Loads of fun I had during the 4th of July weekend experiencing the rodeo. 2nd time I’ve made it to the rodeo and it’s worth hitting up. You feel like a local with open arms out waiting for you to come in. Bring your boots cause you’ll be parking in the cow pasture so in you’ve got flip flops on you may have brown feet at the end of the night should u step in something. OMG the kids riding the sheep were absolutely my favorite event. Kids under 10 get strapped onto the back of sheep and let out of the gates. Now this sheep Is flying and most kids find themselves falling off the sheep and burning into the dirt head first like a human torpedo. Quite amusing and no one gets hurt(I hope)… Next are the bull riders who are absolutely the craziest sum bitches around. The IQ points you have for riding a bull must be a zero because that’s one insane idea. But hey it’s entertaining and that’s what FRANK wants. These are some of the islands best rodeo riders so the competition is fierce. The concessions are filled with all local grub so it’s plate lunch city. Sample the steak & onions with rice or Kailua Pork or maybe just a hotdog. You won’t go wrong. Make a weekend of it and get the local feeling of the real Maui inhabitants, catch the rodeo you won’t be disappointed.

It’s amazing that this throwback to a prior life still exists. And amazing it hasn’t had a Unilocal review yet. Go if at all possible. 2014 was the 59th annual Makawao Rodeo over the Fourth of July weekend. Horse families from all over the islands, as well as local cowboys, compete in a real live action rodeo — from calf roping and bull riding to barrel racing and parades. Hundreds of horses, hundreds of competitors. From serious cowboys taking serious physical risks to little kids trying to ride sheep, with plenty of dirt and dust. Wow! It’ll either bring back great memories of the 50’s and 60’s, or give you a taste of rural life you won’t find elsewhere. Vendors too, selling boots and buckles, but more importantly local foods. Pony rides and a few kids distractions. Easy parking in open fields. This is not some world class arena event with tens of thousands of spectators. It’s a local rodeo on hard seat bleachers with hundreds of cheering spectators. Fabulous!
