Confirmed… closed. RIP Zip. Hope whoever comes next ups the back patio and maintains the stellar happy hour.

Is this restaurant open? The past few days of walking by around 5, the doors have been closed with everything stacked up inside. Too bad if so, they could have made a killing here. It’s only been okay the few times I’ve been.

We had a Living Social deal of an appetizer, two entrees, and two drinks. They didn’t have my first choice of entrée, the seafood pasta, because, as they told us, they would be closing in two days and didn’t get all the ingredients delivered anymore for the last couple of days. I was very happy with my second choice, though, the seafood salad. There was a generous amount of seafood, the dressing was light and had slightly tart tasted that complemented the ingredients. My husband was satisfied with his chirashi sushi as well. We ordered the yellowtail collar as an appetizer. It came after the main dishes, but we didn’t mind. The waiter knew it would take a while to prepare in the kitchen and chose to serve the faster main dishes first. The yellowtail collar was great to eat after the salad. So unfortunate that they will be closing. I think we would have come back. But at least we got one chance to taste their food.

I actually enjoyed my food here but there were a lot of issues. First, I ordered their Katsu curry but unfortunately, the waiter came back and told me that they were out of the pork and chicken and would only have the rice and curry so I changed my order. I ordered their hot stone bowl instead which was pretty good. My boyfriend ordered the chirashi which was really pretty. Second, we ate here because we found a groupon deal online which said they had Japanese food and steak but that was inaccurate because they didn’t have any steak. Lastly, the deal we found included an appetizer, two entrees, and two drinks but our first waiter said that the drinks could be swapped with two desserts instead so we opted for the desserts. When we finished our meal, a new waiter helped us but said we were only allowed one dessert. We didn’t give him any trouble because we were already full from our meal but I don’t like how they contradicted each other. All in all, I don’t know if I’d come back. Service was mediocre to poor and disappointed that they ran out of chicken and pork. You could give it a try though. Id recommend sitting outside in the back patio. That was my favorite part of the meal because it was so pretty and the weather was nice.

This place is terrible. Food is average at best and the service is atrocious. Took. over an hour for 2 rolls and cold udon. Waiter forgot one roll and when they brought it, it was given to the wrong people not in our party. Tables were never bussed and dishes piled up. Terrible experience. Save your money and go else where.

This spot«looked» pretty cool. They don’t offer the AYCE anymore. My fault… I should have called and checked. The rating is actually for the service. I took my wife for dinner on a Friday night. There were only 4 tables of customers. We sat outside on the patio which was basically empty. We ordered our food. Then shortly after, a large party was seated next to us. By the way, the owner was friends with this group. Because of this, service took a nose dive. The waitress forgot all the items we ordered. We had to keep asking where is this, where is that? The only saving grace is that one of the waitresses felt bad and gave us a free small sake. Overall… The ambiance was nice, but the food was just ok. We spent about $ 100 in happy hour, and we left hungry. I’m taking this spot off my Unilocal bookmarks.

Pretty good! Tried out this sushi spot recently and we really enjoyed it. We got rolls, edamame, cucumber salad, and vegetable tempura and loved all of it! I ordered the vegetable tempura as my main dish and couldn’t even finish it they gave me so much! Really good assortment of veggies too — asparagus, potato, broccoli, carrot, zucchini, onion. The staff was pretty attentive too, although we noticed there wasn’t an Asian chef behind the counter… Not a big deal because our food came out great! And, I believe that they must’ve renovated it in the last few years since I’ve been here last, which is a plus! Located close to an amazing ice cream shop down the street too if you’re craving a sweet treat after your meal!

