Torn between a 3 and 4 star. «Why Ruben, why?» Boys and girls, pull up a chair. Everything we had tasted great: –brisket –rib –turkey –pulled pork frito pie –potato salad The bark on their food was just how I like my bbq, heavy, salty and peppery. The only drawback is that their turkey was dry. Yes. dry. While it had good flavor, I prefer my turkey a bit more moist. I would go back for their brisket. And their ribs. And their pulled pork frito pie. And their potato salad. And their burnt ends. Man, those things are delicious. Oh, and it’s BYOB! Cha-ching!

For whatever reason, we do not eat barbecue very often in our little town of Kyle. We have been to Milt’s a handful of times. I think it is because Amber is with me when I am at home, and BBQ is not her first choice. I was excited when South Austin BBQ opened up in Kyle about six months ago. It took over the spot along I-35 where Milt’s vacated when they moved. It is a family ran business with John Zamora Sr and Jr. Do not Google just South Austin BBQ. You will never find it. Add Kyle to the search. Amber and I stopped in for lunch on a Tuesday. There are quite a few options of meat on the menu. Not many places I go to offer plates anymore so I was excited to see a 3-meat plate for twelve bucks. Count me in with moist brisket, pork ribs, and sausage. Amber got a Z-Bowl which is essential Frito pie with no cheese. The brisket was okay. It was falling apart and tasted fine. The ribs had a good flavor and were smoky, but they were dry and looked old. They were closed Sunday and Monday so hopefully I was not fed Saturday’s ribs. Although the sausage was on the greasy side, it had a nice texture and snap to the casing. Beans were fine and nothing special to note about the potato salad. You get a huge portion with the Z-Bowl. It will fill you up. I wish it came with cheese. It would have brought everything together better. I was a little disappointed in this visit. I guess I was expecting great things. I will give South Austin BBQ another shot considering it is so close to our house. I might stop in during the weekend next time.

Overpriced. Texture of roast beef. Overly smokey. Mac n cheese was like it was from a box and the beans were sweet. I got there close to closing. Trying to make an excuse for them. We won’t be back.

Stopped here because the train was blocking the tracks and I didn’t want to wait to get to Milt’s. I’ve see the place for month and just wasn’t sure. I got 2 chopped beef sandwiches. Served with pickles, pickles, onions, and BBQ sauce on the side. I got them to go, and when I got home my husband was confused by how big they were. They were HUGE, I could only eat half of mine. The meat was well seasoned, the sauce was a little bland. Overall though it was delicious.

Best BBQ in Kyle and extremely affordable for the family. They also have the best service and so friendly. I would definitely recommend if you are craving great BBQ.

I decided I wanted to try this place as I had heard great things about it. I had thought they were closed as it was after 7pm. We walked in and placed a To Go order. The food was a little expensive. It was almost $ 26 for just two of it. I did enjoy talking BBQ with one of the guys there. When we got home, the brisket was the perfect amount of smoke and flavor. It was not over seasoned. I had gotten a «Z» bowel with brisket. It would have been nice to have cheese and jalapeños, but was perfect none the less. I was going to opt for a dessert, but the desserts seemed a little on the small side and did not see spending $ 3 for a small piece of pie. I will definitely be back to get more food from this place. My wife mentioned that she thought the BBQ was better here than the Salt Lick.

We always get out BBQ here and are never disappointed. We usually get the beef plate with sides but today we got two chipped beef sandwiches. Wow, a lot of beef and large! Great deal xompared to another local«BBQ» place along 35. This is really a great BBQ place I just wish it was in a different.location.

The brisket was excellent, turkey was nice and smokey. Family pack is a good value. Service was friendly and fast. Beans were tasty but not very tender. Potato salad was nothing special.

