I’d give them 5stars if their menu was a tad more varied. The quality is truly outstanding and from scratch. The cookies are worth the calories. Plus, the laid back vibe is just what one needs on a Saturday morning. Glad Scratch is in our neighborhood.

Ok, here’s the deal. This place used to be pretty decent when it was Soho bakery but since the re-naming, it’s gone downhill. The things the other reviewers mention on here that are great(blackberry peach muffins, specialty pizza’s, cookies) were just carried over from the previous owner. The menu is pretty average. But the consistency is horrific. Cookies are often rock hard. Scones are dry one day and not baked through the next. Muffins are burned one day and barley solid the next. Croissants are often flat because they didn’t proof them properly but they sell them anyway because they don’t care. The fruit danishes and breakfast bars are usually soggy because they don’t strain the juice beforehand. The granola bars are usually burned and might break your teeth if you’re not careful. I get the feeling the bakers are unskilled and underpaid. And the management doesn’t have the skill or resources to do better. It’s sad. Because the place used to be awesome. And the fact that they have accounts with half the coffee shops in KC is an atrocity to mankind. Think I’m exaggerating? Try Ibis bakery and compare. Try Baked in KC. Try Andre’s in brookside. Anything but here.

Scratch is one of my favorite coffee shops and study spots in KC. I was excited to find out that they were now going to be open on Sundays, but unfortunately it appears to be false advertising. I have ventured over there now 3 different Sundays and they have been closed every single time. Very disappointing!

I stopped in this morning looking for a quick bite for breakfast and ended up leaving with 3 different types of cookies! The guys were really welcoming and helpful. I picked out the coconut macaroon and the monster cookie(both delicious) and let the barista choose his favorite cookie. He nailed it! The salted white chocolate cookie outshone the rest! Thanks for the suggestion guys– the cookies will be a sweet snack on my drive back to STL!

I’m not a morning sweets person but the Blackberry Peach Muffin at Scratch Bakery is incredible. When I go in for coffee I always hope they’re sold out of that muffin so I’m not tempted but today they weren’t so I went for it and ate every last crumb and thought they deserved a review. All of their baked goods are amazing and made in house. If you walk on May St.(the West side of the building) and it’s late night/early morning, you can see them working away preparing buttery, flaky, delicious treats.

Scratch is the supplier of baked goods to a lot of my favorite haunts around town — The Mixx, PT’s Coffee, Filling Station, and Crow Coffee. Their baked goods are delicious; I’ve tried a wide variety of their items from almond croissants to scones and danishes to cookies and muffins, and they are all top notch. Scratch also sets themselves apart by having a number of unique flavor combinations and offerings not seen many other places — like the Blackberry Peach Muffin and Lemon White Chocolate Cookie. We loved the Pumpkin Cookie when it was in season. I enjoy visiting their café when I’m in the downtown area because there is such a wide variety in their selection of bakery items, plus some hot items like quiche or biscuits and gravy(whole wheat, love). They also deliver solid beverages too. The espresso based drinks, pour over and chai latte(local Hugo Tea!) are delicious and can compete with any other coffee shop in the area, in my opinion. I would agree with another poster that the ambiance is a bit lacking or sterile, and that’s in a space with so much potential between the exposed brick and high ceilings. It was more cozy pre-renovation with the cushy armchairs they used to have. So while it might not be my favorite cozy go-to spot, the baked goods and drinks more than make up for it.

This is my go-to place. It’s delicious(all their baked goods are made in house), they are super duper friendly, they are reasonably priced, their drinks are perfection, and the ambiance is adorable. My only struggle with Scratch is trying NOT to buy their scrumptious baked goodies(seriously, MUST they be so good?)! Okay fine, you win Scratch. I’ll have another biscotti. They are only the best I’ve ever eaten. Sigh.

I must say I really wanted to like this place. I live close. It’s in a great building and seems very romantic. I had visions of curling up with my coffee and watching the snow outside… In reality, the coffee is pretty good but the atmosphere is a bit droll. Can’t be helped much but there aren’t any windows except for the ones in the front and one on the side. It makes the entire place a little darker than I’d like. The chairs and tables are pretty blah and not that comfortable. There is so much hard space, it echoes when you talk. I’ve been here 3 separate times and every time, we’re the only people in the space which makes it feel uninviting. They do have quiche which was just okay. I’ve gotten it twice now and probably won’t again. The breakfast burrito was better. They also have muffins and other coffee-shop fare. I’d rather walk to the River Market and check out the shops down there than come back here again.

