Hong Kong Family Market

It’s not a bad choice to shop for Asian food or general groceries. The quality is on par with its counterparts. Nothing that stands out as bad or good. The only bad experience that stood out is that you should beware of your car parking there. Heard stories of break-​ins when it gets dark. My personal experience was that I was sitting in the car in order to map out my next location, and one of the bag boys rammed a shopping cart to my passenger side. Instead of pushing the carts together orderly, they were pushing all carts freely to the same location before organizing so the carts also hit few of the other cars. Thinking no one was in the car, literally walked away and said nothing. I got out of the car to check the damage, still said nothing. Honestly if I wasn’t sitting in the car, I would not have known they did this because it just left a small scratch, as did the car it also hit.

This is my place for now to buy exotic fruit. But I have accidentally boughten bad precut dragon fruit and also not trying to be rude but I don’t think anyone speaks English and are unable to answer helpful questions. Also the security guard kept following me and my «ethnic» friend around and pressured us to leave the store at 9 although it stayed open till 9:30. Also half the store smells overwhelmingly like seafood. On the plus side they have amazing guava candy.

I like coming here because they keep it pretty clean and they usually have everything I need. Parking is much better than HK4.

I always visit this place after or before I visit iBubble. It’s very clean and spacious and the variety of snacks is great! I always try something new here without spending too much. If you’re looking for Pocky make sure you check at all the registers I’ve found a small variety of them such as coconut, almond, banana chocolate and a few more. They have kiosks in the front too and the makeup store is very convenient because I don’t always have time to drive to Chinatown or other places just for some BB cream or whatnot. A bonus is that it does not have that overpowering smell of fish like other Asian markets I have visited. Although some areas are lacking and need improvement there are other sections that make up for it.

Forget the name. well… sort of. Hong Kong, yes, they sell many Asian items and this is one of two places my daughter comes to get her Asian food items. A lot of various foods that you wouldn’t find in a regular store. BUT, they do have some products made here in the US and from Mexico.
The store is clean and everything is in place.
The store is HUGE! Many products to choose from. Fresh seafood too!
Staff is helpful and friendly, but you do have to find them if you need the help.
Otherwise, a good place to go and we will be back!

Great super market. Although this Asian store is an hour away from our house we still drive there. There isn’t that many Asian stores in our area so it was great when we found this one.

I posted a review a month ago, stating how this branch was doing better than Scarsdale. Did they switch employees? Today, I called (which I usually do, to reserve some uncut fresh pork leg and NO ONE understood English. Apparently, the manager, who was talking to me in English, (who happens to be Vietnamese) CANNOT translate! And to make matters worse they’ve got people in the meat department who ONLY speaks Vietnamese. I think its starting to be like a set-​up of the whole Scarsdale store! If this one goes South… customers will be limited.

This store is so much cleaner than the Scarsdale location! Too bad they don’t have as much selection as the other store but it’s okay. I went a little late and didn’t get to try the sandwiches but definitely will next time. Not a lot of bakery goods to choose from but they do have my favorite mung bean cake/​hopia. They have an enormous selection of fresh seafood and meat/​poultry and it doesn’t stink in there! Yay! They also have good selection of produce, Asian snacks and inexpensive kitchen items. I also like that there’s a couple of security guards inside and the parking lot-​makes me feel safe :) Will definitely be back soon!

My latest visit has now leaned me towards visiting this location more so than the Scarsdale. On different occasions, the men behind the seafood and meat department always have given the freshest product without me asking! Seriously, they could have given me that piece of salmon steak already cut and I wouldn’t have known any better. I needed 6 salmon steaks and he picked a whole salmon to cut up some new ones for me. Last time, I just needed about 1lb of eye round beef so I pointed to one piece that looked about right. The guy behind the counter suggested that’s not good because it’s not a bright red color and gave me another one. Of course I am wondering who will they sell those pieces too but at least it’s not to me lol. There’s never a wait to check-​out even on the weekends and the cashier ladies are always friendly to me. They don’t realize I’m Vietnamese and speak English to me :).

Kroger-​sized Oriental grocery with exotic Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Indonesian and Malaysian spices. Produce selection is great and the prices pretty reasonable. While a little more expensive than its Bellaire Blvd competitors in Chinatown, the location is very convenient for area residents.