My friend recommended this place to meet for lunch. At first I past it up and had to come up the back way, cause I wasn’t expecting it to be small. But I knew better than to underestimate a place by the size. The guy working there asked if it was our first time and he gave us samples of the brisket. It was really good! We got something called the Z-bowls which is a meat(brisket, sausage or turkey) on Fritos w beans and jalapeños. Like a Fritos pie, the guy said. It was really good. The customer service was great!

I went today and the food was good. I split the 3 meat and it came with 2 sides potato salad and beans. The portion was a good size. I also ordered ¼ lb of turkey just to try it. I loved the potato salad and pulled pork! All in all good portion vey nice staff and not too expensive. l the 3 meats was $ 11. I will definitely be back there. I would’ve given them 5 stars but the dinning area although clean was cold maybe a space heater for the cooler days. But the food was awesome

South Austin BBQ is off the 213 exit on the west side of 35. We finally made it over today and it was great. We got a family plate, 1.5lbs of meat and two sides for $ 22– excellent deal for Texas BBQ. Service was very friendly and fast. Brisket was fatty upon request, the pulled pork was my favorite part, but though the ribs were good I wasn’t over the moon about them. Ready to go back for sausage and turkey next.

Got some brisket to go the other night and wow it was good. Very tender and very economical. Brisket, bread and two sides for $ 9. Not sure why it’s a dollar more on the weekend but it was still a. good deal. Great smoky flavor and real tender. The dining area is small but again we got it to go. Stop by and try it out, you won’t be disappointed.

Came here as we were searching for good bbq and were we surprised! Fabulous tasting bbq. My husband came out to the car with a sample piece as we were grabbing it «to go». We were hugely surprised as we hadn’t heard about it, we just drove past it and decided to give it a whirl. Deliciously moist and smoky tasting, the potato salad was delicious and the prices were fantastic. Can’t wait to have it again and again! Will definitely frequent this place, highly recommend it.

service and food are amazing. The owner is as friendly as it gets, and is interested in you, as the customer. We’ve had the brisket, sausage and beans twice now. Both times, it was delicious. I highly recommend this BBQ!

So I finally had the chance to eat here today… good friendly service, good brisket, good sausage, good turkey, good bbq sauce, beans were okay, potato salad unremarkable, no desserts of any kind :(. Lunch prices are very reasonable, I had the 3 meat plate for $ 10, wife had the 2 meat plate $ 9. Will definitely return to try the ribs and whatnot. They serve a pulled pork sandwich served with coleslaw, but coleslaw is NOT one the side choices, only potato salad and beans(?) which is odd for a BBQ joint. Prices by the pound are about right for the market. They don’t seem to sell beer but, I was offered a Lone Star by the kind gentleman on duty at the time of this visit. It may be BYOB. All in all, good BBQ!(I initially updated this on Tuesday but when I returned today to see if had gotten any hits, it hadn’t been posted!)

Normally I don’t give Unilocal reviews to a business that’s just openining & this review might be subject to change later on but I think these guys might be on to something here. As far as Texas BBQ goes in the Kyle/Buda area, it’s slim pickens & as far as BBQ goes here, South Austin BBQ is off to a good start! I ordered the 3 meat plate. Flavor-wise, the spices are great & I’m not sure what their secret is but it’s goooood! The brisket was on point & the burnt ends were pleasant. Ribs were just as good but a little tough. Being a new business, the manager & the pitmaster were both going around asking us how our food was. I gave them my honest opinion & the manager brought me out a fresh rib off the smoker! Ok, now THAT rib was the bomb. Hot, greasy, falling off the bone the way good Texas BBQ ribs were meant to be. If they make them like that for now on, the rating will most definitely change to 5! Sides were also good but found the potato salad to be meh. Sausage was also good, not sure if it’s made in-house or supplied but still tasty. Anywho, if you’re a BBQ junkie like me & looking for a new joint to check out, or if you just happen to be in Kyle & hungry, give these guys a shot & you won’t be dissapointed! ew helps others learn about great local businesses.
