Extremely poor service. Do not recommend at all. My family and I went here for dinner on Sunday after a fancy Christmas concert. We didn’t mind waiting at all since it’s not their fault that they only have seven tables(plus the bar). Once we sat down, we ordered food(my family LOVES sushi). It was a long wait for food but once again we didn’t mind that at all. But we did NOT like that the waitress forgot our miso soup. HOW?! That is the very first thing we should have gotten! Also we never got our water! HOW?! we asked you for water! Food was good. The quality wasn’t bad at all. But we didn’t like that she did not check on us the entire meal. Not a single time she came by to see if we need anything(we were eagerly waiting to tell her that we are still waiting for our water and miso soup…) at one point I asked her(I had to like half way stand up to grab her attention) if she could take a picture for us so we can remember our special meal together. She said«no, I’m busy.» Just like that. I was extremely annoyed because anyone could spare 10 seconds to take a quick photo for a customer! I almost said something to her but did not since that would completely ruin my family’s appetite. When we were done she never gave us the check. In the meanwhile the chef was glaring at us while making sushi as if we were taking up space and aren’t leaving(there were people waiting for tables to open up). But we were eager to pay and GETOUT since we did not enjoy how we were treated at all. We were so annoyed waiting ten minutes just to pay. When she gave us the bill, she included the miso. I asked her to take it off since we never got miso soup! wtf?! I tipped extra well though(20+%) to let them know that I’m better than them. I will never return and would not recommend to anyone who’s looking for a pleasant meal time.

My family and I love kurata. It’s a great restaurant with a very relaxing atmosphere, a good wine selection and amazing Japanese food. Portions are perfect sized so you don’t feel stuffed when leaving. Best Japanese in the lake Oswego area.

8:47. Even though it says Tues-Sat 9:00. Did Unilocal get the hours wrong? Craving for some noodles or something! I’ll update this review when I get a chance to grab a bite.

Have been to Kurata a few times but sit at the bar table the first time yesterday since there were no other tables available. We were enjoying the quiet conversation between us and watching the chef making Sushi sometime. Without any warning, the waitress stopped by and said that the chef was very upset about being watched when he was making Sushi… he didn’t want to serve us! NEVER have experienced this before. Making the chef mad is not a good thing… So no next time.

The sushi here was actually REALLY good. I had the Chirashi –Jyo. The salmon and hamachi were melt in your mouth soft and delicious. Too bad only had one piece each. My wife was happy with her tempura, my son was pleased with his teriyaki chicken breast dinner, but my daughter wasn’t too satisfied with her soba. 4-star for the food(could’ve been closer to 5-star if wasn’t for my daughter not liking her soba too much). I had to order a little bowl of sushi rice($ 3.50) because my Chirashi didn’t have enough(in my opinion should have at least as much rice in the bowl as you would need to make Nigiri sushi for all the pieces of fish that was served) and because I was hungry so maybe value($ 25 for the Chirashi and $ 97 for the entire meal for the 4 of us) wasn’t as great but overall I was satisfied with the food so 4-star rating.

Repeat business a completely different experience: the curt owners were no longer«charming.» Definitely don’t try to bring small children: greeted with icy stares. Never again. Bummer.

I have never encountered an unfriendly Japanese. The yellowtail collar was good but I think the old lady server was prejudiced against other Asians? Not sure but she didn’t smile at me and was acting really ignorant but with the other customers, she forced a fake smile and seemed friendly. Bad customer service.

I had the Tempura shrimp and soba noodle soup, soup was wonderful Tempura was a little too thick, but still very good. My daughter and I split 4 different sushi rolls all were fantastic. Lovely atmosphere and service, I will be back!

Cute little restaurant. Food was excellent. Had some daikon appetizer and bento box. Nothing disappointed. Will definitely be returning.

Small, intimate place next to Safeway. We liked it, but it really wasn’t that great. The rice was cold and could’ve been more tender. We had rolls, but perhaps the sahsimi is better??? We enjoyed our hot appetizers, and they do have a good selection of «boxes.» The server was cordial, and we would return if in the area but wouldn’t make the trek just to dine here.

Came here for an early dinner on a Sunday so it wasn’t crowded at all. Nice and cozy atmosphere inside and the staff is super friendly. My son was a little belligerent, but they seemed to take it stride. I like how the menu wasn’t huge. Straight and to the point with a small selection made it easy to choose. I got the salmon teriyaki. YUMMO. Love that the skin had a nice crisp to it and it wasn’t drenched in sauce. Came bento style with salad, miso and rice. Kids got the usual udon and inhaled it. Hubs got the sashimi and it came with a nice selection. The fish tasted fresh and had nice portion sizes. Food was excellent. Service was exceptional, considering how my son didn’t take a nap and made it known to everyone around us. The wait staff gave us all the extra plates and napkins we needed without blinking an eye. Awesome! We’ll be back(after naptime).

