Little Lodge of La Jolla

Like the reviewer before me, if I could give negative stars I would.
I rented Little Lodge of La Jolla and the owner, Dan Courtney, who also owns the neighboring property La Jolla Shores Vacation was difficult and dishonest in our dealings.
I initially booked this place, but then quickly decided (by quickly, I mean within 30 hrs after booking), that his place was not right for us. In addition, this was also 25 days (so nearly a month) prior to the date we had booked. I immediately contacted Dan to let him know his place wasn’t ideal, and I apologized and asked what I could do to get out of the contract.
He was upset, but said he wouldn’t charge me. He did end up charging me and sending me emails that I was bound by the contract I filled out. I called Dan in tears when I saw the charge go through ($ 1800 is a huge financial burden for me!) and he quickly said that he would refund me. The refund never came through. I have record of the phone call I made that day, as well as emails to Dan asking where my refund was, and he asked «did the charge go through» and noted that he would «call them in the morning». I assumed he meant he would be calling the company that was in charge of issuing me the refund. Well, the refund never came through. After attempting to dispute the charge through my CC company (which failed because I had filled out a contract, and he told the
CC card company that he never agreed he would refund me), I called Dan again, and he said that he would NOT be refunding me, and the only reason he said he would in the first place is because I was «fake crying» on the phone.
He verbally agreed to refund me… which he never did. We never even stayed at his place, as I assumed he would hold true to his word so I didn’t attempt cancelling my other reservation. Alas, he didn’t hold to his word. He has since emailed me threats «Use your imagination to figure where this is headed should you, for some reason, feel you have anything positive to gain from continuing your criminal campaign. As a licensed professional, you should anticipate the consequences of your actions.» He has been CCing who I assume to be his attorney for me to take down my reviews about his business, claiming my information is false.

If I could do a negative star, this would be it. We had a reservation for this property — when we arrived it was under construction, no appliances in the kitchen, painters still working in the lodge, completely uninhabitable. I can understand construction delays, but the way it was handled by the owner was completely unprofessional– no apology given, no offer to get us other accommodations — we ended up going elsewhere which cost us over 3k more for the week! The owner was rude and dishonest. i would NOT recommend giving your business to this individual.
