pubs I’ve been to for poker. The main downside to Darwin’s is the price of the draught beer(more than five dollars for most pours). I have yet to order any food here, but I’ve heard that it’s decent. I may come back and update this review once I’ve tried some.

I really liked this bar. Not sure why the bad reviews, I guess it appeals to a certain personality. Or maybe an older crowd? It was quiet and not too crowded. Came here Saturday night for Geeks who Drink. What I loved about it — you could hear your partner’s conversation and the trivia questions. It’s small area inside, you can participate inside or outside. Trivia starts at 7pm and we were able to park in the private lot attached. Dog friendly patio but it was raining and I’m not sure that they are allowed in the covered area. There’s pool, arcade games. Wasn’t crowded which I liked. There are board games available to borrow. They serve food from the restaurant next door and it was decent. It’s true, there was only one bartender but I never waited long for an order to be filled. Even their food was fairly quick. Good mixed drinks, Texas beer on tap and pretty wide selection of can/bottled beer. I’ll definitely be returning!

Darwin’s Pub is a fun and entertaining spot for hanging out with friends, or to make new ones. I like that it is a very chill spot. Because of location, Waugh at Washington, you will find people from every micro culture of Houston at Darwin’s Pub. They have an excellent menu, and an affordable drink menu, with special fun choices each night of the week. There are games, an amazing patio, and music two or three times a week. Geeks who Drink every Sat says alot about Darwin’s culture. It’s a pretty culturally diverse, and intelligent crowd. There are board games, and it’s dog friendly. The bartenders are awesome, and handle the bs with style and grace, to keep it great for everyone. The owner treats everyone as a VIP. Love Darwin’s Pub.

I absolutely LOVE this bar for the sole fact that they serve you 40’s of Colt 45 in a bag!

THIS place is HORRIBLE! The female bartenders were nice BUT the male(skinny and chubby) bartenders were very unprofessional, rude and not knowledgeable about any of the drinks they serve or sell. They still advertise that they have free crawfish but don’t really have any! It’s $ 2 tacos now! And it SUCKS! Beer Market one block down has $ 2 tacos and it’s awesome! Everyones order got mixed up! And the chubby male bartender only offered certain female tables drinks on the house, while everyone else was ignored. This place has really gone down hill since it was Addix.

Darwins was once my absolute favorite place to hang out because it’s so dog friendly and the food is decent. But the last month or so I’ve been going there it’s really gone downhill. Their stock of alcohol is severely lacking and sometimes they’re out the things I like to drink… They try to cover the absence of bottles of alcohol that were once displayed proudly with plastic figurines… It’s sad.

I was in the area a while back and heard about this spot. I strolled in with a buddy of mine looking for cool spots with arcade games other than Kung Fu Saloon. We happen to catch this place on one of their slowest nights. We got the chance to kick it with the bar staff and the owner/manager. Both of which were super nice and let us sample their brews on tap. It looks like a lot of love and heart went into the atmosphere of this place and I really enjoyed it. They said that they normally have live music and busier nights, but I didn’t hold it against them. I personally enjoy laid back bars that offer great atmosphere like this. They have a Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition Arcade machine here! Just wish it was on freeplay, but oh well. can’t have it all. I want to go back and check out their live music nights and crawfish. From what I could see, this makes a great place to enjoy good times with friends. Give them a shot. you may love it too.

Screw this place, drinks are to pricey, and the«marine» giving out crawfish is racist and has a bad attitude. He tried to fight me and some customers and called someone the n word. F this place

It was great when I got there on a Saturday evening. It was for a friend’s birthday party. It’s got a lot of space and there are arcade games along with two pool tables and a nice patio. Supposedly I heard that parking is hard to find if you go later, but I was lucky since I arrived early around 7pm. They have nice simple bar food and also a great drinks list as well as good selection of beers on tap. But I think it would be better if they had some more people working behind the bar counter, since there was only 1 person there when I ordered, and there was already a good crowd there. But I did notice that later on in the night, they had at least 2 people behind the bar counter, so maybe it was a rare thing.

