My hosts in Huntsville chose this place for breakfast, and my husband and I liked it so much we went back the next day on our own. If you like local eateries, this is a genuine one. The biscuits are good, and this place knows how to do grits. My husband ordered a waffle, which was made up fresh. I am giving it 3 stars only because they allow smoking in another section that is separated by a wide doorway, and a bit of the smoke still comes over, which left us smelling a little smoky. But the staff were nice.

The food was just okay and small portions. My bacon was almost burned but I ate it since I do like my bacon crispy. The booth was also very wobbly. In addition, our waitress didn’t come by much to check on us. Also, there’s a smoking and non smoking areas but they’re not really separated except by an open door way that defeats the purpose of me not wanting to smell cigarette smoke while I’m eating my breakfast.

This place is cute and in a great location! I’ve never had cigarette smoke flavored pancakes until I came here. The entire place smells like a smokers paradise. The food that isn’t filled with lung cancer is mediocre at best, and the wait staff ignores you.

How can you mess up a good Texan breakfast? Perfect over easy eggs, crispy hash browns and bacon, good coffee brought to you by a waitress that calls you and your wife«hon. «all for less than $ 20 and a great view of the courthouse square. This is Texas at it’s best.

This place is so cute! I wish it was still open 24 hours like it used to be. Their french toast is amazing

The food was good, but pretty greasy. Luckily, it was pretty slow in there that night, otherwise I’m pretty sure that we would have been smoked out from the smoking section. The ham that I got with my meal was more like Spam or salted pork. We will probably go back again, but what I am really looking forward to trying is their biscuits and gravy. I just have to make sure to get in their early enough.

Don’t waste your time or money. The food was out of boxes, gravy from an envelope and no one seemed to care that flies were buzzing us. They have a section for smokers and non-smokers with no door to separate. We were in Huntsville to visit the Sam Houston Museum and visit the downtown area,(old town charms), but will not return to this café when we visit again.

Before leaving Huntsville, TX, I had to stop by Café Texan to see my friend/owner John Strickland and have a breakfast that would help heal the wounds that were inflicted the night before. I had my usual grits, scrambled eggs, whole wheat toast and a chicken fried steak and coffee. Café Texan is a venue that one must go to at least once for the nostalgia of the days of old. Great friendly service and food.

I was not impressed at all. I had the French toast with eggs, hash browns, sausage and bacon, my boyfriend had the same except he had pancakes. My French toast tasted like eggy bread but he liked it, his pancakes were very fluffy though. The sausage was very good and the bacon was good, except we had two pieces that were severely under cooked! Our waitress was very busy, too busy to really wait on us. I’d say it wasn’t bad, but the atmosphere was dull, the food was generally bland, nothing to bring us back.

Whenever I’m out traveling about I like to dine in establishments that are unique to the town/city/village that I am in. Hence my reason for stopping in here. Other Unilocalers have already touched on the smoking. Yeah that was a serious deal breaker. We immediately started to turn and walk out, but, I was HANGRY! I made us stay and go for it. There were three other customers in there, so, I thought that isolating ourselves from the others by eating in the«Non-Smoking» room would be tolerable. Not so. Smoke was everywhere. My eyes started burning and the smell was nauseating to say the least. Breakfast served all day is awesome, but, I needed something more. We both did burgers and fries. It took a good 15 minutes to get the food out to us. During this time I noticed our waitress preferred her regulars over the out of towners. Once our food was placed in the window she ignored it and continued her conversation with a customer. She took a good three minutes to grab the plates and bring them to our table. She was nice, but, needs to brush up on multi-tasking. The fries tasted stale. Not sure how that happens. Maybe they were double fried. At least they weren’t soggy and limp. Moo-moo MEH on the fries. My cheeseburger was a double with mustard and veggies. Surprisingly it wasn’t that bad. The patties were pushing the limits with over fried, but, the grease was controlled. The bun held up, but, had waaaay to much butter. Nice crisp grill, but, the salty butter taste didn’t do it for me. If you like that, then this is a burger for you. Another thing to note was the onion. I was pleased they didn’t serve it with diced. Having said that, they served it with ringlets. Just give me the whole slice people. I like onion. Onion likes burgers. Go ahead, slice it and serve it. Would I ever go back here? Most likely no. Only because of the smoke. The separate non-smoking room was ill thought. A door between the two rooms would really be helpful. Coupled with some ventilation, they might be on to something. In the mean time leave the smoking outside. Cough! Cough! Ain’t nobody got no time for second hand smoke!

I think ownership must have changed. The place reeks of cigarettes and the floor does not appear to be mopped. I sat and waited an unreasonable amount of time without being served -‘while the family wearing Duck Dynasty garb, that came in after me, we promptly served. I left and won’t return.

