Their cupcakes blow away anything in DC, especially considering they are $ 1.25 each. We almost always stop on the way home to PA from DC and make a quick trip to grab one(ok, maybe a dozen). My mom doesn’t even like desserts and she even loves their stuff. We ordered our wedding cake from here and hoping it’s as good, will report back on that in November. The cakes are more expensive than the cupcakes(seems disproportionality so but maybe that’s just me, I haven’t actually calculated it out nor accounted for anything other than initial impression). The staff and service has always been fine, sometimes they get a little busy, for instance we had some delays during the wedding cake tasting, but they always get what is needed and its a quick in and out trip to pickup. This is one of the only things I miss after moving from Laurel down to VA.

Cakes Plus is a fantastic place to go if your expectations are not very high. While the generic cupcakes they sell for like $ 4 each are actually pretty decent, if you want an exquisite cake or something that has a lot of details to it, this is not the right place for you to go. I had two cakes specially made by them for my husband’s retirement from the United States Navy back in April. One was done decently well — had the US Navy Crest on it as well as a fouled anchor, indicating he was retiring as a Chief. The other one was supposed to have snowflakes and ladybugs on it — it looked like something my 10 year old niece put together. I could have done a better job myself. On the whole though if you’re in a rush and on a very tight budget, this is the place for you. I would not get a wedding cake made here.

I special ordered a 40th birthday day cake for my hubby and the artist designed it perfectly! I had to hug her! It was delicious too! Oohs and Aahs abound!

Nothing special… just okay. I usually like the yellow cake with vanilla buttercream cupcake. They definitely don’t taste homemade unless your idea of homemade is Duncan Hines boxed cake mix. It’s not bad, just know what to expect. My last visit cost them a star. I only liked the«special of the week» which costs $ 2 more than their regular prices and was pretty much the vanilla/yellow cake with toasted coconut and a hint of pineapple. The other cupcakes were cold, as if they had just come out of the freezer. The cake tasted dense and wet… not fresh at all. The icing had the consistency of a block of butter right out of the fridge. I really should have taken them back, but it was late so I decided to dump them instead.

I ordered a dozen and a half cupcakes for my niece’s tea party birthday celebration. The cupcakes were ready for pick up, they took my credit card info over the phone. The cost $ 25, which was not bad. This is partly, because I kept the frills to a minimum, because they charge extra for just about everything. Half of the cupcakes were vanilla with vanilla butter crème frosting, the other half had strawberry flavoring added for a charge of $ 4. Oh let me remember, yes the colored sprinkles were free. Slightly overrated by people who may not get out on the cupcake scene very much. I was expecting the cake portion of the strawberry cupcake to be pink with lots of strawberry flavor, instead it was just a liquid flavoring with a hint of strawberry to taste, so when we got the cupcakes we did not know which ones were strawberry or vanilla. In other words, the flavoring was not really worth the additional charge. The cupcakes were for the most part decent. The cupcake icing stood up in 80⁄90 degree weather outdoors without melting or buckling. The staff was nice and although there was a number of people in the store, I didn’t have to wait long to be served. Cakes Plus seems reliable, a bakery with quick service down packed.

Im not gonna lie, this place is BOMB! But only in taste. they have decent decorating skills and less than good customer service skills. Poor customer service is the only reason this review has only 3 stars.

Horrible experience. Ordered a cake, went to pick up cake and it had several cracks in the middle of it. I asked them to fix it… they said they couldn’t as no one was there to fix it. So… I ordered a cake for a hundred and some odd dollars a week in advance only to have them ruin the party with no cake. Then to add insult to the situation, she offers a partial refund. How do you not quality control your items? Especially when people pick up the same day. Brides beware! They were unapologetic about the matter and had an «oh well» attitude about it. No customer service. Tacky to say the least. Go to Costco if need be just don’t go here. The artwork was garbage and looked like an arts and craft project a kindergarten class. This place needs to just go out of business.

I have had several cupcakes an cakes from Cakes Plus but earlier this month was the first time that I had actually been to the store. I never knew that it was where it was. I picked a round cake from the case and a cupcake to go. It was my birthday! We were having a Super Bowl/birthday party in my honor(my husband paid for the cake). I ate the cupcake on the way to our next stop — yellow cake with white icing. It was great. The cake was delicious on Super Bowl Sunday — not so much the next day. I had maybe 3 slices left of the cake. It was still in the box, securely closed and taped up on my dining room table. I’m not sure how old the cake was originally BUT the day after we purchased it ITWASHARD and not enjoyable. Pretty sad because, I had a small taste of the cake at the party and I was planning on eating a heartier piece on my actual birthday. Lucky for me, we had other desserts that were left over and I enjoyed them instead.

