I order from Jade Garden almost every Sunday night, so not too long ago I started kind of randomly ordering stuff off of the authentic Chinese menu just to branch out and experiment, and try new things. What I learned is that the authentic Chinese menu is where it’s AT. My favorite thing on it is the Beijing Zha Jiang Mein. It’s basically spag bol, but Beijing-style with a rich sauce made of ground pork, plum sauce, garlic, and fermented sweet/sour black bean paste — it’s sweet, salty, spicy, and has tons of swooningly good brain-satisfying umami flavor — all in a really great balance with each other. The sauce is spooned over round wheat noodles much like pasta, then topped with a big spoonful of pickled garlic that you will probably smell before the delivery guy manages to knock. There are handfuls of fresh crunchy cucumber, carrot, and sprouts scattered around the periphery of the dish, and having bites with cold crisp crunchy to alternate with the darkly rich sweet/spicy/savory sauce and chewy noodles is really nice(I actually also order a side of cucumber salad so I don’t run out of crunch). Warning: do NOT order the western equivalent off the non-authentic menu, I did that one night(the Americanized stuff is cheaper, I was curious) and it was not good. They left out everything that makes the sauce great and it didn’t have the fresh crunchy veggies. Which I guess might make it taste better to some people but I can’t imagine. I ended up throwing the whole box out, chalked it up to experience, and made sure to order the Beijing Zha Jiang Mein off the authentic menu the next time. All the flavors, all the textures. I totally recommend it — it’s cheerful Chinese grandma makes you comfort food kind of food. Delicious!

Tried to bring a bunch of people to drink $ 5 shots and have a great time… They acted like were scum of the earth and had us leave

I have been eating in and having delivery for years… quality ebbs and flows… but last two orders the chicken tasted funny and I have gotten sick within two hours after eating their food… never again…

I have been a customer at Jade Garden for over 10 years and I have to say I’m sad to write this review. The last couple of times I ate here I was more than disapointed. The chicken was fatty and barely edible.

Ordered egg drop soup –a quart to go, yesterday, based on past experience with the restaurant(15 years) but it was completely tasteless, watered down, the egg bits had no flavor. Even my 16 year old couldn’t eat it — had to feed it to the garbage disposal. Can only guess that they had watered it down after many hours on the stove, just awful. Also ordered Pad Thai which was fine. Overall this place is not as good as Thai-Siam. If you can stand the rush hour waits and the attitude there, Thai Siam is hands down the best Chinese/Thai restaurant in Lawrence. Jade Garden’s food quality has steadily diminished over the last 15 years, but generous serving sizes make for cheap eats.

lol. How could you give this place 1 star!!! WT??? Michelle, you is CRAZY! I don’t know what Melissa was eating/smoking ;), but try some of the other stuff on the menu! The average American usually sticks to the basics: Low mein, fried rice etc… there’s so much more to their restaurant. This is one of my favorite«Chinese/Asian» restaurants. The General Tso’s is AMAZING. The Hot and Sour soup is the BEST. Try their Vietnamese noodles too… really good. They have a rice porridge that I would get for my wife and I when we would get sick. so good. This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. PS: I am Asian(well, half). You should take my word for it.

Places like this — as a representation of Lawrence’s chinese fair — are the reason why I have repeatedly asserted that Lawrence Chinese food sucks. It’s overly fried, overly grease, and incredibly cheap. I suppose this combination = go-to fair as a KU student, but I’d rather not eat than eat this. Grocery chinese food should NOT be better than an actual restaurant, but it is. That’s just plain sad.
