After getting pleasantly surprised from my visit to a nearby doughnut shop, Deluxe donuts, I decided to give another mom and pop donut shop a visit. Mr. K Donuts and Kolaches is located in the corner of W. Little York and Brittmoore right across from the Chevron gas station, in the same little shopping center where you can find a hair salon and a take out Chinese restaurants. This place looks a little bit more run down than Deluxe donuts but I was hoping that I would find a little hole in the wall gem. I went inside the store and noticed that there were only three tables available for dining in if you choose. Two tables for four and one table for two. All the tables were used. One table was being used by the owner and her friends. One table was being used by the workers’ kids, and the last table was being used for a placeholder for all of their belongings. As soon as I walked in the door, the owner(who’s Asian — what’s with all the Asians opening donut shops in this side of town?) greeted me. I proceeded to order a Kolache, a taco, and a couple of donuts. The breakfast taco I wanted, Egg and bacon, was out because they didn’t have any bacon left. So I got egg and sausage taco, sausage kolache, a glazed donut and a sugar donut. All of this for $ 5 and change. Not too bad. Out of the four items I ordered, the most satisfying one was the kolache. It was pretty good even though I thought it could use a little bit more cheese. The taco was pretty bland. Not enough cheese and not enough sausage. Although it was pretty big. The donuts, surprisingly, were pretty good. But I was disappointed that they didn’t give me fresh ones. They just gave me the donuts from the display, and who knows how long they had been sitting in the display. Just FYI, I microwaved the donuts for 10 seconds before eating them and they were good when warm. Between this place and Deluxe donuts, I’d probably be going to Deluxe more even though this location is a lot more convenient for me.
