Cedar Rock Railroad

Love it! Super affordable and just the right amount of time on the train for little ones! We go about once every couple months and have a great experience every time!

This place was the perfect spot to kill some time before cave spelunking at Inner Space! My son is 7 and still really enjoyed himself on the train ride. The playground was geared to younger kiddos though.
It was really affordable. 2.50 per person, cash and credit accepted!

This is a must do for families in the area! It is so adorable! Here’s the scoop:
–The Cedar Rock Railroad if a fun place. They have a little railroad town to play in. It is ok to run around and play before and after your train ride. There’s even plenty of picnic tables to camp out at for an al fresco lunch that you brought along.
–The engine is a really nice looking miniature replica of an old fashioned steam engine. I’m not a train nut, but my father in law is. He was in love with the engine. I think he took 2 dozen pictures!
–The train ride itself is 1.5 miles long. It winds along a path through the Williamson County Park, so it is a pretty ride. It lasts about 15 – 20 minutes. It is only $ 2.50 a person as well. It is a really nice ride and worth $ 2.50 any day.
–There’s a small snack concession shop at the depot. The snacks are cheap and affordable. No meal food, just snacks though, so don’t go planning on buying lunch.
–They are currently open year round. They do have a website though that updates their current schedule. I recommend you check it before you drive out there, just to be safe. Here it is
–The railroad is located at the back of the park, if you are entering off of Sam Bass Road. There are signs along the way once you are in the park. It is a bit far in the back and a bit hidden, so don’t give up once you are in the park.
–They take cash or credit at the depot. Yay!
I’m so happy I found Cedar Rock Railroad. I know we will be back many times for a fun picnic and train ride.

Cedar Rock Railroad is a family-​friendly concession inside the Southwest Williamson County Regional Park. They offer a narrow-​gauge railroad that gives a great narrated scenic overview of the park and associated amenities that can be interesting for all ages. There’s also a nifty little hand-​propelled «Train Chase» attraction for little kids. Additionally, there’s a small playground with a train-​themed activity area and picnic tables.
The grounds and facilities are well-​kept. A small concession stand offers snacks. I didn’t recall seeing any drinks, so remember to bring those with you. You can buy tickets to ride the two attractions either a la carte, or as part of a package that includes reservations for parties.
The biggest disadvantage is that there are no nearby restrooms. The closest restroom involves a 10 minute hike to one of the pavilions near the soccer fields. If you’re just here for a train ride and done, you can hold it. But if you’re here for a two-​hour birthday party, that’s asking a bit much, especially with toddlers. Adults might want to consider a trip in the woods for relief. It would also be nice to be able to wash hands after changing diapers before handling food.
Another concern I had was the exposure of the play areas to the narrow-​gauge train. While the station itself is well-​fenced, children may be tempted to run after the train as it leaves the station, which happened more than once while I was there. While parental supervision is important, little ones can often outthink you. I found myself as a single adult trying to stop others’ children from danger. You can check my posted video (available only on mobile as of this writing) to see just how quickly this can happen. This seems like a liability that should be addressed before someone gets injured or maimed.
I appreciate the patience of the staff with the little ones’ exuberance for all things train. However, at one point – again due to insufficient fencing – some of the little ones went around to sit on the train chase ride cars. Let’s just say the head choo-​choo got a little vocal and scoldy, almost taking on a law enforcement tone. The little ones didn’t see what they were doing as wrong, since they were here to have fun and the toys were out. Again, the parents probably facilitated the kiddos’ «offenses» a bit as well. But staff should realize the limitations of their setup and be more understanding in such circumstances. If you don’t want to run a full-​length fence, you should expect things like this will happen from time to time. Either put up the toys after each use, or be chill when the kids take advantage of them.
All-​in-​all, it’s a great time for kids and parents alike. Go here, by all means, and enjoy. Just be prepared with supplies and for the gotchas that come with this simple limited amenity attraction. It ain’t Disney, it ain’t Six Flags. But it’s still good, clean fun.
If you can find a place to wash your hands, that is.

I would give them 5 stars but the lack of bathrooms close by was a buzz kill when you have 30 three year olds! Make sure you bring cash or a check because they do not except debit/​credit cards.
Now the train itself was awesome and the kids as well as myself enjoyed it! It was about a 10 minute ride through some trees and fields. BRING YOUR BUG SPRAY!
If you eat at the picnic tables bring a table cloth or wipes as they are outside under trees.

This is our favorite place to take our kids (3.5 yrs and 9 months). We’ve been bringing the older one here since he was a baby. Now there is even more for him to play before and after the train. I recommend it to everyone in the neighborhood.

