Metro Custom Dyeing

I am a very large woman, and I knew that the bridesmaid dress color that my sister wanted would be absolutely insane to try and find. I bought a white dress and the bride told me about metro custom dying. Not only was everything finished quickly, but it was gorgeous! You couldn’t even tell that the dress was white at one point.

Took a little longer than I was told, but TOTALLY worth the wait. My knit sweater – a weird blend of acrylic, polyester, wool, cotton, and probably other fabrics – looks better now than it did when I first bought it. I wanted it dyed to cover some stains, and even though the straight black didn’t take, they turned it into a gorgeous grey/​black mélange, even going above and beyond to dye the little flowers different colors. It did shrink a little, which I was told it might, so be aware of that. Plus, the people who work there are very nice and attentive to you.

I had such a great experience with Metro Custom Dying. I wanted to get more use out of my vintage white lace wedding dress so I took it to be dyed a peachy-​coral color. Cindy was a pleasure to work with, very upfront about any risks involved, what to expect from the process, and promised to get the dress done in a very tight turnaround. The dress was actually finished a full week early and it was a perfect match for the color I chose! They take a lot of pride in their work and were excited about how great the dress looked in peach too. I will certainly return and have already recommended them to friends!

I really had a good experience with Metro. I was a little unsure because of mixed reviews, but some of them were from a long time ago, so I figured I’d give them a shot.
When I dropped off my dress, the guy let me know all of their concerns for the job (since we weren’t sure if there was polyester or not). They said initially I could cut a piece of the extra fabric underneath but they would have to charge $ 50…which is half the cost of the service… I was thinking ummm not sure about that for an inch of fabric. Then the dye guy interrupted and said no no, give it to me I will do it right now! (smart guy). They got the results and I proceeded with the process.
They let me know when it was ready (was within the 7 – 10 day window), it was nicely folded in a big thick ziplock bag and I am a happy customer. I would recommend them :)

I had to wear a coral dress as a bridesmaid and couldn’t find one I liked. Found a white silk dress with a slip that I brought to Metro Dyeing to have them dye it coral. Cindy was great and walked me through the process. She said, unfortunately both the under slip AND the detail on the top layer were polyester. Polyester does not take dye the same way. She said it either wouldn’t dye at all or it would only take a tint of the color. She and I talked about it at length and decided that it could be really cool to have a coral dress with white detail. I took the risk and am glad I did. The dress came out exactly as Cindy predicted and looked beautiful. I don’t think I will do this regularly, but if you’re willing to take a bit of a risk and spend $ 100, it can be worth it.

I got my wedding dress dyed black, and I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Before they proceeded with dyeing it, they let me know that the lining may not dye because it was a different material than the lace overlay. I told them to go ahead, and the result looks awesome! They also emailed me to let me know they were shipping it back, which I appreciated. Some of the lace shrunk in the process, so I’ll get the lining hemmed to match.
All in all, I was very happy to spent $ 100 to get essentially a new $ 1K+ dress. Very excited to wear it!

I needed to have a shirt dyed for a wedding to match a David’s Bridal swatch. I sent a white J. Crew button up cotton shirt that was older and had a few small stains. I got back a shirt that was almost the exact color of the swatch, stains covered. It was perfect. The stitching on the shirt stayed white because it was nylon, but the company warned that would happen. They were very communicative throughout the process as well.

I’m totally happy with my sweaters. It looks like brand new! I’m very satisfied with the customer care, their quick response, and fast service. I’ll be a return customer :)

I found this company through Google. I shipped my dress from St Louis, Mo to New York via USPS. I had a dress dyed from
White to purple for a wedding. Cindy R who worked there stayed in constant contact with me. She let me know they couldn’t dye my dress the dark plum color I sent on the swatch because it would have ruined the lace but it was purple and she thought I would like it. However, I didn’t get a picture. She let me know when it was shipped and when it got it, I was pleasantly surprised. It was still a very pretty color purple. The zipper turned pink, but you couldn’t really see it. I didn’t get after pics, but I will post what I have. I did shrink a bit from dying (but it was in the warning) and they were able to do it in less than two weeks, shipping and all!

