Went here with my best friend while I was visiting her and her newborn daughter. Wait time was about 9 – 10 minutes, which I am told at the time we went should have been an hour or longer. It was a solid 3 I would say 3.5 but Unilocal will not allow. I ordered a steak quesadilla thing, I wanted something with guacamole, I swear it said that it did but that was missing. The meat was kinda of greasy, but was decent. Salsas are made on site super fresh, bean are cooked daily or to order. Chips tasted like they came out of a bag and friend ordered nachos and the chips were not the same which means they either make one and buy one pre made. I would give it a shot if you’re heading into Lubbock, TX.

The food here tends to be of high quality and the service is always good. One of the more disappointing things is that the tipping guide on the receipt is calculated on the gross amount rather than the net, as done by upper scale restaurants. I chalk this up to an inexperienced management team. Nonetheless, keep that in mind when factoring tip.

The wife and I wanted to try something new and were not disappointed. We both orderd a burrito I got it with with fajita beef. The beef was very tender, and very flavorful, also the guacamole was outstanding. Really the only downside was the wait for our table. I can’t wait to come back.

Came here to the courtyard on a night when they had live music. Fortuitously ran into the manager who told us what to order(the cheeseburger torta with green chiles is to die for). What a great experience! Great entertainment, great food, great service… and great weather(the restaurant obviously doesn’t control that). Can’t say enough about a well managed, established restaurant with reliability.

The food is pretty good, but I come here for the live music and the swirls :) And always elect to sit on the patio… the patio food menu is limited but very good. I recommend the brisket tacos :)

I have dined here with my family many times. We have also had several very large, very expensive, celebration dinners here. The previous experiences weren’t too terrible, I’d even call them good, but the service my mother received today was absolute garbage. She went in and was first ignored by two waitresses, managed to get seated, and after waiting an HOUR for the waitress to come back and take her order she decided to take her business elsewhere. The rest of our family will be doing the same. Ridiculous.

Love this place. The queso is awesome. Service is hit or miss depending upon the server. We’ve had awesome servers and grouchy servers. I also recommend the layered dip. The grilled chicken salad is amazing too. I watched the tortilla lady make tortillas while talking on her cell phone one time and that kind of grossed me out, but other than that, it’s a good place to eat. On the real picky side, I’m a queso snob. I really wish they’d change the dish their queso is served in. The bowl is very wide which leaves a lot of surface area. The queso always gets cold before we can finish it. And, I do not like leaving queso! :)

I had Sunday brunch here today. We got there at 11:00 to beat the rush and we were seated immediately. As usual, the waiter was attentive, the food came out quickly and was scorching hot. I can honestly say I’ve never had a bad meal at Abuelos. By the way, if you like prime rib, their Thursday night prime rib special is amazing!

Other than the ridiculously long wait, we had a good experience. Our server, even though she was busy, checked back often for refills. The large menu made it difficult to choose a main course so I ordered a combo plate called Matamoros(chile relleno, chicken enchilada, and beef enchilada). Delish! The chile relleño was the best I’ve had. Also tried a bite of beef fajitas-onions and peppers were cooked perfectly and steak was seasoned well. Guacamole was good, salsas did not impress me. Everything at Abuelo’s was fresh and flavorful. I eat Mexican food often in the Chicagoland area and compared to restaurants up here, it seemed like someone put a lot of thought into each dish.

Overall was pretty good. Server tried to be funny but instead came off as annoying and not a good listener– not something you want to do to a hangry couple who has yet to eat all day after traveling and it’s 2pm. Had 4 enchiladas, got one of them wrong but was too hungry to bother sending it back. Was still good and hot with quick service.

I have nothing bad to say about the food at Abuelo’s and I’ve been coming here for over fifteen years. Come early on the weekend if you aren’t one to wait because it gets pretty packed. There is music on the patio some nights which makes for a romantic, fun atmosphere. Definitely a Lubbock staple. I will caution you not to get too full on warm tortilla chips and the salsa trio and to save room for the papas.

Not real sure why there are 5 – 6 hostesses at the entrance looking like they all hate their jobs with pretty indifferent attitudes towards the customers but whatever. Our actual waitress was friendly, attentive and helpful. We started with the dip sampler which is always pretty good. I went with the Pescado Guerrero which is an all time favorite. I did like it better when it had the Mahi Mahi a long time ago but it’s still pretty dang good. Only complaint, potatoes are almost runny… not exactly what I was looking for. The cilantro lime rice was excellent. Kids had burritos they couldn’t pick up because they were soggy but they went to work with their forks and were just fine. Wife had the Mexican stack and said it was perfect so good job overall! We will come back as long as they’ll have us

Went for a late lunch today and it took over 40 minutes to get my food after it was ordered, they were not busy at all. The server was nice but it was still to long to wait for food to come out and not be that good. Don’t know if I will go back after today’s lunch.

Go early. Abuelo’s is always packed. Great food and drinks. Both usual Tex-Mex and steaks.

Good service, friendly staff, huevos rancheros on Sunday morning is a super value. Love going for the early brunch special before the the place fills up.

Good Tex-Mex food for a good price. I always get the Durango Burrito for my meal. The papas(potatoes) as a side are always really good. Abuelos is a solid place to eat, there’s just nothing incredibly special about it. Everything is good, just nothing mind-blowing. With that, I still always go back because it’s good and consistent.

I love Abuelo’s – usually. Today I wanted to try something different got the Tortilla Soup and Reynosa Salad. The soup was tasty and spicy but looked like it had been sloppily sent out and not as hot as it should be. I also wish it had been a larger portion and there was no soup spoon(this actually does help with such a small bowl – which I found out as I had to bring the bowl to my mouth, ha). The salad though… was the most unfortunate part. The ingredients were mish-mashed and seemed really heavy handed. It basically became a big mush after some bites and being that it was a cold salad it reminded me of the porridge they eat in the Matrix. But I digress, I think it could have been solved with some more robust lettuce leaves, less beans/sauce, and more meat and tortilla chips. I had about 20% of it and left it on the table. My experience was made brighter by our waitress(Madison) who was very attentive and kind. Overall, I still like Abuelo’s and will come back but for the fajitas instead.

Took away a star because of table confusion when we were first seated and our waiter was great but overall customer service here was satisfactory for me. I have been in Texas a few days so that bar of friendliness was set very high. Now for the food absolutely fantastic. The chips n salsa ehh, I could do without them. I had the Yucatan shrimp fajita style, it was very good. Rice and beans great authentic flavor. Guacamole on point. The blended cocktail drinks were good. And they have a machine at table to pay for your check if desired. Will return if back in town again.
