I don’t believe in that there exist something both cheap and good, until I came here. I am amazed by how fresh the food is, it is simply the best sushi place in Lansing if you are looking for good quality of food material. Because the very core of the good food is fresh of the food material, this goes the same with sushi. I appreciate the Tamaki Sushi didn’t abandon this essential rule. However if the dishes could look better, and the environment could look less like a fast food joint, it would be he best sushi place in America.

I love this place and the concept! I love being able to choose what goes into the sushi roll, it allows for endless possibilities. The rolls I ordered were very tasty and the staff were very friendly and accommodating. I also love the casual environment, it means that I can bring my toddler with me without stressing about him sitting still in a fancier sushi restaurant. Definitely a do-again!

Food is less than mediocre. They have several locations but ambience is poor at all of them.

There are a ton of things wrong with this place. To start off, the raw fish is literally just in little bins in the refrigerated countertop. Gross. Secondly, the workers use the same gloves to pick up the fish, vegetables, containers in the fridge, etc. And then they touch your food with those gloves as well – even raw food. Talk about cross-contamination! Do you know how many bacteria grow on those gloves from the fish? A lot. Third, the miso soup had almost no taste – I didn’t even finish it, and it’s one of my favorites. Fourth, the house salad ended up as more of a soupy gingery mess with absolutely no flavor. Fifth, the sushi was cheap but did not taste good. Will NOT be going back and urge you to do the same.

As a former employee of Tamaki Custom Sushi and Wraps of about 2.5 years, I am here to tell you something that you will not believe. QUALITYSUSHIFORLIKEHALFTHEPRICETHATYOUWOULDGETDININGOUTFORSUSHIOMG!!! Everything is always prepped fresh and everything is always kept clean. We had strict rules to follow there. So don’t be fooled by it being so small and cozy! Another thing, there are only so many things that your chef can work on at once. Considering they have many things on the menu, aside from sushi, there is a lot to do. Tamaki offers gyoza dumplings, side salads, miso soup, you can tempura fry any roll you want. We have organic kale salads, edamame, and so on. The way tamaki works: Think of it as a subway for sushi. It is just one long bar where you have someone building your roll right in front of you. So, it is really cool because you can actually see what the chef is putting into your roll, and you’re also getting the experience to watch it be made. I love this place simply because I am so picky about my sushi. Some places you go and you’re like, «Oh that roll sounds awesome if it didn’t have ___in it» or «Oh that roll would be so great with this, this and this added to it!» — well that is exactly what tamaki is for. CUSTOM sushi.

Good music, pretty respectable fish, very nice choice of veggies to go in your creation, and friendly staff. Overall I would recommend this place, give it a try and try not to go in peak hours. Stop reading here if that’s all you want to know. The negatives. The bathroom occasionally looks like a demilitarized zone. The folks have not quite figured out how to do an assembly line set up, this leads to a line that just absolutely creeps. Most of the staff is quite friendly, though there is one older gentlemen who works there that is a fairly large jerk. They also need to work on the vegetable policy. I get the rice bowl and they are bound and determined not to let me get extras on that even for an additional fee. Figure that out will you? One last thing. They used to do groupons, have not seen them for awhile. They kept me coming in though. Bringing those back would be great.

Friendly, fast and delicious sushi and rice bowls –what more do you need? Some people call this fast food sushi. I think that’s unfair just because they have a limited menu and assemble it similar to subway style doesn’t make it fast food; it’s delicious fun and affordable. When you need a quick, yummy sushi or rice bowl fix stop in —- you won’t be disappointed.

Went here for lunch a few days ago and we both got custom rolls. They were delicious and I love the options for fillings! Service was a little slow I think because one of the employees was serving about four of her friends and talking a lot. Other than that, great spot for unique rolls!

It’s like Subway, for Sushi. Bulgogi wraps were tasty. Make your own sushi isn’t any cheaper than just ordering at a sushi restaurant though.(they charge per protein… and some cost extra) I’ve been a few times and the quality is generally quite good, but we tried the miso soup last time and it tasted like the tofu had spoiled(or maybe somebody put vinegar in it?). Fortunately, we got a refund.