I’m honestly very surprised by the other reviews on here — my experience with metro dying was great!
I contacted them about getting my wedding dress dyed blush pink for my big day, and initially they turned me down because of concern the dress would be damaged (tulle could be ripped, beading may fall off, may end up two different colors because of different fabrics). With a little convincing, they decided they would be willing to do it. On Nov. 3, I sent my dress to them with a swatch of the color I wanted — told them «no rush» because I won’t be getting married til April. On Dec 1^st, they contacted me to tell me it was done and on its way back; I got it two days later. They packaged it in a large box, and in my original garment bag. The tulle of my dress is very wrinkly, but I would expect it to be as such — I asked them to dye it, not clean, steam, and preserve it.
Results: my dress came back EXACTLY the color I asked for, beading still completely intact! There was one small spot (smaller than a dime) on the back that turned out more yellow than the rest of the dye (which they told me about), but that was it as far as color concerns. I was told they dip-​dyed it instead of using a machine as they normally would — happy that they made every effort to take the best care of it. As far as tears, when I sent it in I knew it already had a small tear in the front tulle. When I got it back, I noticed a few more small tears on the back. BUT, those could very well have been there before, and it’s not even a big deal to me because I’m getting the dress altered anyway.
I was SUPER impressed with their courteous, prompt customer service throughout the whole process. Cindy was extremely fast to answer all of my questions and was very pleasant to talk to. Their prices were great too! It came out to ¹⁄₃ of the price another company I was looking at would have charged.
Excellent service that has enabled me to wear my dream dress on my wedding day. I’m very grateful!

I am incredibly unhappy with the state my garment was returned to me in.
I brought my wedding dress to them in a garment bag and on a nice hanger, and it was returned to me essentially wadded up and tied in a plastic bag – completely unwearable. I suppose the dye job was okay, but it is incredibly difficult to tell in its current state. An $ 800 3.1 Philip Lim dress treated like something from Forever XXI. It’s absolutely disgraceful.
The only positive thing I guess I can say is that I asked for the dress to be dyed black, and it looks black. Period.
For $ 85, I would expect the garment to be returned to me in a wearable condition. Now, I have to go and pay another $ 25 for the dress to be professionally dry cleaned. Fingers crossed it comes back from the dry cleaner looking like something resembling my original, beautiful designer dress.
I have nothing to compare Metro Custom Dyeing to as this is the first time I have had something professionally dyed, but I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere to have your valuable designer pieces dyed or altered.

I am so happy with the work that Metro Custom Dyeing did. I had a pale pink dress that I needed to be red for a wedding and they were able to execute the dyeing flawlessly. I had great customer service and the dress which they suspected would shrink a full size didn’t shrink that much at all. I have recommended them to SO many people now and if ever the occasion to dye a dress again this is the first place I am going. (I swear i wasn’t paid to write this!!)

Pay attention to the other bad reviews, this place just doesn’t get it …
I brought in a pink t-​shirt I wanted to have dyed gray. They explained that because it was a cotton/​polyester blend they would be unable to predict the results. I was fine with this and asked them to have dyeing done, assuming they were a reasonable business and would provide some sort of compensation if the shirt was completely unwearable. They went ahead and charged me $ 85.00 before any work was done and told me they’d contact me when the shirt was ready. After about 3 weeks without hearing from them (I guess they must have temporarily forgot how to use the phone or email), I called and asked about my shirt. They said it was ready and I could come pick it up. The shirt was dark red and the graphic on the front was gone, since they warned me about this before-​hand, I had absolutely no problem with the result. All I asked for was some sort of compensation since the shirt at this point was clearly garbage. They offered me a discount on future dyeing which was obviously of no use to me since I don’t have stuff dyed regularly. I said, I completely understand that they warned me about the unpredictable results and that there is a cost of labor involved, but I since the shirt was completely unwearable that a 10−15% compensation would be fair, especially when charging $ 85.00 to dye a t-​shirt. They said they couldn’t do that, I asked if I could speak to the manager and I was told he wasn’t there, but would call me after 4pm when he got in. I waited until 5pm and called and this mystery manager still wasn’t available and the girl on the phone started arguing with me. I told her I’d just like to speak to the manager and she said he’d call me the next day, it’s been about a month and I’m still waiting for my call from the «manager».
All I was asking from this place was basic courtesy: notify the customer when the product is ready, minimal compensation for a clearly unusable product and basic communication with the manager to discuss compensation. They failed on all accounts.

i’ve now used them twice to dye all my articles of clothing black. i can’t be anymore happier with this fantastic service!
update. unfortunately they raised their prices. to a point where its not worth it to send my stuff in. suck. from 5 stars to 2 stars. i give 2 because you did a great job on my previous clothing

I had a terrible experience with this company. Mailed in my garment with a good-​sized sample and a check. It took them 7 weeks to get it back to me, and then only with multiple calls. And the result was terrible — it did not match the sample I had included by a couple of shades at least. Very disappointed.

