Shake’s is my go-​to bar in Kalamazoo for beer or food. It’s got a GIANT selection of craft beer and ciders on tap, a full liqueur selection, a great kitchen that’s open pretty late, all the popcorn you can eat, four pool tables, two dart boards, countless televisions, a sweet shuffleboard table, and the frequent concert/​comedy show in the basement. The staff is amazing and so personable. The kitchen is great and open late.
However, if you want a fancier atmosphere or food that isn’t bar food (it’s great bar food however), you might want to check elsewhere. Also, it’s 21 and up after like 8 pm or so (don’t quote me on that though)

Decent place with a large parking lot. Easy to come here to hang out with large groups of friends since it’s so large. I dig the free popcorn, but I just wish the kitchen was open later! It’s not a place I’d want to eat sober but would love the opportunity to chow down on some nachos drunkenly. Service has been okay the last couple of times I went. Occasionally servers would forget your order, but I just persist and eventually get what I need.

Good place if you’re a college student. Beer selection is vast but it’s always noisy and crowded with drunk college kids. Food is pretty good. Always popcorn all over the floor from their free popcorn machine. Bouncers are typically rude

A boisterous place to watch football. A very good, but expensive, on tap beer selection… For Kalamazoo, a very good Reuben sandwich. What’s not to like about a place with a Welsh flag and free popcorn?

This is usually one of my go-​to places for grabbing drinks with friends. I love this place because: (1) it’s pretty big and we never have to wait for a table or have a hard time finding a seat. (2) large outdoor seating area. (3) they have cool bar tap handles that are displayed all over the ceiling. (4) the food is decent (5) it’s a casual atmosphere and I can feel comfortable going out here and not feel like I’m dressed down too much, and (6) you can never go wrong with free popcorn!

I have to amend my previous 3 star review, because their service has definitely improved a ton. I am here almost every Friday for their kick ass happy hour (from 3 to 6 they have half off all pints). Shakes is slowly nudging itself into my heart as one of my favorite bars in Kalamazoo, regardless of the time of day. Thanks for always improving!

Does the floor stick to your shoes? In most spots.
Do I still give this place credit? Yes!
Shake’s has a great beer selection with decent food. Most importantly, it has a little something for everyone. A good local watering hole with something going on most nights of the week. This review is weighed more heavily on the spirits and atmosphere… I come here more often to play pool and enjoy a beverage or two with friends.

Really great beer selection in a very cool atmosphere. Love the tons of tap handles hanging from the ceiling and the general vibe of the place. The live music was not too loud too which was great in my opinion. I could sit in this place all day long drinking. Shakespeare’s has a lot of places to compete with (i.e. all the great breweries in town) but I think they measure up. Great place to go if you want to try a variety of beers in a cool lookin’ place.

Not much to say other than the food is hit or miss here. Today was a miss. My husband ordered a club and they totally forgot the lettuce tomato and mayo. I ordered the Cali Reuben and had to order more coleslaw and thousand island dressing. No pickle on either of our first plates and that’s a given. The staff was wonderful. We spoke to the manager and he gave my husband a new sandwich and took half off our sandwiches. The manager also sent us an extra order of wings. We’ll be back because I like it here, but speak up if it’s not to your satisfaction. We’ve been here when the food was great. They have a big beer selection that changes often, featuring local microbrews. Good luck.

Shakes is a staple in the downtown Kalamazoo bar scene! Walking distance to a bunch of other bars with convenient parking. Shakes has karaōke on wed and sun nights and comedy Thursday night during the school year downstairs in the lower level. You’ll never have a problem finding something delicious to drink in this place. Liquor to beer you have plenty of options!

This establishment doesn’t want or deserve your money. Go somewhere else. They didn’t even look at my friend and told him that he was too drunk to come in when he was completely sober. I can understand not letting in obviously intoxicated people but this wasn’t the case at all. The manager was rude and demeaning. We went down the street and spent all of our money there instead. It’s unfortunate, because I used to like this bar.

Stopped here with a large group of family. The place was pretty quiet, we had one not super fast server for our group of 15. She didn’t know what beers we’re on tap, and kept remarking she hadn’t worked since they changed the menu. Food was just ok, average bar food, nothing special.

The free popcorn and a huuuge number of beers on tap might be the best thing about this place. There is also this cool light beer challenge for like $ 3 where u have to guess between miller, bud, pbr, and labatt.
They charge $ 1.50 to sample a beer. Maybe because college students would run em dry? Idk. We simply asked for one try and we were already purchasing beers so it’s not like we weren’t already giving them money.
Service was pretty bad, it’s like they didn’t know it was Homecoming weekend and sent in the rookies to handle tables. There were 2 times when we asked to order another round but instead she brought us the tab to pay off.

I have been to Shakes tons of times as it’s just a few miles from my house and it’s one of my favorite hang outs! Free popcorn and lots of beers on draft. Great food and decent service. This place is HUGE and can get really really busy on big bar nights. You can’t go wrong at Shakes!

We arrived late on Saturday night, a group of 6. Four of us are from New York and the other two, Michigan. The guy at the door who took my ID folded it (NY IDs are very flexible) and asked to see another photo id. Who carries multiple photo IDs? I told him all NY IDs are like this and there were three similar ones behind me. After checking and bending all of our IDs the other guy at the door told him «that should be fine».
It’s fine to be thorough, but it’s not necessary to be so rude.
Once we were seated everything was wonderful. A few of us shared the BBQ chicken pizza, which was delicious. We were seated outside which was very nice, and when it reached a certain time, we were politely asked to move inside. Overall, with the exception of the guy at the front door, a good experience.

I use to have a lot of fun with my old friends here. Its always a pretty good time here I can’t really complain.
They have a HUGE selection of beers on tap!
The selections are excellent and seem to change every week.
Decent food and good pricing!
On the slight downside the people here constantly do not know their own drink specials and always seem caught off guard when we ask.
