Top Shot Spearfishing – Maui

John and Chris were great. They were very patient and great teachers. I had a fridge full of fish for 3 days! I love that they explained the finer points of spearfishing (stalking of fish, positioning, etc…) I highly recommend these guys to anyone looking to try spearfishing.

This is a top notch operation! There was a southern swell that was making visibility poor, so rather than take us out in poor conditions, they waited two weeks to get us out. Well, yesterday was the day and it was well worth the wait! We were taught the basics of freediving, using the speargun, fish identification, spearfishing techniques, etc. Chris and John were an amazing team in teaching us how to spearfish. Once we were in the water, the beautiful area they took us to was great for freediving and great for spearfishing. I’m here for another week and hope to get out with them at least one and hopefully two more times. I would highly recommend getting out with Top Shot as their top priority is your having a great time!

My husband and son did this excursion and they really enjoyed it. They had a great time and will definitely go again when we return to the island next year. I really want to give them five stars because I made a mistake on the reservation and they went the extra mile to make some changes and accommodate us. I was very appreciative of the individual that helped with that. My husband did not like that at the end they were all just standing around while the owner (John I think?) was on a conference call… seemed awkward for everyone so my husband and son left. Overall though, our son thought it was great fun — I highly recommend for a unique, fun excursion!

K1, Keoni, Keone, Keano, Ki, Keaune: these are all the different ways our spearfish guide says his name has been misspelled. I made a promise to add one new misspelling, so let me say Keeyan was a great teacher and guide.
Setting aside the mistakes of haoles such as myself, let me say that this spearfishing trip was the most fun I have had in years. It was exciting and challenging, and felt like success could be around the corner at any minute. I can’t wait to go back!

This was a great activity for my two adult sons and me. We were the only ones in the group and had an open schedule so John was able to give us extra time if we wanted. His land instruction was patient, informative, thorough and entertaining. We really felt confident entering the water. In the water, John gave us patient instruction on diving and stalking technique. The area has beautiful coral formations and fish. The actual spearfishing was a blast and we all scored several fish each. We snorkeled several hours with no problem. The only limitation was breath control that would seperate the novice from the pro. Even without that practice we did well. John cleaned the fish and we had a fish fry that night. We had a great time and learned a new skill.

I went spearfishing with my wife for our honeymoon and this was just one of the many excursions we did while in Maui and I have to say it was the best. John and Chris were absolutely amazing in teaching us everything from loading the spear gun to hunting techniques. My wife was terrified of the whole idea and John really took her under his wing (or fin) and she ended up catching more fish than anyone else that day! We were in Maui for 7 days and I wanted to do this a second time while we were there but had too many other things to do :(
I would recommend this to anyone visiting that island PERIOD

John and Chris took our family on an outstanding experience. Their focus was on safety and technique. They are locals who have spent their lives on the coastline of Maui and were very interesting to talk to and learn from. They were also very interested in learning about our family an in forming a relationship. This Maui excursion is something we will always remember as one of our favorites

This was a great way to begin an adventure in Maui. The day I took a lesson, only 2 other people were there, along with our instructor Jeremy. Jeremy had a good instructional pace, and while on the beach we learned more about the fish we would see, how to load and fire the speargun (safely), how to breathe properly, and how to dive.
While in the water I took a few practice shots but didn’t get any fish. Even so, I loved the experience. It was my first time spearfishing so I was going more for the how-​to and to challenge myself. I did see a sea turtle who cruised by a couple times. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. Lucky for me, my boyfriend speared a few fish so we barbequed them that night while camping in Hana. Jeremy also prepared sashimi on the beach after our lesson — delicious!

I am writing this review for my husband. I bought him this trip for a wedding present… he had such a great time. We got married last year and he still talks about this part of his trip. He said that Jeremy was great and he would most def do this again. He loved it!

Spearfish Maui is the place for new spearfishers! I’m sure they’re good for advanced folks too, but I can only say that I’d never spearfished before and after my single outing, I feel competent in the basics and am totally hooked! Jeremy gives a good hour of ground training first, teaching breathing techniques and railgun handling. He lets folks go at the pace they need to go, and takes you to an incredible reef that will blow your mind. These guys are the real deal — do this!

If you really want to learn how to spearfish, Jeremy is your guy. The ground instruction is comprehensive, but never boring. Jeremy manages to be thorough while remaining on point, funny, and engaging during ground instruction.
Once you enter the water, Jeremy makes sure everyone is comfortable and ensures people work at their own levels. He can tell whether you’re in the water for a Maui experience or because you seriously want to take up the sport, and either way he encourages you to have the best possible experience.
I went largely because my husband truly wants to learn to spearfish. I was just tagging along. In the end, I had an incredible day snorkeling, and I even murdered a fish!
At the very end, Jeremy tells you how to cook what you caught, which is really key. All told, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Great trip. The instruction was patient and and helpful. Really liked the small group atmosphere, 6 clients to 2 instructors. Would have loved to go on a boat verses off-​shore, but it was still great. Speared one fish, maybe a pound, was stoked.

After a couple of hours of instruction on diving techniques, speargun care and feeding, safety, and fish identification, we headed out to the water.
We were greatly interested in bagging some Roi – an invasive fish that was pretty wily in the reef we visited. We did not succeed in reducing their population, but we had a grand time trying.
The diving instruction was indispensable for the rest of our trip – we went snorkeling five or so more times, and our dives got longer and deeper with a little practice. We also benefitted from good advice on where to buy gear on the island and diving /​spearfishing near our home.

Jeremy at Spearfish Maui is an incredibly knowledgeable guy who ran us through the in’s and out’s of safety, fishing ethics, what to expect, techniques, and how to have the best time in the water. Spearfishing is an age old Hawaiian sport that takes some training to become good at, but within the span of a few hours Jeremy had us in the water and hunting for dinner. My boyfriend and I really wanted to try this sport but were fearful that a large class size would diminish our experience. To our delight Jeremy devoted the entire lesson to just the two of us. While fishing we saw sea turtles, old wharf ruins, and a plethora of fish. I highly recommend this activity to anyone that’s able bodied and looking for adventure. This is a memory that will last us a lifetime and my boyfriend is even wanting to get into the sport in his free time!
