I was attracted by the delicious baking aromas while driving by one summer day few years ago. I felt in love with their freshly brewed canela coffee, authentic breads and fanciful cakes. It’s so convenient for me, just right before I enter Beltway 8. I could just get some quick bites before going to work or bring some to share. I always felt welcomed by the staff & customers. They don’t treat me like someone doesn’t appear to speak Spanish.

So excited that I found a cheaper & more delicious bakery than the ones I frequent in Chinatown! Woohoo! My friend recommended this place & it is located near Chinatown at Beechnut & Beltway 8. So I stopped by there after dim sum on a Saturday since I was in the area. My friend warned me that the employees here don’t speak English & they don’t label any of the baked goods that are displayed. But she assured me that everything that she have tried there was delicious & I couldn’t get it wrong. I like fruit-filled pastries and used the little Spanish that I knew to ask a lady there to point me in the right direction. So I got some guava, apple & pineapple filled pastries. All were simply delicious! I also picked up some cheesecake & cookies. Thinking that I might have overspent a little in this bakery, I went to check out & was told my total came out to only $ 4.80! OMG, I felt like I just robbed the place! Definitely coming back for more soon!

I dream about this place. We make an almost-weekly trip out here on Sunday mornings to load up on seriously delicious, seriously dirt-cheap authentic Mexican pastries and bread. Anything warm is fresh out of the oven and, as a general rule, to die for. But really, everything I’ve had here has been amazing. They have large metal trays and sets of tongs by the door. Grab some when you walk in and pile up anything that looks remotely appetizing. If you know a little Spanish(and even if you don’t), they are incredibly nice and will make recommendations and help explain what’s what(since there aren’t really signs). They also make some pretty fancy-looking birthday cakes, which I have not yet tried, but I have a standing promise to the bf that he’ll be getting one when the time comes.

4 stars for the pastries and their prices. 2 stars for the service. This place draws a wide array of folks. Some are in BMW’s, others are dirt poor. The lower income Hispanic guys that eat here come for the bolio bread. It’s very tasty, and very filling(it’s bread) and very cheap. But right behind the three construction workers waiting for their dinner you’ll see a girl with a Gucci bag. Here’s how it works: You walk in, grab a tray and a set of tongs, and get at it. There’s a lot of different pastries to choose from; and none have names or prices on them. I usually don’t deduct a star for 3rd World service in joints like this but I had to ask for help twice from one of the girls before she finally came over and pointed out what I was looking for. But the pastries are great! And DIRTCHEAP. The added bonus is the tamale lady outside selling GRANDE tamales for $ 1. You can choose from pork, chicken, or jalapeño cheese. The also have some pretty wild looking pinatas if you’re into that. This spot is definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area.
