Came back to Florida just in time to see them tear down the building! Senior Loco’s R.I.P.

We went here last week for lunch. I had the ample and yummy taco salad. I can’t complain. Our waitress was superb. She refilled our drinks before they ever went halfway down. Very attentive. The taco salad was really good but not quite as perfectly done as the other Mexican place down the road. I won’t say the name here… Ok, Los Mariachis… is the better place for lunch. But the chips and salsa are better at Señor Locos. Better waitress service too. I can’t complain. I love Mexican food. It’s terrific almost everywhere!

I agree with Felipe’s article that it’s not authentic Mexican food. one has to go to Mexico for that most of the time. Having lived and worked in the Mission in San Francisco, I came across a variety of wonderful eating establishments which offered ‘family style’ meals albeit with a twist for the American’s palate. Señor Loco is definitely a step up from Chevy’s. I’ve suffered through some horrendous ‘Mexican’ restaurants in my travels with weak salsas and uninspiring dishes. I actually liked the very hot salsa I asked for. the four Enchiladas Supremas were quite tasty and it came(extra) with guacamole and sour cream. The karaōke singing is worth a few Negro Modelos or one of their mojitos. And no, I shall not get up there unless I can sing Vaya Con Dios either. House chips are good, house salsa is weak. not a bad spot in Largo to have a decent meal while trying out one’s repertoire of songs at the karaōke machine.

From the reviews of their first location in Clearwater I was expecting the worse for this newly opened Señor Locos located in Largo Mall. Good Mexican food is hard to find in Pinellas, so I’m pretty much willing to give any place a shot. Maybe it was the lowered expectations, but the food ended up being pretty alright. Let me clarify that first statement, this isn’t real authentic Mexican cuisine, it is Americanized Tex-Mex, and when put into that context Señor Locos does about as well as any other similar place. The two dishes I have had that are Shrimp Quesadilla and the the Vegetarian Option 2 which includes a Bean Burrito, Cheese Enchilada and rice. The Shrimp Quesadilla used good cheeses in it that that part tasted really good — I think I tasted Asadero melting Cheese and a little Cotija, but the Shrimp were small and boiled with little or no seasoning or spice. The Vegetarian platter was much better with very straight ahead flavors that were simple but good. The red ranchero sauce was made better with some hot sauce and the cheese enchilada was alright. The rice however was pretty disappointing. It tasted like something out of a box with little flavor except for saltiness. The house torilla chips are spot on, but the house salsa is simply too watery with very little heat. Some more spice, onion and cilantro flavor would make everything so much better. They have a lengthy 2 for 1 happy hour and serve Dos Equis and Modelo Especial on draft which was a tasty compliment to the meal. My general feeling is that Locos would do in a pinch if you have a craving for Tex-Mex, but I don’t think I’ll ever find myself craving Señor Loco’s specifically. The food is on the level of a chain Tex Mex place like On the Border or Chevys. As a semi-generic Mexican restaurant it’s perfectly adequate, and sadly in Pinellas county where there aren’t many alternatives it is as good a choice as any.