I am absolutely blown away by the customer service here. As I ordered my daughter was behind me with her McDonald’s. She’d never eat sushi, and informed the man behind the counter that she thought I was crazy for liking it. He rose to the challenge. He grinned, said, «I can make you sushi that tastes like a hamburger.» He proceeded to put together a beautiful little meat and cheese sampler for her that she popped into her mouth and loved. That’s service you remember. Besides, the food is fantastic. :)

My second visit was way better than my first… second time the staff behind the counter was much more attentive and helpful. There’s a nice variety of options to customize your order. I have tried the beef, chicken, and shrimp each in a separate bbq wrap aka burrito. The beef is by far the best of those three. Probably gonna try some tuna or spicy tuna next time. You have to make sure they actually glob the wasabi on your wrap… they merely smear a negligible amount assuming you can’t handle the punch. Definitely a nice addition and a must visit if you like sushi!

I absolutely love Tamaki. I go here about once a week. It’s really the only place in the area that you can get custom made sushi quickly. In regards to the price, I think many of the other reviews are a little misguided. For a custom seaweed wrap with one protein and four other add ons, plus sauce(usually about 8 large pieces) it’s $ 6.00. You cannot beat that price in the area, not even at Meijer. Yes, there is additional cost when you add on other proteins, but this is to be expected. Although it is similar in style to a Subway, they actually use fresh ingredients such as fresh fish that is not inexpensive. I think the price is perfect for the style of restaurant and the market it’s in. I usually get the Spicy Tuna or Spicy Salmon and both are just amazing. They have Shitake Mushroom, which I had never had on sushi before but am now obsessed with. I also love their Miso Soup. The staff is very friendly. They even let me pay with a check once when I had forgotten my wallet at home. The place is very clean. They also do a punch card, so their frequent customers do feel appreciated. Overall, I hope they keep expanding because its an awesome concept.

This is Subway-style assembly line fast food for sushi rolls. I think it’s a pretty brilliant concept, even though I’m not enough of a sushi expert to come in knowing everything I want in a roll. The staff is great at making recommendations to help indecisive types like me. They’re very friendly and helpful in a low-key way, and they’ll guide you through the building process to point you to interesting combos. If you stick to a basic roll, it’s very reasonably priced. Downright cheap, actually. Adding more fish — I’m sorry, «proteins»(which include chicken, pulled pork, tofu, mushrooms and for some reason, sweet potatoes) — quickly moves your meal into pricier territory, especially since there are confusing cost strata for certain«premium» proteins, rolls vs. wraps vs. bowls, tempura frying, premium toppings, etc. Luckily, most of the more unique options are not considered premium. So if you’ve ever wanted to combine three traditional sauces on a pulled pork roll and top it off with spicy cheetos for crunch, the world is your oyster. Or tuna. Or spicy salmon. Tip: If you’re a ginger lover, or just appreciate a modern spin on the traditionalism of ginger as a sushi companion, GETTHEBOTTLEDGINGERALE. At $ 3 it’s more expensive than the refillable fountain drinks, but completely and utterly worth it.

3.5÷5(bumped up to 4 for what’s available in Lansing) This is one of the first Korean/Japanese«fast food» restaurants I’ve encountered where you can customize your meal(sushi rolls, wraps or rice bowls). It’s definitely a great concept for those who are looking for something not too authentic. I ordered a bulgogi wrap with various fillers(kimchi, avocado, spinach, shredded cheese and special gochujang sauce) and it turned out pretty good. There are other meats and tons of fillers to choose from which is a plus. The drinks are free refills, which is also a plus in my book. However, the price was a little steep for what you get, but I guess that’s where the unique factor comes into play. All and all, a neat place for some quick Asian fusion. I can’t comment on the rice bowl or sushi rolls so I’m not sure if their sashimi is fresh.