Came here starving on a Friday night with the boyfriend expecting some quality dtla ayce sushi, but turns out they don’t do ayce anymore! Ah! I live on Unilocal reviews and the few recent reviews I read from less than a month ago still had ayce :(that was a bit disappointing. BUT we stayed and just ordered individual dishes. Ambiance of this place is great, definitely a hip little sushi joint with a modern artsy setup and dark lighting for that downtown LA vibe! The servers are nice and we got seated really quick. Accidentally got seated at a reserved table, got moved to the bar, but they offered us a table right when one opened up which was really sweet of them but we stayed at the bar. The sushi chefs were friendly and constantly checking on us at the bar. I got the sushi combo #2. My boyfriend got the seafood pasta and we got a baked Louisiana roll and a yakitori sampler. It was a lot of food. Sushi combo #2…(2.5/5…maybe 2⁄5): I don’t even know what to rate this it was… sadly quite disappointing. For $ 22 I got a spicy tuna roll, «chef’s choice sashimi» and 8 pieces of nigiri. The selections were the definition of basic… tuna, salmon, yellowtail, ebi(shrimp) and seared albacore. The sashimi was the same selection… if the quality was great, I would’ve been impressed but the quality was no better than ayce sushi elsewhere. It just didn’t seem worth. Ordering individual nigiri was super pricey too, $ 5 for tamago and $ 9 for sweet shrimp. If the quality was like that of the combo, I wouldn’t bother. Oh yeah, and there’s no wasabi in the nigiri which shocked me… usually there’s a little wasabi between the fish and rice. And they forgot to give me wasabi on the side too… T______T;;; Seafood pasta(5⁄5): my boyfriend got the pasta and it was such a huge portion! The sauce was a chunky tomato sauce and it was really flavorful. It came with a lot of seafood too(salmon, mussel, shrimp, and scallops). They definitely don’t skimp out on the seafood like most places do with pasta! Baked Louisiana roll(3.5÷5): it came with baked crawfish, bonito flakes, eel sauce and dynamite sauce(mushrooms/onions) over a California roll. The crawfish was pretty good! It really does taste like mini lobsters, and the eel sauce really did the baked roll justice. Overall it was okay! Not bad but not amazing. Yakitori sample(3⁄5): it came with 2 of everything including shrimp, beef, chicken, bacon wrapped peppers, and veggies. It was a nice sampler to try everything but it got cold super fast. and they were either overcooked where the meat was a bit dry or undercooked for yakitori and it didn’t taste grilled at all. The selection was good but the execution could be better. I never had yakitori come with sauce either! Came with teriyaki sauce on the side and a spicy mayo. Overall the service was good and the ambiance was nice but I’m not sure if I would come back. The quality of the food isn’t worth the price. BUT the customer next to me ordered a soba dish that looked amazinggggg. I might come back just to try that out.

I wouldn’t consider myself a sushi aficionado by any means, but this place has very nice sushi. Very good atmosphere, if you’re looking for the most authentic place, this may not be it. However, I ordered the shishito peppers as an appetizer(as it was recommended by others) and I couldn’t eat it, to spicy for me. I don’t think I’m a complete weakling when it comes to spice, but this was too much. I just let the rest of it sit on my plate preparing to pay for it, when the manager(?) Came over and asked if it was too spicy to which I sheepishly conceded. She laughed with me about it, and took it away and removed it from my bill. I did not expect this, nor did I think I deserved it, but it was taken off my bill. Overall, great experience, and would come back if I get the chance again.

Decent sushi bar with decent prices. They offer an all you can eat option at lunch which seems a little pricy. For the price, there are a number of better sushi places to go to in the area that serve higher quality fish. That being said, this place is still good and reasonable for lunch specials. As this restaurant is located in Little Tokyo, it’s not particularly easy to find parking, though this area is a lot less busy than the main little Tokyo area. There is a paid parking lot across the way, which usually has plenty of spots open. I may or may not be back.

This place was great! Came here instead of waiting in the long line to Worstkuchi and was not disappointed. Easily some of the best sushi I’ve had since I’ve arrived in California. Had some delicious Sake to start off along with some Shrimp tempura. Good portions of some delicious food, everything came out efficiently. Very pleasant experience if you don’t want to wait in line forever at that place down the road.

