Went there on a Saturday afternoon. A few people in the place. The lady behind the counter was helpful in telling us where the drinks were, seat yourself, etc… I got the Captains platter and my wife got Kevin’s platter. The crab cake on mine was all back fin. I don’t think they make them there. We both got the cream of crab. I’ve had better. It needed some sherry. The rockfish bites were the best thing on either plate. I had the mac and cheese side dish, not very good. The coleslaw was ok. All together we spent $ 70.00.

We went on a busy Friday night and we got lucky and got a table right away. It was super crowded but we lucked out and got right in. People came in right after us and it was a wait before I saw them get a table. Food: Great. I left stuffed and wishing I wasn’t, so I could eat more. I had The Captain’s Platter. Rockfish, Oysters and a crab cake. The 4 of us cleaned our plates and really enjoyed ourselves. Experience: The staff was very nice and made us feel welcome. My only issues is the ordering system. You seat yourself and then order at the counter. I saw a sign that was tucked in a corner that explained this, but only after sitting and waiting for about 10 min. It’s just a bit wonky… and doesn’t lend itself to quick service or additional orders of adult beverages… Overall: I’ll definitely be back.

My family and I love coming here! It’s pretty laid back, and it definitely has that family-owned feeling. It’s decorated with little oceanic knick-knacks on the walls, with bottles of wine filling the remaining empty shelves and space. Order at the counter, sit down with your number, and they bring the food to you. There’s also a self-serve soda/water/tea station for easy refills.
I highly recommend the Fried Combo, which is fried shrimp, fish, clam strips, and oysters, a huge crab cake, and two sides. Definitely get the sweet potato fries, and if they’re offering twice-baked potatoes… GETTHEM! Absolutely huge amount of seafood at a great price, and easily serves two people. The last time we were there, they had a stuffed rockfish special, which was a pretty decent-sized filet of rockfish stuffed with a generous amount of crab/mayo mixture. It was tasty, but definitely not as filling as the Fried Combo. Overall, it’s a cute little place to get a load of seafood at a very agreeable price.

I honestly wish I could remember my meal, but it’s been a while since I had an actual meal here. They have the best crab dip around, and the last few times I’ve been in town, I’ve got the dip a few times for a meal. It is thick, flavorful, and just great! I like the warm soft pita chips they give with it. Kevin is a joy, and always very kind and asks about me and the family whenever I go in. Great local place!

I’ll start of with a little bit of a disclaimer. I grew up near Baltimore and I love, love, love a good crab cake. What I mean by that is basically a bunch of lumps barely sticking together, preferably without a bun. So, bear that in mind. I came here literally because it smelled amazing from about 2 blocks away and I followed my nose. No joke, I’m pretty sure there’s a fat food monster that lives inside of my smallish frame and I’m a little ashamed I just admitted this to Unilocalers everywhere. Anyways. You walk up, and the place is super divey, which is a plus in my book most of the time. I head to the counter(pretty self explanatory for take out), take a look at the menu and decide on dinner. It comes out in a good amount of time(long enough to know they cooked it fresh, not so long that I got annoyed), and here’s what I thought: Food: I did take-away so it’s always going to be a little different. However, a fried crab cake(not sure why I didn’t get broiled but whatever) and crab soup are pretty much solid choices as «tester» meals at a seafood place. The crab cake had a bit more filler than I was looking for, and was a bit squishy as far as the internal texture went(I did try it fresh as soon as I sat in the car. I wouldn’t do the review justice otherwise). The flavor was great and I think the crab balls would be good here as an appetizer, but I probably wouldn’t get the crab cake again.(See my disclaimer). The crab soup also had a good flavor, but wasn’t as lumpy as I was hoping it would be, especially at the price tag. It could have used a splash of sherry to brighten it up and some chives or something on top just to help cut the richness. No, it doesn’t have to be fancy, and I get that this is a dive place. But those would really enhance the flavor of the crab. The one HUGELY disappointing thing is that they use pre-made sauces here(their cocktail sauce and their tartar sauce are Ken’s, I believe). When I go to a place with fresh seafood, I expect that they’re going to at least take the time to make their own sauce and not have me use something with high fructose corn syrup in it. Again, not a snobby thing, just a taste thing — put the effort in to top your fresh seafood with a fresh and unique sauce. Skip the fries; they’re nothing special. Oh, and they also do run an «all you can eat» special on some items on the menu, but I can never put away enough food(nor should I) to warrant it(but just as an FYI for Unilocalers who are interested). Ambiance: Typical dive restaurant. The tables were clean, though, and the restaurant was crowded(a good sign). The wine selection I think was Barefoot, so if you’re looking for some booze, stick with beer. They have the standard selection. Staff behind the bar/take-out counter was fabulous, extremely courteous, and very pleasant to talk to while I was waiting on my food. Again, decent wait time for take out, which was a happy find. Price: On par with seafood places around here. A little steep for what you get, but it’s a pretty captive audience when you don’t have a ton of spots nearby that are open year-round. I’d consider it mid-range. My meal was $ 19 and change for a crab cake sandwich, fries, and a(smallish) crab soup to go. Overall: I probably would come back here again and try something different. In the area, rockfish is almost a 100% guarantee to be good, so I’d likely get the rockfish bites or the dinner, or try their fried oysters. I have other seafood preferences in the area though, so likely I’d be back only if I was in the area already and had a hankering for something fried.