Been coming here since my son was 3 he is now 7 and we come at least once a month. Great value and a lot of fun for kids. The also decorate the tunnel at Halloween too!

Well where do I begin?
First, as I drove into the parking lot, I thought, well isn’t this the cutest thing? My son noticed the RR x sign almost immediately and was super excited to ask if we were going to ride a train somewhere (I didn’t tell them what we were doing because quite frankly I wasn’t planning on coming here today. Although it was on my to do list for sure!!)
We get out of the car and walk up towards the train station which houses a very cute little shop where they sell some snacks and waters and where you purchase your tickets. The gentlemen selling tickets and snacks was just as sweet and nice as could be… I’m going to assume he is the father of one of the owners. Just assuming. Being a newbie here I had a couple of questions and they were all so very eager to answer them and were excited about telling me about the new ride they have called the crank cars… They explained that the cars run opposite of the train since the conductor of the train is also the host of the crank cars. So as soon as the train comes back he does two rounds of crank cars; each round is 4 minutes. Then it’s time for another train ride!
So now our fun begins!
We go look at the crank cars while waiting for the train to leave… Gosh how fun is this? And exercise for the little ones! Its a win win in my book by far! Oh and only $ 2ea? Even better! OK… Choo choo… Time get on the train… we are coming back for sure for those cars. :-) but let’s enjoy the ride first!
Alllll abbboaard says the conductor and he comes by to punch your tickets! That part just tickled me. Reminded me of the polar express (which I love and watch about oh… I dunno 20 times a year)… Choooo choooo time to go. We a start moving the smiles came to life on my kiddos’ face. It was great…
Moving around the first corner we are immediately engulfed in nature. Trees all around. Birds. Locusts. Grasshoppers. You can hear them all. Beautiful serene setting. So shady. So peaceful. Whoa mommy look … DEER. Look look… I see some deer!!! Yep… As I’m trying to get the camera. Lol. They are beautiful. 4 or 5 of them. Here comes the tunnel. A lovely makeshift tunnel that awed my little ones something wonderful! It was great. As we came out we started coming back around to the front of the park and we passed a beautiful pond and eventually back into the train station. It was fantastic. OK. Now its time for the cars.
Let’s go get our tickets for the crank cars. Can’t leave without checking those out!
Walk in and line up. As the «conductor» unlocks a box… like magic…3 more cars roll out. You can hear all the kids. «Ahhhh haaaaa wow» so cute. They are all so very excited.
They are told the rules and now its ready to ride! Let’s get these cars a rolling youngins!
And they’re off! One circle at a time they are wheeling those little cars round and round the track having a blast!
Times up!!! Wheeeew. Now let’s check out the rest of the place. They have a lovely little sitting area with benches and a very nice and sturdy train for the kids to play in/​on. They love that just as much as the rest of the place. We stayed for a while chatted with the owners… who, by the way, could not be any more wonderful than they already are, and just enjoyed the remainder of our time there. They are in the process of also adding a «chugga chugga putt putt» that I simply can’t wait for!

A ride on ‘Sophie’ the train has become a weekend staple activity for us. The conductor who drives the train is a friendly gentleman who the kids love. They also are making investments in not only the track and station, but also working to expand the entire facility to include other rides.
The only negative thing for me is the fact that this well kept secret is not so secret anymore.

Follow the signs through Southwest Williamson County Regional Park to get to the parking area for the train. The ride lasts about 15 minutes. Even goes through a (man-​made) tunnel! Lots of fun for $ 2.50!

This was a great, inexpensive activity for my toddler and 7 month old. They both loved it.

We loved that they included a tunnel… we saw some deer… went by a lake… all in all a great time and the train is really cute!

Inexpensive joy ride for the kids. Highly recommended.

My little boy is a train brain. He can not get enough. Toy trains, real trains, mini trains, Thomas the train, they all hold his attention. So when I heard about this quarter scale model train in the Williamson County Regional Park, I knew this was going to be a family event.
The train runs Saturday and Sunday from 10am-​6pm and the tickets are $ 2.50 a piece. It’s about a 15 minute ride and runs a little over one mile through the park and by some of the sport fields.
The train ‘station’ is near one of the sport fields and you can find it by following the signs at the entrance of the massive park. It’s nicely shaded and has a few benches if you end up having to wait. The ‘conductor’ is a nice man that actually built the train and the tracks (check out the whole story on their website!) — he wears the striped coveralls and the hat, and even punches the tickets once everyone is ‘all aboard’! They even reserve train rides for birthday celebrations if you are inclined to do a group celebration on the train.
Good price, fun family day out. We will be back!