We came here for lunch yesterday. So our order took forever. 40 minutes. They kept saying it would be 2 minutes more translation 20 minutes more. I ordered The Lakers Roll. It was ok. Not great. I should mention that our waitress went mia. Never came by and asked if we needed anything else. The people that arrived after us already had their food. WTF? My friends food arrived 15 minutes after mine. The lady at the counter said she would give us a discount for the long wait. This brings me to the discount. We get a check that wasn’t even ours. After the right check was finally brought to us we got like 3 bucks off. Extremely poor service. I will not be returning.

So I don’t typically do AYCE sushi but my friend really wanted sushi, it was Friday during lent and my friend had a huge bike ride and run this morning. Last night was my first time at Zip along with 2 if my friends and my party of 3 waited a little more than 45 minutes for the sushi bar for the AYCE but let me tell you, the wait was totally worth it. We were sat at the far end of the sushi bar and our sushi chef was Ryan, he was awesome and very chatty and friendly. We started off with some pretty amazing appetizers like shrimp skewers, spicy tuna jalapeño, green mussels, bacon wrapped asparagus, but the chicken yakitori skewers were definitely on the top, then we ordered couple rounds of sushi which included tuna, salmon, albacore, mackerel which were all delicious, my friend really enjoyed the salmon and I really enjoyed the albacore and mackerel. The rolls we got were the tuna inside out, lakers roll, yellowtail onion, and Vegas Roll. My favorite was definitely the Lakers roll, huge chunks of salmon and mayo and it was torched and topped with tempura bits, and my friends really enjoyed the Vegas roll with 3 kinds of fish n the inside and cream cheese and deep fried. The food was pretty amazing but Ryan made the experience that much more enjoyable, he’s just an all around friendly, down to earth and well-informed guy and we were able to talk him from food to travel to beer to real estate, even the other chef Mike was chill I will definitely come back because of the great experience we had. The only downside is the parking situation is a little tough but I believe they do offer valet up front between them and Umami Burger.

NEVERAGAIN! Ah my 28th birthday. I landed here for lunch. I had been here many times before. They have some stuff that is nice on the palette but then again… uhhhh well… NEVERAGAIN! I found myself overhearing the«bro» behind the sushi bar having a chat about this and that(mainly just about drinking and the«chef life») to the«bro» sitting next to me at the sushi bar. I ordered 2 sushi roll dishes. While waiting for them I overhear the«bro» sushi chef say in his state of comfort talking to the«bro» customer«Yea we don’t serve high quality fish here because it’s an all-you-can-eat.» Oh good! So now I have some low quality fish coming my way for my birthday lunch! Maybe I’ll take in some mercury poisoning or radioactivity or something that isn’t yet in vogue! My first plate I receive and I start eating it. Then I realize this isn’t even what I ordered. «Da hell with it!» I say to myself. Then my next dish comes and I realize as this one is the right order… well gee I sure got a lot of crab! The first one was a roll made of primarily crab and then the second one was crab. I wasn’t really in the mood to argue all this crab with the chef. He was far too invested in bro dialogue. His tail was just all over the place for the bro customer. Also the second dish did have this really delicious, low-quality fried shrimp in it. «Da hell with it!» I said. Then I endured about 20 more minutes of listening to these bros talk about their love of alcohol in a very conditioned, stereotypical, unoriginal fashion. That was fun! Lucky me the rest of my day was great after I walked off all that low-quality crab. I had a good birthday-morning too so phooey on those bros! Ya know? Does a bro know that he is a bro? They are good at objectifying their girlfriends who take that treatment as normal behavior. Is there a word for them? Do they know that they are a bro? Is that how it works? It’s funny going into stores and being called«bro» by the service people who are actually the bros. «Can I help you, bro?» «Low-quality fish!» Straight from the mouth of the bro chef.

