I noticed this store carries decorative animals made with real rabbit fur from China. Many folks know by now the torture and cruelty that is involved, and that the animals are skinned alive, taking sometimes 10 min. to die. I approached the owner, Jim, and he must have heard it before because as soon as I calmly asked him if he would consider not selling these Chinese items because of the extreme cruelty, he said he doesn’t care and as long as it’s legal he will continue selling. I will NEVER shop at the store again. I was going to buy a bunch of greeting cards, but I put them all back. I could not believe his coldness. I can never support a store where the owner support s such blatant inhumane cruelty to animals.

Ye Olde Candy mine or whatever is the main reason my kids want to go to Julian. Once we have hit the candy mine, their trip is complete and we can depart immediately, even if we’ve only been in town 30 seconds. A 1.5 hr trip into the mountains to score candy you can buy anywhere else for cheaper might seem ludicrous, and it is, but the charm of the candy mine is that it’s decorated like a mine and you descend into the basement, where skeletons and rubby ducks and a weird birdcage abound. Grab a bucket and you can get candy for $ 7.99 a pound: things like peanut butter cups, gum; not much of the old-timey hard to find candy anymore, unfortunately(but maybe that wasn’t a big draw). Upstairs you can get souvenirs like jack-a-lope statues and such. Anyway, if you happen to be in Julian, and you happen to have little kids, they will like it, even if you personally know it to be kinda cheesy and recognize the distinct basement-y scent of mildew. Doesn’t matter. It’s like going to a decorated house on Halloween.

I was in Julian with the fam for Easter when I passed by this place. I spotted a white fox tail in the window and just about died! Its definatly a hot accessory to have for the moment and when I saw the price it was mine. I had the pleasure to meet the owner Jim. He was so sweet and took me for a tour of Rudi’s Candy Mine. Its like a hidden basment filled with candy. It had a bunch of old school candy that I love. But my favorite candy was the Rudi Racoon Homemade Chocolate. He made it up himself and its Orange Choco goodness. Definatly going back, I just love Julian!
