Friendly, efficient service with creative choices that are provided in a quant setting with plenty of parking.

This is a famous local hangout spot for youngsters and hipsters. Been here twice. Coffee was not memorable and seating is a bit crammed. Like the book collection and the friendly baristas.

Great coffee and atmosphere. A little hole in the wall place. Price are good, I got a Large Mocha for $ 4. They have seating in the back, which is boardered with bookcases!

Comfortable atmosphere, tables to draw on, and delicious coffee. What more could you want? Great place to kick back and read a book, work on a laptop, or go on a date. I spend 90% of my lunch breaks here. Doubt that’s going to change.

I like this local business because the people work there are always so nice. And they do have nice coffee, they also let you entertain with the huge white drawing paper on the table. They also put books there just in case u are boring haha.

This place has a really cool vibe. Small, quaint, super nice staff, lots of coffee and tea options. Reasonably priced. However, my latte was underwhelming. The espresso didn’t shine through and left me with pumpkin spice flavored milk. I will, however, be back hoping to try some black coffee to give this place the true taste test. I want to add stars to this review, so I’m hoping my next experience is better on the coffee end.

Good coffee options are not a problem in Kent, so where you go is more a matter of style and ambience than quality. In my view, Scribbles has the funkiness and coziness that nearby Tree City lacks. Both places present good college town coffee options, but whereas the latter, on the average morning, is a sea of laptops and cell phones captained by tweeting, texting, video-watching undergrads(no, they aren’t doing homework), the former is a quiet, downstream retreat where one can still hear occasional conversations between actual people. The chalkboard of espresso concoctions that you see to the right of the counter as you walk in is awesome: it’s a lineup of $ 3 classics such as the cortado and the affogato that reminds you how nice good espresso can taste when not diluted by a deluge of milky liquid on top. Order yours in a for-here cup, sip slowly, and enjoy the peace and quiet.

I’m a person with very simple tastes when it comes to coffee shops. I like strong, black coffee. I like books. I like peace and quiet to read said books. I like friendly service, that I myself can interact friendly with, creating a never-ending cycle of friendly. Simple. No muss. No fuss. Just coffee, camaraderie, and books. My last visit to Scribbles was a brief one. It was a Saturday night, and the streets of Kent were teaming with life. I was with my girlfriend and a friend, and we wanted to have some coffee and a chat, maybe a pastry. Scribbles was the destination. Having lived in this town for a while, I knew that Scribbles was opened later than normal on Saturdays. It was almost 10 pm, so we checked the shop hours on the door before preceding inside. The sign said 11pm. We were in luck. The barista working was a girl around college age with a mane of brown hair. She took a second to spot because she was in the lounge area talking with her friends. After getting her attention, she greeted us by saying, «we’re closed… closing. I dumped out all the coffee.» My party looked at her confused. The door had been unlocked. The hours on the door said the shop was opened until 11pm. And I knew for a fact that coffee was part of the name of the business, having ordered hundreds of coffees at this location before. But no coffee. Now, I get it. Sometimes a place closes early, especially on a slow day. It happens. But why close an hour early on a busy night before students are home for the holidays? That’s not good business sense. Especially, when the worker taking care of the shop was going to be there talking with her friends anyway. It’s not like she was reducing the cost of overhead by keeping all the lights on with the door unlocked with no closed sign on the door. The bottom line is that service like this happens all the time at Scribbles. The hours of operation are solely listed for the convenience of the workers, not the customers, so why even list them? You can find better coffee, better service, better books, better prices, and a better atmosphere elsewhere. Scribbles has finally broken this camel’s back.

