I’m a ‘casual’ user — i.e. I haven’t tested the lumber counter, in the back; though, I have purchased a couple of S4S boards on the main floor. Proximity is very good for us — 5 min vs 20 min to Home Depot. Service is probably very good — I see staff, readily available, who seem friendly but are not overly intrusive. This is good, as I enjoy wandering. Selection is broad, but sufficient. They probably carry pretty much anything I’d ever get from HD, of similar or better quality, but just less warehousing going on in the shelves on the floor. They even carry snow blowers … or they did … I haven’t checked since our 31″ snow fall this past weekend. Pricing seems a bit higher than HD, but only on most things. For me, the biggest hassle is the hours of operation. HD is open early and closes late, while Dries doesn’t accommodate my late-home-arrival after the long commute, very well. So, as of today, my ‘local’ HD has about 45 check-ins, while Dries has 6, [disclaimer: even with those numbers, I don’t always check-in at either location, but the proportion of visits is probably on track].

Short hours… I have gone here a few times in the past few years, with about ½ being turned away because of poor hours(most recently locking doors at 4:55pm on a Saturday). I am usually stuck going to big box stores as they are open later. Big box stores also have a better selection and better price, but my main concern is I need later hours.

Our local hardware store. Just two miles(about four minutes) down the road, I’ve popped in here more times than I’d like to recall for that one little thing we forgot(or didn’t realize we needed) mid-project. Very, very friendly & helpful staff. Surprisingly well stocked in comparison to their relatively small footprint. Pricing is hit or miss. Some things are ridiculously cheap compared to the big box stores(lumber; fasteners), and other things make me cry for my wallet. But I’m willing to pay extra to avoid the 15 minute trip each way to the big box — plus I like to support our local businesses.
