I loved garage sale-ing with my grandma when I was a kid, so these discount stores are just like a trip down memory lane. Except now I’m looking at a lot more home furnishings and a lot less jars of beads and buttons. You never know what you’ll find here, and as I was reminded recently, if you see something and are debating about it: just buy it. Return it if you have to, but buy it. Or some other person with fabulous taste will surely find your treasure and take it back to their digs. And then where will you be? Right? Every week there is a new adventure. Glad we have a few to choose from in Indy.

Cheap people everywhere unite in praise of TJ Maxx! I feel torn on this review, because there’s a lot I love about TJ Maxx, and a lot that I hate. So, first the good: they sell items with barely noticeable defects, or sometimes perfectly good items that just happened to be in overstock at other stores, for a deeply discounted price. This concept is amazingly awesome, especially given the American propensity to waste, which I will not philosophize about at this time. Anyway, I love the idea of this store. And I absolutely love shopping in the kitchen and housewares section. You can really find some great stuff here for very cheap. What I don’t like: the clothes. For men, they’re fine, because let’s face it: men’s clothes are inherently pretty boring. Most of the men I know just want a few staple sweaters in basic colors to get them through the season. Hell, most of the men I know don’t even think that in depth about it. They usually just grab a pack of shirts and call it a day. For women, though, the process is often a little different. I love clothes, and I love good prices. I don’t, however, love to sift through a ton of crappy clothes to marry the two, which is what you have to do here. I don’t like the vast majority of their women’s clothes at all, and I don’t have the patience to rifle through. If you do, you might be able to find good bargains. Finally, but importantly, they usually play terrible music. Not cool.