A last minute impulse was to try this place out as I was in the neighborhood and from the sidewalk a tiny sign said, «bakery». I had great cup of coffee and an excellent almond croissant. The guy working at the counter was super friendly. Oh yes, I’d be here all the time if I lived next door, so let’s hope that happens!

Great coffee & bakery items. Really really should get more comfortable chairs. Should have kept the lounge chairs in the window

I have loved everything I ever ate here. The peanut butter and chocolate mixed cookies are awesome. This bakery does not seem to have caught the cancer most other businesses that serve cookies contracted from Subway who started pushing half baked product. Well worth the trip. Also available at the Main St library.

I honestly has one of the best snicker doodles I’ve ever had in my life here. The grilled cheese sandwich was perfection. No surprise here… the baked goods were the stars. Good food, nice vibe. I’ll come back for more cookies.

I am obsessed with cookies and these are some of the best! Try their pumpkin or salted caramel white chocolate. Owner is super nice too — he let us check out their bakery and gave us a tour!

I worked for the oldest family owned coffee company in the US for 5 years, Community Coffee in New Orleans. They pretty much started speciality coffee about 100 years ago. So I learned a lot about good coffee and making it right. Scratch has the best Latte and Capacinno I’ve ever had. Worth the trip.

We live nearby and were out for a wall today when we stumbled upon Scratch. We just got two breakfast goodies — a cinnamon roll with ample icing and the chocolate scone. Both were delicious! The scone starts off a bit cocoa-y and then the spicy shows up. A wonderful delayed delight! We’ll be back soon, for sure! Service, by the way, was very friendly. I got a very cheerful«good morning» when I walked in and a sincere«thanks for coming by» on my way out.

Carbs. If you don’t like carbs, just stop here. Then again, if you don’t like carbs, why are you looking into a bakery? Anyway, I walk by this place every day and it’s tempting not to stop in and grab pastry on my way to work(hello, cheese danish). Scratch has your standard bakery fare(the aforementioned danish, muffins, etc.) and also tosses in some lunch and breakfast items. Biscuits and gravy, you’re next on my list of things to try at this place. And, unless I’m wrong, Scratch also provides their baked goods to other places around town like Quay Coffee. Speaking of the coffee, Scratch has it, but(and I’m sorry), it has nothing on Quay. Ideally, I’d walk to Scratch, grab my danish, and then head to Quay for some mocha. They are doing some remodeling and expanding, so I’m curious to see what they have in line for the future. If they could possibly increase the quality of their coffee just a little bit, I’ll give it the five star treatment. Because I know that’s what everyone really wants out of life, all the stars.

This location is now owned by the Bakery that has always made their baked goods. I’ve leveraged my previous reviews for Soho and added new items for Scratch! FIVESTARS! SCRATCHBAKERYNOWOPENSATURDAYS! Best croissants this side of the Atlantic, no question. The location is very convenient for several condo buildings in the Garment District, especially SOHO Lofts. The windows are open on nice days, so you get free smells as you walk out in the morning, which is absolutely delightful. It’s only open until 3pm, which is fine with me, because this place doesn’t try to be anything it isn’t; it’s a gorgeous little coffee shop /bakery that offers amazing baked goods and cheap drinks. I am a tea/coffee hound, and I have pretty high standards for price/quality. I’ve been hard on some of the more popular local spots in the River Market and elsewhere that I don’t think meet my standards on one or the other. Some offer ridiculously small cups for a high price, some have terrible/inconsistent service. This place has neither. It has a very friendly staff, reasonably priced drinks that are well made, and some of the best smelling baked goods in the area. I would come in here to work for an hour or so just to smell the cinnamon rolls. Their entire baking operation is viewable down a hallway, so you can see them hard at work making hand crafted items. Also, most nights, a worker will be in there preparing baked goods long into the morning hours; this is NOT Starbucks, where they take their Caramel Salted Treats out of the freezer, or throw their English muffin sandwiches in the microwave, this is an honest to God bakery, and I have a soft spot for shops like this. The service is very friendly. Not overbearing, not in your face, but a chill vibe that is pleasant on an early morning. You’re not going to get a «Whaddya WANT» like you might in a busy line at a chain coffee store. Just a casual inquiry. The seating is not as comfortable or plentiful as you might expect, but the vast majority of customers are in-and-outers, so I understand that. Still, it’d be nice to have a nook with a couple soft chairs to cozy up in on a cold morning with a hot drink and a scone. This is a great spot, and I haven’t found a better option in the area. Places like Quay and Opera House in the River Market are near the top of my list, after changes in ownership, but they’ll be hard pressed to compete with this place for its convenience, ambiance and quality of products. Scratch also makes the pastries for some of the aforementioned coffee shops, so they must be doing something right!