This was yet another place I went to for the Hello Kitty Hungry Hunt. I luckily did not have to wait very long when I came here, which was a relief after I had ran over from my parking spot two blocks away: P Zip Sushi Izakaya is a small restaurant in Little Tokyo/Arts District and the only parking options seem to be street parking or paid lots. They offered the option of either eating the Hello Kitty«sushi» in the restaurant or getting it to-go, which was really nice of them. I had just eaten before I came here, so I got mine to-go(but I made sure to take a picture of the one prepared for a lady who was staying ;)) The sushi that they prepared was a California Roll with shrimp tempura. I love those! You really can’t go wrong with these, so I enjoyed them. But I do have to say they are not great… but that could be because the staff felt rushed to make them for everyone in line? Not sure. I will say the two guys making the rolls were really nice. I really should not have taken so long to write this review because I promised one of them I would mention he was single in this review… but now I don’t remember his name :(Oh well, it was a long time ago and I’m sure he’s no longer single anyway: P The Hello Kitty roll came out very cute and overall I had a positive experience here. To be honest, I probably won’t be back just because there are other places in this area that I like more(I am not a fan of sushi in general), but I am glad that I got the chance to try them out. 3.5 stars but rounding down to 3.

I’m quite surprised that Zip Sushi is one of the few choices for AYCE sushi in the LA area(specifically Little Tokyo), at least on the Thursday night that I went, location-wise it was convenient so we gave it a try. Atmosphere wise, it’s cool. It’s hip, it’s the new thing, it’s in the arts district so I can dig it. 4STARSFORSUSHI 5STARSFORSERVICE + EXPERIENCE! So. I’ll round up in terms of stars, plus I told sushi masters Ryan and Mike I’d give them a shout-out and a 5 star review, because they really do deserve it! But word of advice, skip the rolls and go directly to the sashimi(seared salmon, regular salmon, crab, masago = all BOMB. Tuna = meh I’ll skip, wasn’t too fresh the day we went). But let me say the salmon was so good. Mmmmmmmm. But I can’t ever say no to salmon. Pretty fresh and deliciouso here. Appetizers? Yeah. load up on the 1) bacon wrapped asparagus and 2) those baked green mussels. Both were tasty and delicious! Seaweed salad was also surprisingly delightful and not your average. The rolls were aiteeeee. We tried the Dodgers roll which was a spicy tuna with ceviche on top(meh, both were good separately but it tried too hard doing a combo together). The BSCR roll was also aite. Like I said, skip the rolls and go to the sashimi. Service was awesome! Ryan was super nice and friendly so kudos to him. He was really on top of his sushi making game, and quick with it too. BESTPARTOFALL? COMPLIMENTARYGREENTEAICE-CREAMATTHEEND. Zip Sushi isn’t the best I’ve ever had, but it gets the job done and satisfies the craving. My tummy was full and happy. In total I believe AYCE is $ 29 per/person.

Friendly/good service, but unimpressive menu. The sushi was a bit overpriced and the only thing original or creative about the rolls were the names(Banksy, Picasso, Lakers…) the highlight of my dinner there was sitting next to David Arquette at the sushi bar!

Thumbs up for the artsy and chill atmosphere being located in the arts district of DTLA, but of course parking leaves you with street parking or valet. The valet around this area is $ 7 – 10, but this restaurant does validate valet parking for $ 3(but not sure which valet is theirs). I came here with a party of 13 for a coworker’s birthday lunch. The service was good and we got our food fairly quick. In addition, you get complimentary edamame and miso soup. I ordered the chirashi bowl($ 16), which had 3 slices of salmon, tuna, albacore, white tuna each, 2 pieces of tamago and shrimp tempura each. It was kind of difficult getting the remaining rice because the bowl was served in a pot-like plate/bowl, which was strange for a chirashi bowl. Also, their patio area looked very nice to sit except it was too hot to be outside.

