Hong Kong Market

Hong Kong Market has become our to go asian grocery store in the area. Even though it’s a small store, they have everything we look for; from Chinese BBQ to banh mi sandwiches to fresh meat and produce. We’ve noticed that the meat selection varies from day to day, maybe it depends on who’s working. It’s clean and the seafood area isn’t too smelly. The cashiers are always courteous and efficient. We usually shop early on the weekends since they get busy and the shared parking lot fills up fast.

This market is close to home and has everything I needed for a lovely Thai dinner at home. Though, I did walk in, looking for fresh rice noodles, only to find them on the bread shelf with a sticker saying ‘keep refrigerated.’ But, they were still cold, so I took them. Not knowing if they were cold because of the store temperature, or just being taken from a fridge somewhere. :)

I don’t have much if any reason to venture through Kent if any reason at all. Typically from Renton I’ll always go north up to Seattle for my asian market fixes or swing by Viet Wah or Uwajimaya.
HK Market however is a few miles away from my work place in Auburn which makes it nice to grab stuff on the way home for market needs, but what I love most about them is their deli inside. A solid spot for cheap eats and vietnamese sandwiches! And it’s superbly good as well. The menu of food changes on a weekly basis, and after a few visits it’s a new go to spot for my Asian food hankerings. For $ 7.99 you get a styrofoam box and you can load up what ever you can for a straight $ 7.99. That’s a deal and a half! They also have roast pork, bbq pork and roast duck there as well. Pair that with some 3 color bean dessert or a coconut juice and you got a lunch plate that can easily feed two people for less than a big mac meal. What’s there to complain about?

I have been to this market a couple of times and it’s okay. Some areas are a little cramp to go through (especially where the pots/​dishes are located). They have a lot of items in stock.
You do have to inspect the meat that you buy here. Some were turning black, but the packaging label printed that it was put out that same day. Also, the staff here aren’t as friendly. I guess I feel for them since the cashier that rang me out was bundled in a thick winter jacket, snow cap, and mittens. This place is freezing!

Good bubble tea and great sandwiches! I love the bbq one. Small market place but convenient for when you need to grab something to make for dinner. But beware, small parking lot and tight parking spaces… And always seems to be pack.

They sell fresh fish like most Asian markets, except they will butcher and fry whatever you want for an additional $ 1 per pound. I was over the moon and will come here often to get fried fish regularly. The entire seafood department is impressive. Fresh blue crabs that looked pre-​cleaned. I now know where to go to get blue crab for my gumbo. They even had frozen crawfish.
The prices seemed to be a bit cheaper than some of the other markets I go to. They had oxtail for $ 4.59 a pound. I had to pick some up to make my oxtail soup. They even sold pre-​packaged spices needed to make phó.
They had two produce areas with a huge variety of fruits and veggies. There was a deli that served hot food that was ready made. I didn’t really pay much attention what was there, cause the fresh fried fish was still something I couldn’t get over. They also sell different ethnic (Eastern European, African, & Latino) products along with the Asian goods.
I will be coming back often.

This market is decently clean for an Asian market with a nice selection of produce, fresh fish, meats and even a hot food deli. Recently replace the fish tanks, so everything looks better in the seafood department now!

They have a good selection of all your basics that you would need to do Asian cooking. Prices are pretty good considering that it is out of China Town and you will pay a little bit more being as there are only a couple Asian markets in the area. This is a little bit out of the way for me, but I definitely make the trip out here whenever I need to do some grocery shopping!

I love Asian markets. I wish they had one in Des Moines. I hope they turn the old QFC into an Asian market. That would be the best idea ever!!!

Really disappointed. Why? I am a Hong Kongese. If it calls «Hong Kong Market» I will expect most of the staff are from Hong Kong or either speak Cantonese. No, recently these 2 years they hired a lot of Vietnamese. I wonder… Will it turn out to be a Vietnamese market? I of course can speak English pretty well, but sometime in Hong Kong some type of foods can’t really be translated to English. That’s why I am disappointed. When went in, 19 out of 20 are non-​hongkongese. I can’t even find someone to ask where is the stuff that I want. I was frustrated. Beside of the staff, I still like what they have in the store. Really ordinary Hong Kong food that I can’t usually find in here market. But will consider to find another Hong Kong market which is bigger.

Hmmm I take back the fresh fruit comment… I’ve gotten apples and plum there and both look great on the outside but we’re molding or bruising in the inside!!! They have good gauvas and Asian fruit but maybe I’ll stick to Safeway for my American fruit.