Good place to go if you need asian ingredients. They have a lot of the same brands and variety as the other locations in Houston, just not as many different products/​variety but for a smaller location it will do.
It’s very clean. You do get hit with a bit of a fish smell when you first walk in but it goes away unlike the Scarsdale location where it follows you.
I shopped around. Produce was nice. Fresh, didn’t see any bad products sitting around. Though (again) the variety lacks. There were about 10 types of bok choy and one type of lettuce. I did buy some bok choy as the kind my fiancé likes was on super cheap sale.
The fish area looked good. Clean. Didn’t see any floaters in the tanks and they weren’t over crowded with fish like the others. Had a wide selection.
The middle of the store was decent. What you would expect from an Asian market. Ok selection of choices for various products from a few countries (soy sauce, noodles, tea etc.)
The meat area lacked a bit. Very few cuts of meat and not even much of the common «asian cuts» were available. May have been due to the time I went, everything may have been bought up. (4p.m. on a Saturday)
Bakery area is pretty much nonexistent. Sad to say.
My cashier was probably about my age or younger. She spoke English. I was greeted, given a total and thanked politely.
Overall it’s a good place if you live in the clear lake area to go if you need an Asian specialty item, but nothing TOO specific. Keep in mind its mainly Chinese and Vietnamese products so it lacks a bit of ethnic variety. I’ve been spoiled by HMart (I do shop mainly for Korean ingredients though) and will probably continue to shop there for the majority of my Asian groceries but its convenient enough if I need something I forgot.

It’s a month old grand opening of a new supermarket. I’m glad it’s conveniently located on the south side of town. The produce department is fresh and they have a wider selection of snacks. The meat and fish department is also fresh. The location is clean and well maintained. Prices are great too.

Woohoo! New supermarket full of goodies– the place is spacious and clean, and there are a handful of restaurants to eat at in the same plaza before or after your shopping trip.
The seafood selection is nice, and the fishmongers provide super friendly service. There’s also a section labeled «bakery,» but for now, don’t be fooled; no freshly baked bread here, but there are pre-​packed lunches, some sweet buns from outside, and refrigerated cakes. The selection in the snack aisles seems big, but the way they stock the shelves is a bit offsetting. Instead of piling the packages from back to front so you can see the brand and product information, they’re piled upwards, so you have to pull out each bag to see what it is. I’m too lazyyyyy XD
Okay, so why the measly 2 stars? The produce quality! I’ve got a major sweet tooth and love my fruit (more than chips and salty snacks!), and I stocked up on plums, grapes, cherries, and a watermelon. The plums came in a tray with plastic wrap, and when I bit into the first one, the plum tasted like nothing. Neither sweet nor sour (if they have gone bad), literally like nothing. So I tossed it and bit into another one. Same! In the end, I ended up with ten plums that looked like they got attacked by some rabid bunny and a very unsatisfied me :(The grapes were squishy and not firm, and when I was eating the cherries, an occasional cherry would taste great and my taste buds went «Yay!» And then I’d have to eat my way through twelve more cherries before my taste buds started cheering again. And lastly, the watermelon. It was labelled «seedless,» but there were definitely seeds. Not the tiny ones, but the black ones~ The flesh also wasn’t sweet at all. Such a bummer~ Unilocal says 3 stars is «A-​OK,» and sad fruit is *not* A-​OK, noooooo D: haha~
Until this location steps it up in their produce department, I’m going to stick to their Scarsdale location. Yeah, Scarsdale might be smaller, more crowded, and a bit older, but at least I won’t be throwing away all the fruit I buy!

This grocery store is very big, bright, and clean. The lobby has several under-​contruction kiosks with a variety of small businesses handing out coupons. The new makeup store Lioelle has some amazing BB cream. The place is huge, but I mostly come here for the snack aisle, since everything is so inexpensive and delicious. Tiramisu wafer sticks, Hello Kitty strawberry cookies, coconut wafers, crème-​filled biscuits in an adorable koala bear box. I’ll buy a few things, and I’ve never paid more than $ 5 at a time. I love anything coconut, and this is a standard flavor here. I’m telling you, head for the snack aisle and you’ll never want Chips Ahoy again.
They have a decent selection of fresh produce, but the avocados are refrigerated to the point where they all stay very ripe. You have to really look to find one that’s ready to eat. Also, the bakery has very very few baked goods. Just some bread and rice cake desserts available. There is a large selection of inexpensive kitchenware, and I got a very sharp KIWI knife for only $ 2 and some pretty chopsticks. I’ll have to come back next time I’m in the Hobby area.

With the opening of this new location, the owners of the Hong Kong Market at nearby Scarsdale should shutter their store.
This one has all of the variety and ingredients you need for almost any type of Asian food but without the filth and rot at Scarsdale. (Never used the restroom there? Imagine the scene from Trainspotting where Ewan MacGregor crawls into the toilet. Or maybe the main character from Slum Dog MIllionaire diving feet first into an outdoor toilet. Yes, that bad.)
Newcomers to the Houston market like 99 Ranch and H Mart hopefully have spurred older stores to add kiosks, clean restrooms and show like they actually care. Yes, imagine that — customer service.
At the grand opening today, an English-​speaking couple was approached by a manager. One of the workers was unable to understand the Caucasian man or his Korean wife but got a manager to intervene.
At the Scarsdale store, a situation like that would have resulted in a manager just walking away.
The extra 10 minutes of driving from Clear Lake and bypassing Scarsdale makes a world of difference.