The restaurant: Located in the heart of the arts district in DTLA, Zip Sushi is a cute restaurant with a beautiful patio in the back. The service: It was fantastic. Angie, the owner, is very sweet and truly wants everyone to have a great time. They gave us complementary edamame, shishito peppers as well as this delicious vegetable ceviche which was a bit spicy in all the right ways. The food: We orders 4 rolls of sushi which were all good. They have a large variety of sushi rolls to choose from, all with creative names. We ordered the Van Gogh roll, pollack roll, in and out tuna, arts district roll and more! Overall, I had a great experience at Zip Sushi. This is the type of place that you go to if you’re from the area.

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. I’ve walked by here many times while in the area at neighboring restaurants and bars, and had never thought about coming here. Since Little Tokyo is literally across the street, I guess I always got sushi in that area, and considered this area to be the place to get brews at Angel City, a slice of pie at Pie Hole and some sausages at Wurtskuche. We had actually planned to go to another place in DTLA for dinner that night, but because of the crazy parking situation as a result of a free concert that we were unaware of, we got diverted to Little Tokyo, and the line for Wurstkuche was too long and we wanted to eat somewhere quickly since we had a birthday party to go to, and we ended up here and boy am I glad we did. The food was good, portions were generous, prices were reasonable, and service was excellent! BF and I shared a bulgogi bowl, which was surrounded by an array of salads including my fave-seaweed salad on top of rice. Kind of reminded me of bibimbap, which is a little odd to have at a japanese restaurant, but I guess this is more of a fushion place. I believe this dish was around $ 14. We also got a bento bowl with chicken teri, spicy tuna, sashimi, and tempura also came with salad, miso soup, and rice. This order was around $ 15, and was huge. We could have been full just sharing the bento box. Our friends ordered a yakitori sampler, and it was also huge! Service was great! So many people came to check on us. They even gave us complimentary edamame, and told us to come back for happy hour out in the patio sometime. I didn’t even realize there was a patio, and it was really pretty out there. They even called a cab for us.

Loving the vibe but not feeling the food. My friend and I came to Little Tokyo to look for good food. Our choices were ramen, sushi, shabu shabu or yakitori. After checking out a few places on Unilocal,we decided to be adventurous and try a place we never been to before, hence, we chose this place. We immediately got into the awesome ambiance of the restaurant it felt great. They have the AYCE sushi only available at the bar. When we got there and seated, we realize that the choices for the sushi and rolls were very limited. After picking a few nigiri, we didn’t know what rolls to get because there was only the list of names with no description. We also picked a few items from the kitchen menu and had our first round. BARITEMS: Salmon and the Albacore were really good. White fish was a bit fishy for me which I did not like. Salmon Smelt and Scallop were fair. They didn’t have yellowtail. KITCHENITEMS: The shrimp tempura was crunchy and delicious. Edamame was good. Miso soup came out hot which is a big bonus. Seaweed salad was interesting as they put a few different kind of seaweed on a plate(not quite what i was expecting). Overall, I wasn’t very impressed with the food. The server and staff were awesome. They have friendly smile and attended us constantly with refills and clearing of the plates. If only there were more selection of fish and such, I think the AYCE price is a bit high. There are many other AYCE japanese restaurant that doesn’t have the ambiance but definitely outbeat them on their food selection.

This is a pretty nice place. Next door to Umami Burger. One street over from Wurstkuche. Parking is okay… there is street parking all over but it’s a really busy area. We were able to grab dinner here last minute and they seated us easily even though there were seven people in our group. It could have been because we got there really early around when they opened. When we were seated they gave us complimentary edamame. Also they gave us complimentary miso soup. I shared a deluxe sashimi combo which came out to 40 pcs of sashimi.(5 pieces of 8 different things). I was sharing this order with someone and I thought it was a pretty good deal for $ 50. The fish was pretty good. And they had one of my favorites in there which was a white tuna. They also had salmon, tuna, octopus, yellowtail, and I forget the rest. It’s chef’s choice. Some of my friends ordered a combo which came with the shrimp sushi. Our waiter asked if we wanted that or not because some people don’t like it and you’re able to substitute it for something else. That was pretty cool. Also they have pretty good happy hour… if you order a drink, you get a sushi item for only $ 1 more. The service here was pretty good. These guys were great. I would come back. It’s a cute place. Also it’s bigger than you think it is. There is a whole other back room too!