Specifically, I want to do a review for their deli, the Hong Kong Deli.
They have the best Banh Mis here in Kent. I usually get the #1 Special that has cha (English Name: Asian Ham), pickled vegetables (daikon and carrots) very tasty and well-​pickled, cold cut slices of pork, cucumber sticks, cilantro with egg cream (mayo) and pâté. Very flavorful, very tasty; a well-​made Vietnamese sandwich.
Their other stuff is pretty good like BBQ Pork, Chicken Wings.
Minus will talk about the market in general. They have all the essential items you need for Asian cooking and it is a popular market here in Kent.

I love coming here because they have things regular grocery stores don’t have. I come here to try new things from other countries that you can’t really buy. It’s great to see them have things from my childhood that other stores don’t serve anymore. I love this place.

I LOVE the Hong Kong Market! This place is my favorite store in the Kent area. I’m here pretty regularly for all sorts of stuff, though most often the ingredients for my miso soup!
It isn’t a huge store, but they have a very wide variety of products. I like being able to choose from different brands of items and not just having to pick the only one on the shelf (as you do with a lot of Asian products in regular grocery stores).
Their selection of produce is also really great and the prices are awesome. An example is 8 baby bok choy for less than $ 2.50 — other stores you get maybe 3 for that price (if they have them at all). Prices on other items are a bit higher than I’d like, but considering I can’t find them other places, it’s not a huge deal.
The staff is friendly and helpful. Not everyone speaks English well, but I’ve never had an issue communicating with anyone.
If you haven’t been here, you are missing out. This place is a hidden gem in Kent.

Icy cold store, but prices are cheaper than ‘Wajis or Ranch 99. I’m a soy sauce connoisseur, and the best in the world — Pearl River Mushroom Soy — costs $ 2.50 a bottle here. Two-​and-​a-​half bucks! That’s nuts!

This is the place to go for local Asian grocery. Even though they are small, they carry a good variety of Asian products. So it saves time having to drive to Ranch 99 or Chinatown. I have had good service from them the times I’ve shopped there.

Wide variety of asian products and goods for sale at this grocery. They have a large fresh pork selection and a big seafood section.
There is no self-​service in their live seafood section. They have a lot of fresh fish and shellfish products to choose from.
Their prices are not the cheapest but they are also not outrageous. For a specialty store as small as this one, they have a wide variety of products and reasonable pricing.
Staff is friendly and most speak more than one language.

This place is a great find for the Asian population in the Kent area. If you live around Kent Station or East Hill, this may be a more convenient option than going to Ranch 99. It may be about a third the size of Ranch 99, but it has the essentials.
I was able to find my Jufran banana ketchup, which I can’t find in Safeway or any typical grocery store. And they also sell pork belly sliced the way they need to be sliced for Korean BBQ! This was probably the first location I’ve come across that slices and packages pork belly this way.
Also, their fresh deli has Vietnamese sandwiches that are super tasty for the price! I bought a grilled pork sandwich for $ 2.75. The bread was light and didn’t make your jaw sore or scratch the roof of your mouth. Definitely a good bang-​for-​your-​buck kind of deal.
The only downsides about this place is that the place definitely is a little more limited compared to Ranch 99. And also, «turning left» to get into their parking lot can be quite a challenge because left turns off of Central Ave have a left-​turn lane, but no «left arrow» light, which means you have to yield to oncoming traffic. This could be a challenge especially when you’re coming around rush hour time and everyone is getting home from work. But still, the location and supply is still quite a convenience for me especially if I only need to buy one or two things or a quick bite to eat!

2 SOLID reasons I’d be here…
1) To purchase some live goods in their seafood section
2) To eat TARO Popsicles!!!
Definitely a smaller selection than Ranch 99 or H Mart, but it has what’s needed to get the basic job done for various asian/​pacific islander dishes.

Even though I only visited the front part of the store, this is an awesome place to shop for anything-​Asian food, snack, and cooking. The fruits selection is both mainstream and exotic and price comparable to Winco. They have in-​house uncooked rice noodles for «kao piak sen» (Laotian chicken noodle soup), which saves a lot of time when you run out of time/​scared to submerge your hands in boiling water.
You can easily come in here for loads of snack items coming in under $ 10. I love the prices and am looking forward to exploring the other side of the store.
