Great cupcakes! Lots of varieties and flavors, they’re also expanding into other items — other than cupcakes which are good too. Friendly staff.

Words will never express how I feel about their cupcakes… they are so incredibly delicious that I consider it such an honor and spiritual experience every time I take a bite out of their red velvet cupcakes (I may have cried once because they were so good — I’m not joking). If you seriously love cupcakes and cool people, this cupcake shop/​art gallery is awesome. There is yet a place I have tried to beat Monumental Cupcakes at any level… and I doubt there will be anytime soon.

Simple and perfect are the first two words that come to mind when I think of Monumental Cupcakes. Their speciality is — gasp!- cupcakes, but the real treat is apple cider donuts. The donuts are baked, not fried, with a healthy but not overwhelming layer of frosting. Some have brown sugar sprinkled on top. Sure, there’s coffee, and yes, there are usually some interesting lunch items on the weekends, but the donuts are where it’s at. Affordable — $ 2 each — and delicious, without the long lines and rows of obnoxious stroller suckers that populate Fiore’s across the street. End note: the cupcakes rock, too.

Stopped by on a Thursday around 3pm — limited selection of about 5 flavors of cupcake. I got a couple vanilla (dry) and a chocolate caramel (tasty, and really dry). Not sure it’s worth the $$ per item, but with others writing rave cupcake reviews, I’m bound to be back for another try.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience here and see it as a mixed blessing that it’s so close by my home (goodbye skinny jeans!). I was brought to this place after my friend told me about her experience. Apparently she was running late jogging and the store was supposed to close so she stopped in on her way out and asked her options. The lady was so nice that she said she’d be happy to stay open and wait for her. And lo and behold, after her run she showed up and they were still open! A box of cupcakes at the ready. Now that’s community kindness!
Now for MY experience. While a rather small shop, it’s cozy and offers places for you to sip on your coffee as you have your cupcake. All the cupcakes looked delicious but I finally decided on the red velvet as I can’t resist ANYTHING red velvet. It was an excellent choice. Not overly sweet with wonderful cream cheese flavor that was addicting and left me wanting another.

This place is amazeballs! They have the most scrumptious cupcakes ever. In fact, I think I am only invited to dinner parties at this point because of the cupcakes I bring. I also tried a veggie turnover there that was to die for. Oh, and they’re very friendly which is a bonus too!

Ill just say i can only imagine these people have not watched Clerks, or it would have dawned on them no one can be better then Dante and Randall. My goodness, JP full power, so early in the morning, who can be ready for this? Better to stay at home with this kind of attitude.
I know — They’re not even supposed to be here today!

Let me start by saying: I am deeply suspicious of reviews that begin by touting the reviewer’s own expertise in the subject. All too often, «this croissant was terrible, and I should know because I am an expert in croissant-​ery» turns out to mean «I once had a connecting flight through Charles De Gaulle Airport, and ate a pastry there.» Which is why I want to establish my bona fides before I talk shop. I am a man who enjoys his cupcakes. I have dabbled in the fine art of miniature cakes. I can talk to you about the relative merits of buttermilk vs. regular milk as liquid binder. I have started fights when someone brought a box of cake mix into my house. I have Strong Opinions about cake flavors. (I’m looking at you, red velvet cake, AKA chocolate cake for people who hate chocolate cake but love unnatural shades of crimson) You want to know the difference between varieties of vanilla beans, and their impact vis a vis cake versus frosting flavor? I’m your guy. Do you want some vanilla beans? I’m also your guy, because one time in a piqué of rage about grocery store vanilla bean prices, I bought half a pound of them on the internet, and it turns out half a pound is hundreds of vanilla beans, and even though they’re triple-​bagged, the smell permeates the house and confuses the cat.
Anyway. All of this to say: I am not your average yokel off the street, when it comes to cupcakes. And Monumental Cupcakes makes the best damned cupcake I have ever had from a commercial establishment. Vanilla, chocolate, lemon, peanut butter, wacky flavor of the day – you can’t go wrong here. There is a razor-​thin margin between «dry and cakey» and «fudgy and sticky,» and cupcakes are especially prone to falling off into one abyss or the other. Monumental’s cupcakes are the rare bird that get it exactly right. They need not rely, as so many horrible cupcakes do, on icing covering up overly dry or undersweetened cake. The icing is a lovely buttercream, which can stand on its own (as my 2-​year-​old daughter will attest, face happily smeared with a thin patina of chocolate) but works in glorious harmony with the cake.
As an added bonus, they started serving coffee at breakfast time recently, and it turns out that they make the finest cup of iced joe in town. I apparently need to start buying my beans from here, as this is the only cup of iced coffee I’ve had in recent memory that didn’t require any dairy or sweetening product to make palatable. They also make their ice cubes out of coffee, instead of water. Silicon Valley venture capitalists would refer to this as «disrupting the iced coffee space,» and would value their shop at $ 250 million. Myself, I just get irritated when I see other places that use regular ice cubes, because, duh, why WOULDN’T you use coffee-​ice?
So basically what I’m saying is, you should hop on the Orange Line right now, and go get a cupcake here.

