I like going here when I’ve missed the farmers market but I still want FM quality. This place is unique and a must-see. I haven’t been to their outdoor market, but the indoor section is great. they have mushrooms I’ve never heard of, fresh milk, eggs, beans, honey, flour, etc. I usually don’t see much fresh produce apart what is in the small cooling area, but it is great for non-produce groceries.

Best milk I have ever had! I was headed to downtown Kroger hoping that this winter they would have decent apple cider when I saw the Root Cellar was open. Normally I associate this place to the summertime market of fresh produce, however this time they had their small indoor area open. The shop has fresh meats, Kenny’s cheeses, and winter produce like turnips and cabbage. They know carry fresh baked bread and Apple Cider! I look forward to have a way better option then Downtown Kroger for my produce close to home. Plus my Makers 46 got the Hot Cider it deserved.

This incredibly small grocer is reminiscent of a farmers market. They don’t have much of a selection in terms of fresh produce but they do have a charming atmosphere being housed in what appears to be a an old service station. When I visited I really wanted to buy something but I didn’t really need anything and the prices in general were a bit too high to justify it. Things I noticed: The have an great selection of cheese in the fridge/freezer but be prepared to spend. They have goat. Where else will you see that? I believe they had duck but I know they have whole chickens. It’s highly walkable for folks that live in Old Louisville and I hope that I’ll have an opportunity to stop by and actually make a purchase from them sometime in the near future.

A gem. So happy to have this place just a mile down the road. Its like a farmers market for when you can’t make it to the farmers market — the hours are very convenient(except they’re closed on Mondays). Ron is always around, smiling and ready to help or chat. He has helped me when I was in a panic because I was in the middle of making ice cream and missing 3 eggs. He also puts out descriptions of littler-known produce and gives recipes describing how to use them. More pantry items are also showing up in the store, making this a truly useful spot, and a MUCH better option than the Kroger a few blocks away. I love this place!

The Root Cellar is a welcome addition to Old Louisville. In a neighborhood that is full of corner convenience stores and seriously lacking in fresh food choices, Root Cellar offers access to locally sourced food. I bought some delicious foods I didn’t even know existed, like purple bell peppers and orange tomatoes. They have plenty of frozen meat choices, free range eggs, and milk. They carry duck eggs and bison sausage, too! It makes me happy to know what I am eating is healthy, high quality, and supports local farmers. The prices are comparable to what you will pay at a farmer’s market, and is accessible year round. They are closed on Mondays. The building was transformed from an old garage, with doors that open for an open air shopping experience when the weather is good. The owner is always friendly and helpful if you need assistance. I highly recommend!
