The Los Compas cafes in Las Cruces have a good long standing reputation. I think the cafes are run by various family members. We are loyal customers of all the cafes. But we probably will not return to the Commerce location. Yesterday five of us went to this location for lunch. We were given a basket of chips and salsa. There were probably only ten chips total. We asked for more. They said there would be a charge. If we had had a decent amount in the first place, the charge would not be an issue. My daughter ordered a green smothered burrito. This usually comes with green enchilada sauce. Hers was covered with a very watery green chile meat. When questioned, the waitress said that is the way they do it. So we asked for a small amount of green enchilada sauce. Of course, she said there would be a charge. We asked to speak with the manager. Even though it was lunch time, and the busiest time of the day, the manager was not there. So they decided to take a picture of the burrito for the manager. Customers do not come first at this restaurant.

Salsa was good… should’ve gotten a cup to go to use at taco bell. The fajita burritos special was not so special, slimy with not much flavor. Good staff, though!

I will never return. We had a very long wait for food, 35 minutes. There was a large party in the back and they were not staffed to handle it apparently. The person who seated us neglected to tell us that there would be a delay in getting our meals, which they really should have done since there was clearly going to be more than a thirty minute wait after placing our order. After waiting 25 minutes a server let us know they had a big party and our food would be out soon. No mention of the word sorry at that point. When the food came to the table, the order was incomplete. I told the server she need not bother bringing the remaining food at that point. My order was a mess. The enchilada had been assembled so quickly that the tortilla was dripping in oil and it had not even been warmed enough to melt the cheese inside or out, it was cold inside. The relleno was the same, it was not just cool in the middle it was cold. The beans and rice were good, I’m guessing because they were already prepared. The server never came to check until after we were done, I told her that the food was cold and she did apologize. She did take the bill back and adjusted one of the meals, but it really was pointless as after the poor service, because they were short staffed and unfit food, we would not return. After living in Las Cruces for 25 years, and eating at the other Compas locations, I could not believe what a failure this meal was. I understand why the reviews are low at this location. I’d avoid this place at all costs.

Best smothered burrito I’ve ever had!!! Green chili is hot and so good! Atmosphere is very nice. Even the chips and salsa are good.

Very disappointing. We had just arrived in Las Cruces for a medical treatment and this was close by. We got the fajitas and the meat was tough and chewy and the guacamole was watered down. The waitstaff seemed like they were drugged and out of it, and quite blasé. The atmosphere is lackluster. We all felt sick after we ate here. Avoid if you can!

Food was served warm. Carne adovado had one large piece of fat… really would not bother. There are too many good restaurants in the area. Really an unhappy experience.

I was in town on business for two weeks, staying just a block away from Los Compas, and I probably ate dinner there 8 times or so. Delicious, simple, honest Mexican food. Nothing glamorous, but you don’t pay glamorous prices either. I highly recommend the steak picado. Add an over-easy egg on top, and you have a meal worth writing about… Which is where I find myself currently. The waitstaff is excellent and attentive. They remembered me and my order each time I returned. Just phenomenal. If you come to Las Cruces, do yourself a favor, and stop by Los Compas.

The food here is average for the area, however what makes this place a 2 is the SLOW service. Any time of day, regardless of how busy they are, it takes a minimum of an hour to eat and get out. If your not in a hurry, or have lots of time on your hands, this place is for you!

What can I say… I needed to burn some time and I was hungry. Never ate here before so thought I would give it a try. I was not dissapointed. Food was great. Service was wonderful. I will be eating here again. Maybe soon.

We’ve eaten at Los Compas many times, especially lunch and dinner at the original location on Nevarez. We’ve always found it decent(especially the carne adovada) and it is definitely inexpensive. This review concerns my recent breakfast experience at the Commerce location. Simply put, it was perhaps the worst breakfast I have ever had. For starters, the breakfast menu was very limited, consisting of burritos and a few egg dishes. I was in the mood for some spicy authentic Mexican so I ordered the machaca. Machaca is supposed to be a moist and savory shredded or pounded beef and it is often served in fluffy scrambled eggs for breakfast. So, that’s what I ordered. The meal started with chips and salsa, which I love for breakfast. But, the salsa was unusually flavorless and very watery. It was so watery I really could not get any good chilies on my chips, which made me sad. But then I got even sadder when my meal arrived. The plate consisted of 4 ingredients: the eggs/meat scramble and refried beans with a few cheese shreds on top. The beans were decent, and as it turned out this was all I really ate. The big disappointment was the machaca. Instead of moist glistening fluffy eggs mixed with savory shredded beef, perhaps with some added zing such as onions or jalapenos, instead what I got was a hard piece of leather – seriously. It took one look at the eggs to see how the whole terrible meal unfolded. The eggs had been well beaten and poured onto the grill over some dry shredded beef. Then, the cook just let it sit there until it was brown underneath and then flipped like a pancake until the other side was brown. So, what I got was a totally dried out overcooked disk of egg and meat. It could not be eaten with a fork. Indeed, my knife could not really even cut it apart. My guess is that the cook(and obviously the manager too) has no idea what a properly cooked scrambled egg is supposed to look like. Good thing Gordon Ramsey did not walk in this day.

After running some errands in town, we decided to give one of the Los Compas restaurants a try for lunch. The interior décor is very nice. I had the gordita plate and my wife had the chicken fajitas plate. Both lunches were good, but I have had better gorditas in town. The chicken fajitas plate was actually better tasting then my entrée. Service was just okay, but other tables with a different waiter/waitress seemed to fare better. Nothing happened that would keep us from returning again to one of their locations.