If it weren’t for my friends birthday, I wouldn’t even be here. I don’t know why, but on a Saturday night for trivia, there was only ONE bartender. Not only was he serving drinks, but he was in charge of food as well. I waited almost 20 minutes to get a drink before I just gave up. I finally got a beer that was just completely flat. There was also a special for 5 dollar bush mills black, but the bar didn’t even have it. If you run a promotion, you’d better damn well have the stock. Staying for trivia is more of a chore than it is fun here. It’s difficult to hear what they’re saying, so most of the people wouldn’t get the question. The bar is also completely filthy. I put my elbow on the bar and now my jacket smells of something awful. Don’t bother coming here. You’ll only end up disappointed and frustrated.

One of my favorite spots: –Need theme. It’s no Neil’s…it’s definitely for the«cool» nerds but still cool. –Free tacos. They specials for free tacos on Wednesday(limit two) and I always tip of but more because they are amazing. –frozen trash can punch. Don’t expect craft cocktails here. Think of it as the bar you wish your small college town had. –Fried zucchini. Because everyone else has fried pickles. –Big dog friendly area. Including on that’s covered. Great for the heat. –It’s never packed. Ever. Not even on free nights. So, yeah that sucks for the owner I’m sure but it’s great for people like me who hate the packed bar feel of downtown and rice village. I hope they stay around for a long time. One of my mid week go-to spots.

This place has a nice ambiance, but I’ve been here several times and it was never full. I was easily one of the only people there after about an hour. Maybe I’m coming at the wrong times? Anyway, the owner/bartender is a nice dude and is a real geek as the bar is particularly known for. Unfortunately, the place still only gets three stars. I just don’t feel it’s up to par. And the toilets are always clogged.

Eccentric art, hilarious commentary written on the all chalk menu wall, colorful and comfortable patio furniture outside. Overall, great ambiance and a fun environment. While Darwin’s gives off the vibe of a hipster divey bar with the red solo cups, swear words incorporated in the art and the tattooed bartenders, it doesn’t have diver bar prices. No worries, the prices are reasonable and the drinks are good. I really liked sitting on the patio, they have two separate seating areas on the patio, one with roof cover and a second with umbrella cover at each table. AND you can check out games like Monopoly or Cards Against Humanity from the bar. THENITGETSBETTER, the patio is dog friendly!

This is a fun bar! The bar tender is super personable. I first ordered a creation a friend had suggested that used angostura bitters as the liquor — while skeptical he made it and even suggested more unique cocktails he had created. There are usually people hanging out but I have never seen it crowded which makes the atmosphere relaxed and the bar easy to enjoy.

Awesome place! Came here for a friends birthday and the bartender is the actual owner of the place and very knowledgeable about various drinks. Just let him know what flavors you have a taste for and he will mix up a pretty good drink for you. Very friendly and lots of art in the place. They also have games such as pictionary and jenga with pool tables in the patio with couches. Laid back place and owner was nice enough not to kick us out after 2am until he cleaned up and locked up the place.

This is a great addition to the Wash Ave area. This bar has a divey feel to it, but don’t let that scare you away. The owner was working the bar when I arrived around 6 pm. He was friendly and had no problem keeping up a convo with me while I waited for my coworkers to arrive. They have a decent draft selection and many beers in can. What makes this place so awesome is the environment. They have a cool lounge feel inside with several arcade games. On the covered patio they have nice seating and three pool tables. The outside patio has a great ambiance with many tables with tents. Since it was Wednesday, they had free crawfish. The crawfish were excellent — pretty spicy and cooked just right. The crowd was very chill, and this is a great spot to kick it with some friends, or even have an intimate night with someone. Definitely better than any spot I’ve been to on Wash Ave in the past few years.

Cool bar with AWESOME artwork by local street artist. Arcade games are fun but a little pricey at $ 1 per game. Good beer selection. Nice big patio. Dog friendly.

I think this is the 3rd or 4th time this place has changed names that I’ve known of so I was curious how things were different but it’s pretty much the same with the addition of a few video games and such. I guess it’s an ok bar with a nice clean interior but what I don’t get is the purgatory between the outside and the inside. What is that? It’s not really a patio because it’s walled in and just has one open wall to the outside so it’s more an extension of the inside but people were smoking there which I guess might be a loophole to get out of the anti-smoking ordinance. That’s not cool to me.