I’ve used them twice now — sent my clothes in by mail. The first use was a thrifted shirt I wanted dyed from a pretty hideous green to a much more wearable blue. The second time, I sent in a light grey linen-​cotton mix sweater with a removable knit belt, and asked to have it dyed black. I got a phone call informing me that because of the mixed fabric, the dye might not take the same way uniformly, and the sweater may come out a dark charcoal. I said that was OK. My sweater came back two weeks later, and they did a terrific job. It is, in fact, very close to black, the belt came out well, there was almost no shrinkage, and now I have a much more useful garment. As long as you pay attention to the disclaimers about what they can and can’t do, your clothes will be fine — really cool service that they offer even to individual customers, and I’d use them again with no hesitation.

I had a terrific experience with Metro Custom Dyeing! I mailed in my wedding dress and a paint swatch, and without knowing for certain what fabric (s) it was made out of, they sent back a darling cocktail dress in exactly the right shade of green. Grace Ann (I think I got her name right!) was always business-​like on the phone, but made sure that I understood the risks that were involved, and scheduled the project so that they could really concentrate on getting it done well. Thank you, Metro!!!

short review: def recommend calling them and asking what they can do for you — which is probably a lot
long review (for people who cherish and have attachment to their clothes): I recently ruined a very beautiful mint green marchesa 100% silk dress with delicate crystal beaded neckline by attempting to hand wash it with detergent that ended up fading the color –making the dress look dingy. With not much of an option I did some research on redyeing the dress and other places I spoke claimed they could bleach out the dress and redye it to the original which seemed extreme considering silk is a natural durable, but delicate fiber.
I ended up calling metro dyeing and spoke to Yolanda and asked her what metro dyeing could do and her answer was the most logical:
1. they would absolutely NOT bleach the dress (this destroys the integrity of the silk)
2. since the fading was not uniform they suggested dyeing the dress to black bc this was the least amount of agitation and therefore would likely have less shrinkage, be sensitive to the beading and yield the best results
3. she also estimated 2 weeks for the dress to be finished bc there is not way to know for sure how the dress will take up the dye and therefore how long it would take (so patience is necessary, but there is an option to express it)
result: i got my dress back within 2.5 weeks — which totally worked for me. the dress is now wearable again and i would definitely use them again for other dye jobs.

Dynamic Dyeing! I had an excellent experience having a black suit dyed at Metro Dyeing. The suit, which I love (93% cotton, 7% spandex shell with a polyester & spandex lining) was fading from many dry cleanings and dyeing it myself was not an option. I contacted the official NY Fashion Center to obtain a list of companies in the fashion district that dye individual garments and chose Metro over a few others. The service, price and quality were very good and I would use Metro again. I was warned that the lining may shrink after the dyeing process (it did not shrink at all) and was advised to have the suite dry cleaned before wearing it. I am sorry to hear Shannon C’s story (below), which sounds terrible. I was fortunate to have a good experience with my suit.

Please be warned about this business! I am in Miami and found them on line. I wanted to get my white wedding slip dyed blue and they claimed to have great results with all types of fabrics. I mailed the slip in November to them stressing that I would need it by January for my wedding and waited a couple of weeks and heard nothing. So I called them and the women on the phone was very rude and told me that it was being done that day (Thursday) and if it dried they would send it out the next day (Friday). Well, nothing for another week and a half!
When I finally get the package the color is totally off. I had sent a 3″ x 3″ color swatch for them to match off of and they actually put it back in the package with the item! The two colors were not even close!
So I called and spoke to John… who seemed to be the owner. He wanted to put me on with the person who dyed it… not sure why. But could not get him on the phone so he requested that I send the item back (did not offer an apology or to pay for the shipping) and he told me that they would turn it around in one day and send back the next day. They received the item on Tuesday, on the following Monday I call to see what happened and he proceeded to tell me that the item was ready and that I needed to give him a shipping number to pay for the overnight shipping! He refused to acknowledge their error and refused to ship my item and would only send it to me ground (which now will not be here in time for the wedding) or I could pay for the upgraded shipping! He felt that they had done nothing wrong and he claimed that it is not his problem! So now, I have to go purchase another slip 4 days before my wedding and it will not be the color I wanted because I do not trust that it would be the color I requested even if I did pay for the extra shipping.
PLEASE do not use this vendor!