I have been coming here for years ! This place is very popular so it tends to be over crowed all the time for the cupcakes and cakes. The taste to me is moist and the frosting is good. I prefer vanilla butter cream. I forgot to take a picture of cupcake before I ate it to post . The staff: Today I placed an order at the very same time I received some not so good news before walking through the door. The young lady who took my order took me to the side, gave me plenty of tissue and took her time with me. When all was done she gave me a sincere hug and gave me words of encouragement that I will remember. There are still good hearted, color blind people in the world.

Their service is not personable at all. I’ve only been here for the cupcakes but I wouldn’t want to order a cake for a special occasion from the employees there. Just order takers who flip through books & ring you up. On the other hand… their cupcakes are delicious! They taste just like you imagine a cupcake should taste when you attempt to make your own… the icing is done in a perfect amount, the moisture is just right and they have basic flavors all the time: Chocolate/white frosting Vanilla/chocolate frosting Chocolate/chocolate frosting Vanilla/white frosting Red velvet Flavor of the month. Really tasty!

Absolutely love the cupcakes as they are fresh daily. So in love with the cupcakes we ordered a full sheet for a birthday party. Spent almost $ 200 on decorations, toys etc… we were thoroughly disappointed with the cake. It tasted as though it had been sitting around the bakery for a week prior to our party. The icing had developed a hard crust and the cake was so dry our guest couldn’t choke it down. We threw most of it away. The service really is horrendous as someone else mentioned. They ignore you and go to the back kitchen then take a couple phone calls before even acknowledging that you are standing at the counter. So the moral of the story is if you have time to spare and need cupcakes this is your place!

Well I’ve been to Cake Plus numerous times but today was the first time Ive had dry cupcakes from there. Tasted like they may have not been covered well or got freezer burned. Definitely didn’t feel or taste fresh. I saw another reviewer say they got dry cupcakes and I thought wow thats never happened to me when Ive visited. But today was the day. A waste of 7 bucks! If I order again I will just order 1 and see if this was just a fluke.

It’s my birthday and I’m hankering for lemon cake. On the way home from brunch I decided to stop here because I’ve heard good reviews about their made to order cakes. I’ve actually had some of their cake at a friend’s party and it was good so I assumed the cupcakes would be good too. WRONG! They looked plain and of low quality in the display case in comparison to places like crumbs or hello cupcake. But I pick up 6 anyway. I get home and bite into it and omg it tastes horrible. Stale, old, nasty. I toss it in the trash and immediately wash my mouth out with water. The other 5 will get trashed too. It was something about the way that«betty crocker» can looking icing looked that should have made me not buy them in the first place.

Cakes Plus has been a staple in MD for years WAY before the cupcake craze swept Washington. The cakes are some of the best in the DMV and the cupcakes are some of the best in the DMV. When I lived in Bowie I would come here to get sweets for birthdays, graduations(and for my high school graduation my parents got a cake from here). The store is small and it is a little confusing when you first come in but the line starts on the right just so you know.

This review is mainly about the cupcakes! I pass this place often and every now and then I feel the need for a cupcake. Today was my 5th time I have been in Cake Plus since I have moved to Laurel 5 years ago. Unfortunately, the service is the 1st turn off as you walk in the door and face one of the disgruntle workers. It has never failed that each time I walk into this place the employee either acts like they don’t see you or isn’t pleasant at all. Geesh, I didn’t think it would be that hard to order two cupcakes. Moving forward to the taste: I must forget what they taste like every year and return in hopes that the cupcakes will someday mysteriously find moisture. The red velvet cupcake was absolutely horrible. It was dry and tasted as if it should have been on the«day old» shelf. After taking a bite of the red velvet cupcake I was hesitant to try the vanilla. Fortunately, the vanilla cupcake was somewhat better with more flavor and moisture. Overall, when I pass Cake Plus again and experience a lapse in memory about this experience, I will pinch myself and change directions to another local bakery.
