I was very pleasantly surprised with my recent dining experience at Grumpy Jake’s. I love that you can get peanuts in the shell while you’re waiting for your main meal(just ask if they don’t immediately set them down on your table). The brisket was fantastic! Really good barbecue sauce and corn bread. The fries were good as well. The mac and cheese wasn’t my favorite, but it was edible. Huge portions make it worth the price and I appreciated that all of the staff works together to make sure people are cared for. I would definitely go back!

Wanted a small mom & pop diner, nice friendly greeting as you walk in, no grumpy Jake here. Their menu is well thought out and prices are fair. Servers were polite and efficient. Also liked the decorations and music fit the retro style. The pies looked really good but we were so full that we didn’t even think about it. Great food, great service. Tony

It was okay. The ribs were tender but had no flavor. The BBQ sauce helped some but the ribs were very fatty. Okra was delicious, the garlic mashed potatoes were instant and tasted terrible. The white gravy tasted like cardboard, terrible as well. Service was okay. Restaurant is very clean and rustic, very beautiful. However from the food, I wasn’t very thrilled.

I read good reviews about Grumpy Jakes so we took our grandkids there Tuesday night. Service was good, that’s all that was good. Portions were small and pricey Their Ribs were the worst we’ve ever had. All fat and no flavor. The side dishes were small and not worth eating. Save your money and go some where else

Great homemade pies &BBQ. The service was very attentive but not overbearing. A nice touch — the smoky BBQ sauce was served warm in a small cast iron skillet. Our favorite BBQ was the brisket and ribs.

I really love grumpy jakes! It’s just good down home cooking. They have the best fish fry on the mountain for sure in my opinion! That’s mainly what I come for. The fish is fresh and not overly greasy. The fries are great, as well as the homemade chips. Even the beans which are usually basic anywhere you go are exceptional. One surprising side I enjoyed was the zucchini! I’m sure there’s loads of butter in there and that’s why it tastes so good ;) I have had the bbq plate and while it is definitely good, it’s not the best bbq out there. Also minor, but the cornbread they give you isn’t really that worth eating. The pies are decent as well.

We tend to eat here every time we come to Show Low. The food is always good and the staff is always sweet even when they are super busy. Ate here Jan 1st and they were busier than normal, yet still had a great experience! I’m from Texas and I’ve got to say their bbq’ sauce is one of my favorites!

Tried the pulled pork sandwich with fries and it was very good. The sauce was good. I used it for my fries too. The service was very good as well. I will be definitely be trying the ribs next time.

I went to this BBQ place in hopes of getting good meat. I ordered half pound pulled pork and brisket. With a side of bacon wrapped jalapeños to go. The jalapeños were very good, but not for $ 9. The meat was salty and some spices on it that do not taste good with bbq sauce! I am not even sure if the meat was really smoked. I am not even sure what kind of meat they put in the container. If there was brisket, then it looked just like the pulled pork. I didn’t even eat the okra or the zucchini. Dogs got a $ 15 dinner. That meat was not fit for human use.

This is a fun, hole in the wall-ish BBQ place. I really liked the atmosphere and my boyfriend(who grew up in New Jersey) got a kick out of the décor. The service was pretty good. Unfortunately, when small places are busy, often the service suffers. But I didn’t really notice any of that here. I think you have to ask for more cornbread after the initial basket when you get your drinks. As a Texan, you will be hard pressed to get an exceptional review for BBQ pretty much anywhere outside of the state… However, this place was pretty good. I like the sauce and the fried okra. I tried the BBQ sampler which includes brisket, pork, and chicken. I liked a chance to try the variety. I do wish they had provided a balanced amount of each meat(almost no brisket) and there was no divisor of the meats. They were all just plopped on the plate and unless you knew, you wouldn’t know which was pork and which was chicken by look alone… My Jersey born and bred boyfriend really enjoyed his steak. I tasted it and it was well done. They cooked it medium rare the way he asked so it was very tender and the seasoning was nice. He had a side of mac & cheese and he liked it. I don’t know if I would go back myself, but I would recommend the steak, brisket, sauce, and sides to non-Texans…

Well. Had the BBQ Ribs and Brisket combo. Ribs were so so. Got the tip so I did not really get ribs. Got cartilage. Either they get cheap meat or are too cheap to trim the meat. The brisket did not seem like brisket but the taste was fabulous. Really really good! Cowboy beans were not spectacular. Corn bread was nice and moist but lacked flavor. The atmosphere… well not much of one. Parking is plenty but on dirt and rock. Potholes. If it was raining would be swimming in mud. Would I go back? I did enjoy the brisket but there must be other choices that I would try 1st.

Each year we spend a week in Show Low & have enjoyed BBQ here. This year we Googled their site to confirm they would be open. Their website said open until 9:00. We got there @ 6:30& were told they closed at 6:00, even though their window sign said 7:00. Very confusing and disappointing.

Nice family style BBQ restaurant. Wide variety of menu items. What is really good is the fact that they have a lot of non BBQ offerings for those few people who don’t like BBQ. Sigh. We’ll be back!

I’m not super impressed. It may be that I’m a Texas native, but the BBQ was on the low side of moderate for me and the portions were a lot smaller than I’m used to for a BBQ joint. The sides were adequate. Nothing was bad, just not what I would classify as good. We split an appetizer and a sampler plate and it was $ 30. Service was good.

Service was very good, staff were friendly. The food was ok(ribs, brisket, pulled pork but the BBQ sauce was good. However, it was very difficult to eat and swat away flies at the same time. They need to get rid of their fly problem… we had 3 – 4 of them swarming around our table the entire time. They were also around our waitress so I don’t think this is something no one was aware of.

I cannot lie. Grumpy Jakes has THEBESTRIBS I have EVER had!!! The service was superb and the environment/décor was fun. I love that they serve drinks in mason jars. The salads were good too! They make their own barbecue sauce, which is SO edible! I also had the pleasure of meeting the owners — they were very friendly, down-to-earth people. I recommend this place to anyone! We’ve been there a few times and even hosted a community meeting in the loft area. If you’re in town, you gotta try it out!!!

Was in town and decided to drop by and try it out. The service is extremely nice! Very friendly and attentive people. The Piglet is a sampler served on a garbage can lid. It was nice, got a good selection of stuff. The Bacon Wrapped Jalepenos were to die for! The fries and onion rings were also very good. The ribs and brisket are both very flavorful, even without the sauce. I wasn’t a big fan of the sauce, the ribs in particular are very tender and flavorful alone. The brisket was tender and flavorful as well. Fried Corn is corn that is lightly battered then fried in a pan I think? or deep fried, it was good except most of hte coating was not on the corn by the time it was served. Overall, it was worth eating at.

Food took over an hour to come out. When we got the food it was not worth the wait. Unless you have hours to kill and like microwaveable food this isn’t the place for you.