My wife and I have stopped here twice and we thoroughly enjoyed our food both times. Service is plain and simple– you order at the counter and get your own drinks, but they bring your food to your table when ready. The steamed shrimp was well seasoned and perfectly done(i.e. easily peeled). The cream of crab soup was thick, full of crab, and tasted great. I also got the catfish bites which were hand breaded. I think they would have been a bit better if there was some cayenne pepper in the breading, but they were good just the same. I didn’t see the rockfish bites on the board until I sat down :( I saw someone with a big plate of fried oysters which will be the next thing I try! The table next to us had some of the last soft-shell fried crab sandwiches of the season and I overheard them raving about them. The only thing I wasn’t crazy about were the fries– they are the batter seasoned kind and I prefer just plain fries. Both times we stopped during lunch and they were doing a brisk business.

Good food, cheap. All you can eat snowcrab legs $ 35. Also does large orders for up to 20 people and you can also offer by the pound. Local’s secret.

We had dinner here last Saturday night after one of the local residents recommended it. What a disaster. We arrived about 8:00pm, only one other table there. About 4 waitstaff greeted us at the counter where we ordered from their limited seafood menu. We asked for a bottle of red wine and all they had was cold Merlot. There were other unrefrigerated red wines displayed and I asked for one of those which pretty much shocked them. We asked to eat outside, they said fine, but after we bought our food and wine and were headed outside we were stopped by one of them and told we couldn’t eat out there with the wine. Incredible. A beautiful night and we ate inside this deserted place with the owner giving a very loud monologue to his staff. My fish was dull, coleslaw tasteless, and when I asked for lemon they had none and gave me a plastic bottle of lemon juice. Awful. Although they close at 9:00, they turned away two customers saying they were going to close early since it was slow! He told us not to worry we could stay til 9:00. Not a very relaxing dinner or atmosphere. When we asked for a recommendation for a dessert place, the owner suggest Fat Larry’s, an ice cream and smoothie joint. In summary, an awful experience. Bad food, terrible customer service. No wonder no one was in there. Other restaurants that night were very busy but not them.

I wanted to love this place. Quirky, small family run, rumored to be a local’s «secret spot». It was down at the end of a street/alley way and looked promisingly quirky on the outside, but when we entered we never felt very welcome. I don’t know if it’s because we arrived an hour and a half before closing(is that considered late?), that we brought a baby, or that I was the only ethnic person there. We received cool reception and listless at times brusque service. Kevin(or who I think was Kevin) made the rounds to the 3 – 4 other seated parties but skipped us. We weren’t a rowdy group, this was dinner with my husband, baby, and my in-laws. All of us quiet, polite, well-dressed. In addition to the oddly cold service, we were pretty disappointed in the food. We ordered bbq bacon wrapped prawns to share and they were good, but kind of glopped on with a lot of bottled tasting bbq sauce, would have been better with a light brushing of sauce. My husband and I shared the broiled platter with fish, prawns and crab legs. I don’t know if it was the seasoning, but nothing tasted fresh at all. The crab legs had a very distinct old freezer taste and texture. :(I asked for lemon slices to perk up the stale tasting seafood and they didn’t have fresh lemon, just a big bottle of packaged lemon juice. ick. The crab cakes are the kind that are more breadcrumbs and mayo than crab, also notable is that all 3 crab cakes at our table tasted different from each other. weird. And the fries are frozen from a bag and soggy. coleslaw was bland and served in a half full 4oz styrofoam cup. gah, I initially started to try to find a kind way to review this place but basically they sucked and we left feeling pretty bummed out that we spent over $ 100 there. I hate writing bad reviews for mom and pop shops, but honestly I would never recommend this place nor would I return. I feel that I must say something nice though, so I will add that they have«home baked» desserts that have a very rustic church bake sale kind of appeal.

If I am anywhere near Leonardtown and it’s lunchtime, I make a beeline for Kevin’s. Softshell crabs are great. Crab soup is excellent as well. Very, very fresh! Kevin and staff are very nice people and always make you feel welcome.

Whenever we are in Leonardtown we like to go to Kevins for dinner. We really like the food and have not been unhappy with the quality. Its a good seafood place. Its not Jerry’s in Prince Frederick but its worth stopping in. Its not fancy and nothing really stands out as totally over the top awesome, but nothing stands out as bad either. Just good solid seafood.

I am someone who enjoys quirky, busy seafood places, and Kevin’s fits that bill. The food is pretty straight forward and I tend to order fried oysters or the crab cake with a baked potato side. The place is usually packed, the boat bar is very cool, and I think Kevin has been there on deck every time we’ve gone, which seems to say he is invested in his business and customers. And I’ll add, I enjoy patronizing Kevin’s business — I don’t know him personally, but since going in and my family chatting with him, I’ve found him to be the kind of person whose business who want to succeed. The 3 star rating is for the die-hard foodies; probably 4 stars for people who want to eat some seafood, have some beers and enjoy the busy atmosphere of a mom and pop place.

This place had been on my radar ever since I found out that the sign said Kevin Thompson’s Kevin’s. The awkward signage not withstanding, and the odd feeling you get from a joint tucked away behind an auto dealership, the place is warm and inviting once you walk in the door. The counter where you order your food is a converted boat, which is a nice kitschy touch. There had been rumors that there was fantastic food being served here. They were only rumors. This place doesn’t seem like it gets a lot of clientele hidden in the middle of nowhere on the back streets of Leonardtown. As a result, having fresh product to cook with might be an issue. The hush puppies were good, because you really can’t mess that up. My crab cake, however, was mushy. Such a shame. I had really hoped for a hidden gem. The staff was friendly, the prices reasonable, but with lackluster food it didn’t really matter. I think if this place had more regular customers to help turn over the product faster the food quality would be better. It’s a bit of catch-22. For now they just have to bite the bullet, toss the old stuff and make sure they’re always putting out good fresh seafood.