I hung out a lot here a few years ago. The pastries were home made, the coffee was consistent, the prices were fair, and the atmosphere was great for studying. The owners were great and treated their employees well, and the family that owned it was amazing. I have stopped back in pretty recently a few times now that I’m back in school, and I can say with certainty that I will not be making Scribbles my place for coffee-fueled study this time around. The shop changed hands last year and the quality of the place has really taken a downturn. The new owners are really reactionary to criticism and my favorite barista got fired because of an overblown complaint. The once home baked pastries are now really obviously bought in bulk and sold as though they are still made in small batches. The new owners can’t pull an espresso shot and don’t know about coffee as evidenced by both my verbal interactions with them and their newer menu offerings. And as for the prices, well, I stopped in the other day and paid $ 2 for a small to-go cup of bitter light roast. Additionally, the once study friendly atmosphere has been replaced by a family friendly one, with kids running around being loud and the dim, soft lights replaced by strong, bright ones. It’s atrocious. Given that many of their blends are now produced by Bent Tree, you’re better off going a block up the road and grabbing a cup there — they’ll make it better and you’ll pay a fair price.

This place has owners that truly care about their community. My husband loves their brews, and I love that they support their local schools! You really can’t get any better than Scribbles!

This place exemplifies what a small town, family-owned coffee shop should be. The prices are reasonable, the drinks are well made and prepared quickly and the space is comfortable and acts as a meeting place for both those in the neighborhood as well as those visiting. It really is a lovely environment with friendly service and great little snacks and treats. I love stopping in to grab a drink or hanging out to work on a project. There’s often music or poetry reading in the evenings as well. Best coffee shop in Kent.

A wonderful coffee shop in Kent! It’s just down on Water Street. I believe it has a great view of the Flour Mill across the street that transports you to another time/era. My wife and I have lived in several big cities and quite enjoy the view from the front windows or outside. The service is exceptional and the barista’s make a great latte. I’d bet it’s the best in town beating out Starbucks and Tree City by far. The back room has books for you to read. Students and local townfolk here make it a good place to be

Small, quiet place up the road with window seating in the front room and a back room with no windows, but merchandise on sale. Across from what looks like a grain mill, so you WILL think you’re in Kansas. Coffee was decent if unexceptional. Small, endearing mom & pop place.

Love this place! It’s artsy, comfortable, and friendly. Not your boring old Starbucks or other franchise chain coffee shops. It offers a variety of tea & hot drink combinations that other coffee shops don’t have. You can also enjoy a table outside in the fresh air or indoors surrounded by book shelves, art, and gifts. The prices are fair, there’s lots of privacy & the service is always great! can’t say enough about this cute little gem of a shop :)

Exactly what a coffee shop should be. The various coffee drinks are all excellent. The baristas are skilled, patient, and friendly. The prices are reasonable, and the quality of the coffee renders them a bargain. There are always various homemade confections available: the peanut butter fudge is legendary(among my friends, at least) and the no-bake cookies a close second. They also offer a small assortment of bottled specialty drinks. The actual venue is another bright spot. Nice, clean, but not overly fancy. A very«homey» vibe, and it’s very comfortable to spend several hours drinking coffee and visiting with friends. A larger-than-average space that doesn’t lose the«intimate» feel that characterize the best cafes. My lone complaint is that they’re not open on Sundays.(to my knowledge). It’s a testament to how great of a place Scribbles is that I’m genuinely disappointed when it’s closed.

Definitely the best coffee shop in Kent. Unlike the Starbucks down the road, this place isn’t overrun with undergrads. You’re more likely to encounter a group of hippies. Their selection of espresso beverages is quite expansive. They offer far more varieties than Starbucks and far better quality to boot. I’m a big fan of their pumpkin frappé this time of year. Otherwise, I mostly stick to the delicious cappuccinos. In addition to espresso, they offer smoothies and tea, as well as tasty baked goods. Try the muffins and cookies– you won’t be disappointed. I’m pretty sure the place is family-owned, which I love. Every staff member has been more than friendly. They are very casual and laid-back so be patient if your latte doesn’t appear in thirty seconds. It’s worth the wait. And hey, take that time to chat with your barista. The establishment has two rooms full of comfy chairs and couches and lots of books to thumb through as you’re sipping your drink. Great place to escape the typical college town establishments.