I have been craving sushi since I got pregnant and oh my gosh I’m so glad we found this place. Their Avo Q roll which is a avocado cucumber was delicious and refreshing. Also their tempura shrimp roll with avocado added was so good. Prices are reasonable and just overall delicious.

My husband and I are becoming Kurata regulars! We have eaten at Kurata about once a month since«discovering» this LO gem. We both order the dinners, I get the one with the roll and my husband gets the sashimi. The dinners are a great deal – they come with miso, tempura, salad with a yummy soy ginger dressing, the sushi or sashimi, and maybe other things I’m forgetting for about $ 20. I don’t know if it’s a family owned business but I do know that we have always been served by the the same woman(mom?) and the same man has made our sushi(pop?). This«mom and pop» consistency means that the food and service are dependable – not extraordinary but consistently good. I also feel good supporting this business. It didn’t occur to me to mention this until I read the other reviews: we always arrive at 5 when they open and usually go on Thursday or Friday nights. We have never waited for a table. This is a tiny restaurant and I imagine they fill quickly later in the evening on weekends. I am pretty«judgey» about high quality service and have never had an issue here. «Mom» who has always served us isn’t at all chatty(we’ve been in a dozen times and I’m not entirely certain she recognizes us) but we’ve always had prompt, courteous, professional service from her. I’m surprised other reviewers have had to wait for their food, we’ve never waited long.

I am fortunate to spend a good deal of time in Japan. I believe that this is as close to authentic Japanese food as you’ll find in Portland. It’s a bit pricey, but to me, it’s worth it. Try the gyoza!

We were a bit hesitant to come here after the mixed reviews but after walking around and seeing that we weren’t interested in anything else but sushi, we gave Kurata a shot. The sushi was about $ 10−15/roll and around $ 5⁄2 piece nigiri. To start we had takoyaki and maguro shio(tuna in sweet miso sauce). — Takoyaki was delish and so was the maguro. The maguro came with a side of crunchy cucumber and seaweed which balanced out the tuna very well. The sushi ain’t cheap and this wasn’t a special occasion so we only got one order of hamachi nigiri and 2 rolls(Kurata #2 and dragon roll). The hamachi had beautiful striations of fat. It was a little tough on one end but I liked it that way. The rest of the piece was absolute melt in your mouth buttery and soft. I stared at the rest of my food and thought about ending the meal there. The rolls were delish. The seasoning was so complete, I felt like I was making it too salty by dipping it in soy sauce. It was perfectly good on its own. I know one of the rolls specified that they used real crab, I’m sure it was the same for the other roll. Yes, it’s $ 15 for a roll but it’s real crab and really fresh nori. Between the two of us, we had a satisfying level of food for about $ 66(including tip).

Very cute well decorated place. But beware, there are about 6 tables al Seat 2 or 4 and it fills up fast for dinner. There were 2 people working the dinner rush on a Saturday night which even for a place this small they are crazy. People were cramming as many people as possible at tiny tables. The miso soup was delicious and served at a perfect temperature. I ordered the salmon sushi, the spicy tuna and another sushi I can’t remember What it was. They were really good but for the price I wish it came with a little more. I could have eatn $ 50 in sushi. I was really thirsty drank my water, edged my cup to the end of the table and still didn’t get a refill. I think the waitress was having a melt down with the place overly packed with 3 groups of people waiting to get in. I rate 4 stars for ambiance and quality of the food.

I like the place. It’s neither high end pretentious, nor is it a dingy hole in the wall neighborhood strip-mall style restaurant either. Somewhere in the middle ground. Sushi was very good. I’d say slightly more portion size than a few other places… But not over the top. Only downside I could think of is that the place is very small. I think about 5×4 tops and perhaps 3×2 tops. I had no problems getting a seat at the small counter on a Sunday(eating solo has some advantages), but I’d imagine if I was in a group on a busier evening. I’d try reserve a table or make sure you have a alternate restaurant backup plan!

What a pleasant cute little Sushi place in downtown LO. We walked in with a group on Sunday evening, although the place was full(it’s very small inside) and only one corner table available, staff made sure all of us get seated fast and properly to have enough time to order before they close down. The fish melted in my mouth because it was cut so delicately and not piled in huge chunk. Staff and chefs are friendly native Japanese with excellent customer service. They stayed way over 9pm closing time because we had good time. Definitely order sashimi and Nigiri here, the quality of the fish deserve to be singled out on its own. Love this find!

People in Lake O are cray. For all that is holy, skip this place. The shumai and tuna with sweet miso were the highlights. The sushi wasn’t horrible, but for the price I expected it to be great. Also, it wasn’t busy at all when we came in. We were a party of 2. But we ended up getting our food way later than parties of 3+ that came in after us and ordered more food. Not to mention, I was dying of thirst and every cue for water was ignored/unnoticed. Everything took forever, until we had to pay. Then they couldn’t get our payment fast enough.
