Their food isn’t what it used to be. My family and I have been regular customers for over 29 years! Ever since the old owners Linda and her husband sold it everything is not the same. Well I take that back the eggrolls are still yummy! Linda who was the previous owner works there part time and she is awesome. She still remembers our orders and how we want it. Just wish the food still the same

Wow! The curry beef is actually really good! This place is a hole in the wall! The only minus is, it has a smell and the bathroom is a little on the nasty side.

First the good: This place has been around FOREVER and the food has generally been Fan-frickin’tastic throughout their history. They are definitely not like those restaurants you find that seem to be afraid of using any types of seasonings or spices. The food is TASTY and quite honestly, some verge on DELICIOUS and the portions are pretty okay. Now the not so great. The prices are a little on the high side I think in comparison to other Chinese restaurants in the area, so I mostly disagree with the one«$» rating. We once found a hair(several years ago) in the garlic chicken and at the time the owners/people running it seemed pretty dang up there in years, so we stopped going for a bit(sorry if that sounds bad :)). In the recent past we have picked up a couple of dishes from them and they are still really good. My suggestion is you definitely visit them at least once.

The good: First off the food is decent. I wouldn’t go out of my way for it. Good prices. The bad: They opened for lunch 15 minutes late. I don’t think the A.C. works as there is an industrial fan in the main dining room. We got our drinks after sitting for 15 minutes. After eating it took another 20 to get the food. Then another 10 after we ate to get to go boxes. Still waiting for the check :( Overall, probably won’t be back again.

I first started coming to Tung Hoi in ’94. Back in the day we were here almost weekly, but sadly it’s not really close anymore. We always had their sweet and sour chicken, and as cliché as that sounds they really do a great job of it. Their lunch specials come with soup, and today they gave me wonton. That really is sad because the hot sour soup is really good. To be honest I didn’t think hot and sour could be good until I tired it here. But the real reason you need to drive a few miles out of your way to eat here is the egg rolls. They really are that good. I knew they made the best egg rolls in town even though I hadn’t eaten here in nearly 10 years. But today’s trip just confirmed it. The food is still made the same way, and the egg rolls are still the best.

Love this place and have been eating here for as long as I can remember. The place isn’t the fanciest place in the world but it is cozy and quiet. The egg drop, chicken wings, sweet and sour chicken, and fried rice with beans sprouts are my favorite.

This is by far my favorite restaurant on the North side. Linda and Wayne, the owners, have been always make me feel welcome and the food is always spectacular. My favorite items are the won ton soup and the crab puffs. If you go with a group, be sure to order the family dinners, they are the best deal by far. This food is so good, I have driven almost two hours on numerous occasions just to eat there. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed.

I’ve grown up eating @ Tung Hoi so I may be a little biased! But the food here is phenomenal! Their lunch specials are very reasonable for the amount of food you get! I’ve even created my own dish out of the special noodles! Just add BBQ pork & make it spicy… and they will know what you’re talking about! It’s enough for 2 people!

For all of those who NEVER had a clue!!! Mrs. Linda is the owner of the WONDERFUL little known gem of a restaurant. It is named for her home town of Tung Hoi Vietnam. It opened in 1983 or 1984 and I learned to eat with chopsticks here when I was VERY young. She has watched me and now my family grow up since they opened their doors. To this day ALL other Chinese food is compared to hers and NONE have even come close. The food is FRESH and authentic. Mrs. Linda learns the regular customer’s names and favorite dishes. She is quick, courteous, and the protions are fabulous. The restaurant is small and the interior is exactly as it was when it opened, but the service and food quality have NEVERFALTERED. If you are passing through this rougher end of Bammel North Houston PLEASE take the opportunity to treat yourself to a fine meal and great customer service despite the looks of the place. It will not let you down and you too will have a tough time finding Chinese food anywhere else that satisfies this well. Sincerely, Melissa K. Houston, TX

