This place closed a few years ago I get tired of finding out the hard way that places no longer open are still on Unilocal

If you’re looking for decent Mexican food you won’t find it here. Most ingredients are obviously bought in bulk and pre-made. The chips were stale, the tortillas were slapped on and off the warmer so fast they were cold as well as stale, and the carne asada was chewy and being held in some kind of water or broth bath and looked boiled rather than having been properly grilled. It was pretty obvious that the employees didn’t care that they were serving substandard food either. The food and the service were both terrible; I will definitely never be going back.

Complete garbage. There were only two employees. One girl who’s customer service. She was mean. There was a shorter big there, he was nice but forgot to warm our tortillas and he didnt really speak english so he got all of our orders wrong. They get there supplies from costco so the food was bland. they only had bottle water and were out of most of the supplies on the menu. The food that we got was terrible. We wished we would have read the reviews before walking in. This place wont last.

Overpriced and not so bueno! Shredded chicken… no thanks… maybe the other meats would have been better, but I liked my chicken grilled and looking like someone actually made an effort. The chicken didn’t even seem seasoned. Bummer. Go to Killer Tacos down the road. So much more worth it.

Tacos del mar dont know the true meaning of del mar. They have nothing from the sea. You would think they will specialize in shrimp tacos but they dont. They give very small portions. And overpriced. Overall i would avoid this place.

Read my tip… They have ridiculous pricing for veggie food especially with their limited choices.

Very average. Nothing was hot. Not much flavor. Not very fresh. Won’t be back anytime soon.

It was taco Tuesday and I was looking forward to a crunchy carnita taco special for lunch but alas, the door was locked. Too bad, it was the closest thing to Chipotle restaurant style Mexican food. Specials were decent, food was fresh. I’ll check back later, just in case they open up again…

Skip it. You’re in Hawaii, tacos/burritos should(and do) taste much better than this bland, boring nonsense! From the watery black beans to the frozen fish sticks and bottled salsa, take the step to Unilocal a much better taco spot than this over-starred disaster in a tortilla.

This place was nothing special, but we were just looking for something quick. We both had the crispy tacos, I had one chicken and one carne asada. Both meats were flavorful, but the meat was so wet that the shells turned to mush on the bottom and broke before even eating. My husband had the carne asada also and said that it was ok. Over all, for the price of these taco, I would have expected better.

I went here after a long flight and was sooooo hungry I could’ve eaten a horse and thought it tasted like caviar. But I didn’t even think this was good :(Then again, I’m spoiled with Mexican food since I’m from CA so take this with a grain of salt. Food — The tacos were just ingredients from Costco. Drink — They only had 4 or 5 drink choices. They didn’t even have water! Service — The people working here were inept. They automatically gave us a combo meal. When I said that I didn’t want a combo meal, just the tacos, he told me that it was the same price either way. So I choose a drink(there were no good choices but hey its free) and see him bring the price up a few dollars. What? I told him that I only wanted the tacos and would only want a drink if it were free. This went on a good 2 minutes with him repeating that its free but demanding extra money until he admitted, «Oh well its not free but its a good value so most people want the combo meal.» He also gave us the incorrect change… but after how long it took for him to agree that adding two dolars isn’t free, I was not going to have a long conversation about math.

I honestly have no idea how this place has 4 stars… food is bland, luke warm, only seasoned with salt. The server didn’t know what tortilla chips were, and they were just tostinos chips from the grocery store. The fish was pre cooked and left on a plate to be served cold. Even the salsa or guac didn’t add anything to it. The beans were overcooked and mush, and the rice was undercook and hard as a rock. Overall? Worst Mexican food of my life, and I’m from CA and have had plenty of it…

This place has gone down hill under the new ownership. Looking around it seems they don’t care much and are trying to skimp on by. Last time we ate there they were out of black beans, cilantro, Coke and Dr. Pepper. Who is running this place? We will look elsewhere til we hear better.

Husband and I ate here on our honeymoon to the Big Island last November — it was totally delicious! We had never eaten at a Taco Del Mar before but we’re forever fans. We both went after 5pm, so we got our entrees for $ 6 — a great deal! The food was very fresh and delicious. The service was very friendly and fast.

Fast, DELICIOUS and SUPER helpful and patient staff. Sister and I were having a hard time making up our minds, pinto/black beans, pork/chicken/beef. etc. They gave us half and half on the beans, added more cheese when I made the mmm sound, threw in the chips and just made us feel welcome and our business appreciated. Highly recommend for a quick bite! Yum.

This chain restaurant is seen all over the island. The food is pretty good as well as the prices. I ordered a quesadilla and got the option of a flour, whole wheat, or spinach tortilla. I love spinach so I went for that and it was delicious. My family ordered mostly tacos and quesadillas and were all pretty satisfied. The staff were friendly and the location was clean. This is a good stop for a quick bite when your on a tight budget.

Pretty good tacos, however it seems that most of the ingredients are simply bought at costco and presented as such(like the tortilla chips). Enjoyed my chicken taco and shredded beef taco, however the«alaska fish» one had a couple of deep fried fish sticks cooked and thrown in there… reminded me of bad elementary school fish. The real deal is to come in the evening and get the«platters» for 6 dollars instead of the normal price of 8 I believe.

We were DELIGHTED to find this fun, fast, and delicious Mexican restaurant so close to the Kona airport. We needed a quick meal before loading ourselves, the kids, and all our luggage on an airplane back to the mainland and this place hit the spot. It’s cafeteria style, so you order at the front, then sit at a table with no table service. Tips are optional at the register. The people who work there are very friendly, there’s plenty of tables, lots of locals, kids are welcome, and the prices are phenomenal. All in all a great stop to or from the airport, though there’s not much else out there(Bob’s Snorkel or Costco).