Hello Kitty Hungry Hunt stop #8 The Hello Kitty Hungry Hunt brought me here. I came here for the dinner pins handed out for the Hungry Hunt. 25 pins were passed out starting at 5pm. The particular day I went was super slow because when they started at 5pm, there was only about 10 people in line. The workers were very nice, including one guy who I can only assume is the owner. I liked that you could order your sushi to-go or to eat there. At Zip sushi, it was $ 15 for a shrimp tempura roll made to look like Hello Kitty and the Hungry Hunt pin. The shrimp tempura tasted good, but I don’t think it was worth the $ 15 it costs. It should have been about $ 7 or so and with the pin, it should not have been more than $ 10. However, this was for Hello Kitty and so there were people willing to pay whatever it costs. I might give this place a try again if I was in the area. I’ve read reviews on their all you can eat deal and that might actually be worth a try depending on what items are available. Service here was quick and friendly. What I did not like was it seemed like they gave out different information on the pins to people. On the day I went, they told me they only had enough to last a few more days… but later I met people who went more than a few days after and they still were able to get the pins and then there were others who said they were told they completely ran out of pins…

Came here on Halloween after Hello Kitty Con!!! We walked here and waited in line for almost an hour until they opened. We ordered the hello kitty hungry hunt roll.. .which basically was a California roll that had sushi look like hello kitty’s face. They only handed out 25 pins this day. Service here was AMAZING. I came here today for a lunch date with my mom just to catch up with her. We walked in and she was immediately greeted by the owner who asked us if we wanted anything to drink. Then, she introduced me as her daughter… okay, mom is clearly a regular here. AMBIANCE: The exterior walls are filled with abstract murals like neighboring restaurants in the district. It was a nice day out, so we sat in the back patio which was spacious, well shaded, and had a cool red décor. The owner informed me that it gets pretty packed when USC students fill up the place at night for sushi & sake. Wait, does this mean my mom is… hip? SERVICE: Slyvia, our server, was great! Our food was out in less than 10 minutes and we were well taken care of. With an hour lunch break, quick and friendly service is a must! Thanks girl! FOOD: Rainbow Roll, Zip Alba Cado, Shrimp Tempura. Perfect amount of food for two! The sushi was fresh and the presentation was nice. The Zip Alba Cado is fresh albacore completely wrapped with avocado slices. Avocado lovers, you know what to do. This is an excellent place for lunch. I’ll be sure to stop by with my much cooler, hip counterpart aka mom again soon.

I come here for the sushi and when I’m jonesin’ for a good deal with raw fish. The AYCE menu is limited yet impressive. There is also a range of 15 + appetizer, hot/cold non-sushi courses such as: seaweed salad, a handful of skewered choices(beef, shrimp, chicken), asparagus wrapped with bacon, soup, tempura all very nice small plates dishes. The fish selections are limited on the AYCE side but you can order outside of the AYCE menu for extra. I’ve visited Zip at least 5 times now and my verdict? Consistent, fresh, clean, no complaints AYCE sushi for $ 25(sans alcohol), a bargain. This price also comes with hot/appetizer items I mentioned above unlimited. There is an hour limit. The service is attentive. The rolls are extremely popular. I’m pretty focused on the sushi primarily small fish(i.e. smaller than tuna, yellowtail, albacore). OK, sometimes I have a couple of albacore toward the end of my choices. The tamago is a divine ending(sweet, custardy, firm) and end that with a seaweed salad and you feel like heaven. If you like saba the preparation here rocks, slightly tart very nice contrast to a salmon or scallop sushi. But let me not forget that this is an Izakaya, so beer and sake with these great, tasty and delicious dishes are the rule of the night. Always crowded, come early. Tip: The sushi chefs have a jar. :) Visits: 5+