I actually stopped by here today because I was trying to find the owner of the store next door who couldn’t be found. BUT I went home with two delicious cupcakes in hand. My mom tried the lemon and I tried the maple bacon. The chocolate frosting was perfect (not too sugary) and the teeny bits of bacon inside were delightful. I loved it! The owners were super nice and the inside was really cute. The only downside is the price but I’m not complaining, my stomach is happy. I’ll definitely be stopping by again!

I grabbed a caramel chocolate cupcake to go. It was ok. The chocolate cupcake part was pretty good but the frosting was too thick for my liking. I have had much better cupcakes but would probably go back and try another flavor before writing this place off forever.

I don’t like most cup cake places… they are pricey & the cupcakes hurt my stomach. But my kids like them so we stopped in.
They make very good cupcakes – everything is fresh & a lot of options that aren’t overly sweets.
We had a strawberry cream cheese cup cake that had an Oreo cookie crust & a fresh strawberry on top — It was delicious. They also had some home made donuts – not overly sweet or iced & cookies that looked good too.
The also have a good selection of gluten free goods that really do taste good – which I really appreciate.

I write you from a Monumental Cupcakes induced sugar haze. Would I do it again? Definitely. The cupcake I just had was vanilla buttercream on chocolate cake and it was worth writing home about. I think that this vanilla buttercream might be what angels eat, or what clouds are made of. impossibility soft with wee specks of beany goodness. Nom nom nom. I’d write more but I am floating up to heaven now…

Our best friend had fresh vegan cupcakes delivered to us at work from Monumental Cupcakes. On the phone, they said they were only going to make chocolate and vanilla, but we ended up with a fantastic surprise! Three vanilla cupcakes and three chocolate cupcakes with vanilla bean frosting, peanut butter frosting or chocolate frosting.
Let me tell you, these are the most delicious cupcakes (vegan or not vegan) I have tasted in a very long time! I would not hesitate to go here every day if I weren’t concerned about rapidly expanding my waistline!
I cannot wait to eat more of these delicious delicacies. I would highly recommend grabbing some of these!!!

A neighborhood spot that I just can’t bring myself to hate. I’ve tried, even. With their cupcake obsession, pour over coffees, and freshly squeezed juice menu this should be easy!
For the record: I’m pretty sure they don’t *allow* non-​natural sweeteners on their property. Like for serious. Leave the Splenda, Stevia, and otherwise in the umbrella rack, you dirty animals.
As you can see, it shakes me at my core to leave anything other than a 1-​star review. But, I can’t because…
— Your cupcakes are good. And you even put them in cute litttle boxes for me when I need a gift and am in a hurry.
— Your fresh juice is served cold, and I appreciate that.
— I’ve never had to wait line or wait very long for anything, but I’m pretty sure that’s because you don’t have any customers. That entertains me, really. How do you do it?
— Finally, and most importantly, you persevere against all odds. Bravo.
South St. JP doesn’t have any patience for this type kind of crap, so I’m not sure how you do it, but I respect you for hanging in there.

Straight up, here’s what I expect when I walk into a cupcake place or an opium den. I want everyone around me to be happy or, at the very least, chill; and I want it to smell amazing. To be fair, Monumental has that second thing down pat, as it really does smell good in there.
This is the problem, though. Firstly, this place is waaaaaaaay overpriced. Like, crazy overpriced. So much so that I, craving a cupcake, actually had to do a double take at the price and ask myself: «Do I really want this, or am I just bored?» At a cupcake place, this should never be a thing. You’re there for one reason only: to put frosting in your mouth via the delivery system of moist, spongy baked dough. Anything that prevents said transaction is an automatic deduction of points.
And secondly, the guy running the store is a seriously surly dude. Granted, man, this is your place, operate it however you want to, but let’s not act like you’re doing me a favor by taking my money. I may be kind of a tool, but let’s just pretend like I’m sorta alright while I’m handing you my crisp twenty dollar bill. After I peace out of your store, cupcakes in hand, you can make fun of me all you want. Seriously. I won’t even be mad.
So, that’s that.
Oh, and their fresh juice is crazy expensive. Seriously, don’t get it there. It’s a total ripoff.

Now don’t get me wrong– I still love this place, but they way they operate is kind of puzzling.

I came around 3:30 on a Wed. and there was a scarce variety of cupcakes available which included no red velvet. I find this strange for coming 1.5 hours after they opened. I thought they would have prepped better, knowing red velvet is popular and sells quickly and being closed the following 2 days prior.
I was told it’d be 40 mins for a fresh batch.
I still love the flavors and fresh ingredients used, but I guess I have to come right when they open, or call ahead to get more of a variety.

We had a company event catered by Monumental Cupcakes and I must say I was blown away by their vanilla cupcake. It has such concentrated and authentic vanilla flavor, both in the cake and the frosting. It is the best cupcake I have ever tasted. It is, however, the only cupcake I was able to try as my colleagues positively SWARMED the table. Still, based on this cupcake alone I have to give credit where credit is due.
Visiting their website is, however, a monumentally disappointing experience. It’s pretty awful and makes me worry about their longevity as a company. I’ve yet to visit the storefront but will as soon as I can. I need to try more of these delicious cupcakes.

They now have Guatemalan and Sulawesi coffee beans! Both are good. It’s one of the few places where you can find Sulawesi and it’s nicely roasted. Try it!
