DeAvy

I don’t know if I would consider this a thrift shop. Although there were a few used shirts scattered around the store, it was mostly a gift boutique with a so-​so selection of jewelry, art, and a few antiques. There was a gallery space located in the back with an instillation of (dare I say) paper mache’ sculptures. This may be nice to check out during one of the Downtown Art Walks, but if your looking for a cool thrift go elsewhere.

I got hip to this neat little shop after shopping at my new favorite store, The Long Beach Depot for Creative Reuse. Lisa, the owner is very community minded and handed me several flyer’s about various other places around the city that I might be interested in going to. One of these flyers was the one for DeAvy.
Unfortunately, I did not have the time to go visit that day, but I did have a chance to visit last week.
What I like about DeAvy is that it is a small store located in the back of another store. Any one that has gone down to the Artwalk on the second Saturday of the month should be able to find it. It is next door to the art gallery and is located in the the back of the store. If you have been there before, you may recognize the former space of an art gallery.
The items are fairly neat and slightly kitchy. It has a comfortable vibe and everything in there, except for the art for sale, is very, very, very cheap. Lookout for what can double as a planter in there.
I believe DeAvy has only been open for about 4 weeks, so a lot of the reason that I will be going back is to observe their growth process to see what direction they decide to take the store in. Right now, it is a thrift style store with shirts that are about a buck, sweatshirts for about 3 and various art pieces that are about $ 100.
Keep an eye out for Elliot, who helps run the store. Elliot is a key member of Urban Paradise (a grassroots organization whose goal is to revitalize the park on top of the main library with native plants). He is also a member of Long Beach organics. I think that he will be a force to be reckoned with, don’t say I didn’t tell you so.