Tung Hoi is a little strip center Chinese restaurant of the sort you might find in Diho Square on Bellaire, and working on the north side of town, I was glad to find one of the $ 5 lunch special varieties(though drifting toward $ 6.50 these days). They have a number of specialties and«chef’s masterpieces» for around $ 12 and up that might be good if you were stopping by for dinner. On a weekday lunch however, I went for an old standard, the General Tso’s(or Tao’s, as they call it) Chicken. I started off with a hot and sour soup, which I immediately noticed was different than what you’ll find at virtually any other Chinese restaurant. Large chunks of green pepper were surprising, along with julienned carrots, scallions, and tofu in a curious broth. It had a nice kick of spice at the back of my throat, but it had an overall aroma and taste as though all the vegetables had been pickled, like the little bowls of carrots, onions, and jalapeños you sometimes get at Mexican restaurants with your chips. I ultimately found it unappetizing, and didn’t finish it. When the main dish came out, we were back to normal. The sizable chunks of white meat chicken were rather dry, but the thick, dark sauce in which it was doused helped, and was delicious. Surprisingly, it was really the accompanying fried rice and eggroll that were the stars. Good sized bits of pork were immediately visible in the browned rice with egg, and the eggroll was huge, a dark golden brown, and filled with bold green vegetables. With a touch of General Tao’s sauce, soy, or spicy mustard, the eggroll made a nice cap to the meal. Whenever you see hosts on the Food or Travel channels visit Chinese restaurants, whether in Beijing or their backyard, when they really get talking with the proprietors, they end up sampling some exquisitely authentic fare. As you enter Tung Hoi and notice the wood paneled walls, the Chinese light fixtures, the small section in the back littered with boxes and a table covered in receipts and a little calculator on which you know the kindly old mom and pop proprietors do their accounting, all typical of a proper Chinese establishment, you realize this may well be one of those gems the surface of which has only been scratched. I look forward to further investigations.

It’s not often that I would find a place to eat and have complete trust that the food will be good especially when you’re in an unfamiliar city. Tung Hoi was at a good place at a good time. My sister, a friend, and I(after many«not it» games) finally decided to take a risk in eating at this little hole in the wall restaurant. Out of all the surrounding fast food places, this little Chinese restaurant beat out all the others in giving a good hearty meal late night.(they close at 11 on Fridays) Funny how we actually Unilocaled the restaurant and found that there was zero results for it and later when entering the restaurant and seeing noone there gave us further doubt to the restaurant’s credibility. Nevertheless we were seated and ordered. Prices — Affordable: Dinner entrees range from $ 8.97 to $ 15 and the servings are pretty good. Three entrees were enough to feed three people and still have leftovers. Our bill was $ 31.01 all together Taste — Excellent: Each entrée we tried provided a different flavor. LOOKATMYPICTURES — don’t they make you hungry? =) Service — It wasn’t bad(seeing as there was no one else there) but the lady still came and gave us water and refilled our rice when asked Don’t overlook this place — it’s worth every dollar. And it satisfies the stomach.

My friends and I were coming into Houston for a football tournament and were famished and in need of carbs before our game the next day. We figured that all the decent places to eat were probably downtown/near th galleria area and were the places that were open at the time(9:00pm) were either fast food places or non-existent. My friend who was driving just saw the name of the place and started to crave Chinese food. So we pulled in front of the restaurant trying to decide if wanted to risk spending money here for food. The place was opened until 11pm… but there was ABSOLUTELY no one in the restaurant. The place was GHETTO looking and the décor and overall ambiance was very shabby and bleak. The place isn’t very large and you could tell that it was kind of old. Anyway, we were so hungry we thought it was better than nothing and proceeded to order. The lady who served us was an elderly Cantonese womyn who did her best to make us feel welcome. She told us we could sit anywhere and followed us with menus. She brought out our drinks very quickly and gave us time to order. Our dishes were pepper steak, sweet and sour delight, and the tripple happiness. All served with steamed rice. We waited no longer than 8−10minutes before all of our dishes were served. Everything smelt and looked incredibly delicious. We each killed more than half of our plates and still had enough to take home that could feed 1 – 2 people in another meal. Prices were reasonable for the portions served and the service was friendly. Definitely a whole-in-the-wall for nighttime bite. The food wasn’t to-die-for but for the area, it was good and it satisfied our cravings and quenched our thirst and hunger.