Finally! A watering hole on Washington Ave that isn’t too upper class or a club. There’s a huge chalkboard on the wall behind the bar listing all their drinks and specials. It’s nice to be able to see everything without standing on tip-toe or trying to see over someone’s head. There is a good selection of Texas beers. They seem to pride themselves on keeping the taps local. The bar staff is very friendly. They make sure to serve everyone, not just the people who are hitting on them. They make time to chat with anyone who’s interested, especially if it’s about their beverages. There are lots of cool arcade games including Skeeball, Street Fighter, and air hockey. Be warned: currently it’s $ 1 for one game of Skeeball. Proceed at your own risk. I’m not a huge fan of their outside area. The fluorescent lights are very off-putting, and they need to get some furniture that isn’t completely beat up. It’s strange because the inside is much better furnished.

A very weak two stars. I never went to Addix, but since this opened in the wake, I guess I will give it a try. I certainly hope Addix was not this pathetic. A patio out front with tables scattered about, past that is a semi enclosed outdoor area. Old, cracked couches that will melt themselves to your thigh in the heat. Tons of TV’s, some pool tables, other pub games and square bar outside, but was not in use when I visited. Inside becomes more dive like, and more in the contrived look at how cool we are. Not in the, we have been here forever and don’t care way. There is a huge difference. Which really, is only slightly annoying if I actually cared to visit this place again. They say they carry«all Karbach.» Well, they have Hopodillo and Hop Delusion on tap. I think Weisse Versa in cans, I did not see anything else(there could have been more). From what I saw, not exactly their entire lineup. Again, don’t care, at least they have Karbach. All tap beer is served in a red plastic solo cup. Which out right sucks. Personally I cannot stand that, all you taste is plastic with a little beer flavor. I guess that makes them cool. The hipster juice is Bud et al. Really? So let me get this straight… hipster beer was once PBR, then craft beer, now Bud? Apparently this is way to ironic for me to possibly grasp, let alone follow. Along with every ironic alcoholic drink you can think of, like Mad Dog and Thunderbird. These guys are trying way to hard. The website advertises a full food menu, but that is not the case at least on my visit. They have a steak and taco night. That is about it. Maybe they plan on actually having a kitchen, but nowhere is that apparent. You would think a new bar would want to explain their plan to a new costumer, but again, oh well. The bartenders don’t seem to care about anything. I guess I will be put on their«Wall of Shame» for this, which is fine by me. Oh, and if you are going to use a Darwin reference as the namesake, at least be original, like Down House. Oh hell, I changed my mind, Karbach be damned, this is a one star review.

Darwin’s Theory is a really great neighborhood bar and a great place to go if you’re not into the fratty-er scene in Midtown(or that is taking over part of Washington.) The giant patio is awesome(can’t wait to take advantage of it when it starts to cool down a little bit!) Inside, the wall opposite the bar is covered in some pretty cool street art and the giant«Viva la evolución» mural is a pretty awesome touch– overall, the décor/atmosphere gets my thumbs up. They’ve got an air hockey and foosball table, PacMan and are going to be adding more retro games to the bar– pretty cool! Additionally, the beer selection is pretty solid(a LOT of Texas brewed beer plus some other awesome breweries, like MAGICHAT… which is awesome!) and the drinks are cheap… AND they have food! I’m pretty excited about this place. I’m looking forward to expanding on this review as more time goes by.

Addix is now Darwin’s Theory. The remodel looks great. This is a fabulous building with an even better patio. The large main wall around the entrance has been hand painted«graffiti» style by 4 different artists. Other artwork hung throughout has a cool street style vibe as well. I am excited to see a more casual, local beer joint vibe to come into this space. They specialize in local beers and liquors, so they have a great selection of Karbach and all of the other local brews. They will soon be serving food(other than just Chatter’s), street tacos are rumored to appear on the menu. The place is also dog friendly. We chatted with on of the owners and he was super nice and you could see he was passionate about this new venture. I’m excited to come back with a group and check it out again.