08/02/2014 Been a while so I thought it’d be a good idea to try this place out again. It is a more intimate environment than IHOP or other breakfast places in town. Now with wifi

My friend and I had breakfast here this morning, and it just wasn’t a pleasant experience. When we first walked in, it took the entire staff several minutes to even notice us. No one smiled, we weren’t greeted, and we didn’t get any sort of «We’ll be right with you!». That should have been our first clue, but it’s Sunday in Huntsville and the options are limited. We were hungry and in need of coffee, so we stayed. Finally we got tired of standing around waiting to be noticed, so we just headed over to the seat yourself counter service part of the restaurant and plopped down. We waited at least 5 minutes before a waitress even approached us for our drink order, and then another several minutes before she actually delivered the drinks. The cleanliness of my coffee mug was pretty questionable, but I kept quiet for fear of not knowing how long it would take to get my caffeine back if I had her swap out my mug. While we waited for our waitress to come back to take our order, we hear a group of the wait staff talking about how busy they were. My friend and I, who actually met waiting tables in college, looked around the restaurant and just giggled to each other because there were empty tables and weren’t on a wait. But whatever, everyone handles stress differently. Our waitress finally showed up to take our order. She was nice enough and even topped off my black coffee without me having to ask. We then placed our order and then waited for what seemed like forever. While we waited, the wait staff proceeded to loudly discuss how busy they were to the point it made us feel guilty for even being there in the first place. They ran out of biscuits, were almost out of hashbrowns, and were about as worried about their egg supply as a single thirty-something female. All reasonable things to stress over… in the back of the house, away from paying customers. Some more time passes. And then some more. I look at my Unilocal check-in for a time reference to find out we’d been there for well over an hour. Well over an hour, and we still hadn’t received our eggs, bacon, and pancakes. Food that takes literally seconds to prepare. We started looking around for our waitress as to just cancel our order and were already discussing other food establishment options, but no one was paying any attention whatsoever. My friend and I then notice there’s a bunch of food stacked up in the window ready to be delivered to tables and hoped it could be ours, so we decided to wait a little longer. We waited several minutes longer before our waitress picked up our plates and headed over. For how hungry we were at this point, the food should have been out of this world delicious by default. Nope. Egg wasn’t cooked right. Hashbrowns were cold(I suppose I should be thankful I got any at all though since there was a severe shortage), and the bacon was very cardboard-esque. Oh, and there was a hair stuck to the top of the syrup dispenser. They did have Cholula though, and for that reason, I’m giving a second star!

They close at 2pm on Sundays and it was already 1:45pm but they let us in and were genuinely happy to serve us and wait until we had eaten and finished which was past 2pm. Granted there were other patrons finishing off their dining during this time also but for that kind of service I am happy to give 4 stars. As for the food it was very much your home cooking affair and the lower than average prices reflects the smaller portions(which is enough as I think most restaurants always charge and serve too much food anyways).

We went there for breakfast and it was the most god awful experience I’ve ever had. The French toast had the texture of a kitchen sponge, served with no butter, cinnamon or powdered sugar. If it had had no taste, it would have been an improvement. I’ve made better French toast drunk… I’m not even being sarcastic. My husband had the big breakfast, everything on his plate was burnt. The sausage was so burnt he had to use his camping knife to cut it, the bacon was leathery, his hash browns were black, the eggs managed to be both runny and burned. We bought the pancakes home to give to the dog and he rejected them. The wait staff were terrible. We asked for extra napkins four times and never got them. The waitress spent the entire meal stopping to talk to every old white couple but then she would literally throw our condiments and plates on the table before walking away. If Huntsville were taken over by zombies and this was the last safe place, I’d let myself get bitten then walk in.

This place is drab and filled with cigarette smoke. Also, when I was there, for Sunday breakfast, they ran out of eggs. Also, the pancakes were horrendous. On the plus side, it did have local charm — not a chain. It also had a lot of character.

When you walk into café Texan you are welcomed by some old history followed by what looks to be dusty dirtyness. Painting look like food has been splatted all over. So cleanliness rating is a 2⁄10 Ordered the breakfast sampler and the chicken fried steak n eggs. None of which deserved a photo. Not too bad if you’re hungry and have no other choice. Biscuits were stale and we choked a few times. The white gravy on the steak could have been better(fresh?) the hash browns were probably the best thing we ate. Overall it’s not a bad little eat just not what we wanted

It was the«home style» country food one would expect in an small town restaurant. I had the lunch special of chicken and dumplings. It was decent, but not amazing. The place has a lot of character. It’s worth checking out, but I don’t see myself becoming a regular.

The Café Texan is a great little restaurant on the square in Huntsville. Offering all day breakfast and great prices it’s a great place to stop at if you’re hungry. I was on a hunting trip with friends and after staying at the Sam Houston University Hotel we stopped by at 10am for breakfast. There was only one waitress working the entire non-smoking section but she managed to keep up with us reasonably well. I know how stressful that job can be and am not going to blame her for any slowness of our meals. The menu says their omelettes are made from 3 eggs but mine seemed much bigger. I had the bacon(of course) and cheese and it was quite filling. There is a plethora of condiment containers on each table to satisfy your butter, jelly, creamer, hot sauce, and pepper needs. And the prices here are just awesome! You can eat breakfast for less than $ 5! One drawback would be the restaurant still allows smoking indoors and while a non-smoking section is available it isn’t sealed off leading to me invariably getting a whiff of unrequited nicotine with my meal. If you need your nicotine fix without actually smoking though(Mrs. Doubtfire anyone?) then you’ll be right at home.

Charm-ing! Guy Fieri, GETHERE! This is a great spot for Triple D… breakfast served all day — amazing lunch specials, chicken fried steak as big as your head — and a go get em waitress that didn’t slow down the entire time we were there. Plus, all kinds of history all over the walls. Oh, and as the sign says over the door, don’t spit on the sidewalk.
